Default Birth control and smoking

Actually, I have a couple questions.

I just started on the pill, and I smoke. I hear that's bad for you, but just HOW bad? I go through maybe a third of a pack a day.

And, don't some people go on the pill to reduce cramps? Because for the past three days there have been times when I've been almost paralyzed due to cramps, but this is also the first period I've had since October because of that whole morning after pill incident. I've also been extremely irritable, more than normal.

Besides locking myself in my room with a heating pad and lots of chocolate, any advice as to how to deal with this crap?

Consult a doctor!

The pill reduces chances of certain types of cancer, and increases others. As far as I can tell, it's only not recommended you smoke, because it might double the chances of cancer in conjunction with the pill? Or something!

*weeps* It hurts dude.

I'd love to consult a doctor, but the combination of the distance between my house and the doctor, the frustration it takes to even call the damn office, price of gas, and lack of insurance make that difficult. I guess I'll just hope I don't die or something. Maybe when I'm not so god damn irritated I'll just call the office, if I can even get through to the doctor.

^If you aren't willing to make a Doctor's trip, it doesn't sound like you are in that much pain.

Jill you really should try to go back to a doctor. They can change you onto a different pill and see how that goes.

People go one the pill in order to regulate flow, it has nothing to do with alleviating cramps. In which case, for the first couple of months you may feel cramps even when you don't have your period due to the fact that it's your expected period time. The design of the pill is to control your hormones, so being irritable might be a side effect along with things like pimples etc. Smoking while on the pill also "increases the risk of having a first-time heart attack by 30 times you smoke 25 cigarettes or more a day and take a daily, low-dose birth control pill". Just make sure you're not taking antibiotics while on the pill if your using it as a birth control method, antibiotics seem to cancel out the effects for some reason.

Usually cramps are caused by menstruation, and being on the pill doesn't allow true menstruation to take place. This is why it usually stops the pain, at least partially.

Could be wrong, but perhaps the pill isn't working somehow or there are other problems. Definitely check it out. It may be that you just need to let your body settle down to the hormones.

Wrong. The pill is used for relieving pain, and regulating periods. I know a number of friends that had extremely painful and irregular periods and so they all got on the pill and it helped much more. One just decided to stop, and its pretty much better now, only slight pain.

Sounds like you are on too high of a dosage. But then, you just went on it. Sometimes it can take a while to get used to new drugs.

My doctor told me that it doesn't usually cause much of a problem before the age of 30, generally.

Regarding smoking and using "The Pill"...

Basically

Being on an oral contraceptive increases the risk of blood clots in the limbs and brain. Smoking also increases this risk. Thus, you have a double risk. The end.

I always use a condom, but a couple months ago one broke. Just taking precautions.

did you know what PMS is a socially-constructed thing

in places like japan, china, and places that aren't the west(europe,USA etc..) there is no such thing as Midol, and the irritability, and even a part of the cramping does not exist, there is a hormone change but nowhere in the culture is there any evidence of PMS

so suck it up cuz it doesn't exist

Hey, Gus. I don't think she really cares anymore.

And, I really don't give a shit if anyone knows I changed my nick. I changed it for other reasons, other than the reason YOU think.
