Default I'm bummed out...

some background: my school completely lacks girlfriend material. it's acceptable for hookups, but hell, there is just nobody that fits any of my criteria for a girlfriend, which I would like at the moment.

so yesterday, my best friend hooked up with a girl I didn't really know, and a bit later the girl and I got to talk. turns out she is actually really nice, intelligent and fun, and even wants to study Sociology like I do. and she's very pretty on top of that. in summary; finally a girl that's really compatible with me.

but the obvious problem is that she hooked up with my best friend. and just for the record, he is really my best friend.

tomorrow's a huge party where both of them will be. I actually had plans to go for another girl, but I can't really stop thinking about the one my friend hooked up with.

also, it should be noted that my friend is not looking for a relationship. I haven't talked to him about that girl specifically, but my guess is that they won't be together for long. but you never know.

now, what do you think I should do? talk to my friend about it? go for the originally planned girl instead (she is also great, just not as great. forget about the girl? don't forget about her but wait until my friend is "done with her" (all the while causing me pain, though)?

meh. well, I'll appreciate your opinions. thanks.

hmmm...my first instinct is talk to your friend. but then i'm thinking, high school, him knowing you're into her will make him more into her. people are funny like that. maybe ASK him what his intentions are with her, without hinting that you like her, and see what he says. very casually. if he's like, nah whatever she was just a hookup, then be like, "oh, so she doesn't mean anything to you?" he'll say no, then you'll say "cool." if anything happens between you and the girl and he claims jealousy/anger, you have his prior statement that he wasn't into her.

if he DOES say he's into her and wants to go after her, then say "ah damn, i liked her too, oh well," and see what he says.

ultimately, though, he's your best friend. if he's really into her don't ruin things by getting involved. just play it so that you find out his interest level without simultaneously sparking it to go up.

about the other girl: take her as planned. don't presume something will happen with this other girl.

Firstly: The way you put it about there being no girls for you in your school. Heck, how big is your school? I think the lesson here is that once you get talking to people, they can actually all be different.. stop making assumptions!

I'm not trying to be rude, but it seems like you need to throw away your preconceptions and mingle.

About the other girl, give it time if you really want. And then try when they're not together.

thanks for your replies. lauren, that's definitely a good strategy to go about it, and it will definitely give me some clarity.

and Flock, sure, you're right. but my school really isn't that big, and I actually know most people well enough to basically understand their personalities.

wow, I can't believe how incredebly high-schoolish this thread sounds. I'm a senior btw, and mostly don't have these kinds of worries, but it almost feels nostalgic to indulge in the good ol' emotional upheaval again.

Yeah, what lauren said is a good plan of action.

Even if your school is small though, there are probably more chances than you think to find a girl you like. It's not easy though.

Just wait for them to end if they will.

The "prior statement" won't help - he could just say he got more into her later.
