Default Another person I knew committed suicide

In the past 2-3 years in my town of about 11,000 residents (I don't know demographics like how many older people live here) a number of people I knew have killed themselves.

I can't remember now but I think the first one was in about mid 2004 and he was an old friend - He played soccer (football) with my brother and the scary thing was that he looked just like my brother.

The next was a younger guy, he would have been maybe 16? when he killed himself just around the corner from me.

My memory is a bit hazey at this point but the next one that comes to mind is a guy that used to come over to our house and play original nintendo, he used to go to me and my brothers school and play tennis with us...he jumped in front of a train

Next was a guy I didn't know as well as the others but I knew of him, that happened last year.

And now my little buddy just now kills himself. He was only 18.

I dunno what I'm doing, I have a mixed set of emotions. I'm shocked, upset, confused - I dunno, having had to accept these time and time again is it going to make me bitter one day or something.

The oldest person from above would have been 23-24. I think how I mentioned 5 people, and how a loaded car could take away 5 lives too, but these people chose to die, they happened all with gaps between occurances...shouldn't there have been a suicide prevention strategy in place targeting this group? gahh

I lived in suicide district, New Zealand one time. I was only there for half a year, but two high school age people killed themselves. The whole area probably had a population of 10'000.

I was suicidal towards the end of my stay there too, though thankfully common sense prevailed and I'm still here today. Though you mention being suicidal yourself trouser...it's no bloody coincidence if you ask me. Get out now.

Wouldn't it blow to find out that you have the power to make entire communities suicidal? I'd move to the Bible Belt!

suicide tends to have a contagion effect. this has been studied and shown to be the case. if another suicide happens shortly afterwards, you'll know why. it's actually best not to talk about suicide. talking about it has been shown to promote suicidal tendencies within a population.

edit. the last part sounded harsh. you can talk about suicide, but it's better to focus on the grief aspect rather than "he took 40 pills and hung himself." -- that type of stuff can kind of incite people to greater feelings of suicidality.

edit2. it seems you're doing the above already, so nvm.

how old are you? are you tied to that place? do you have family there or some kind of great job you don't want to give up? if not, then I would really recommend to leave. there are better places out there for you.

Trousersnake I hope this opens your eyes a little bit (refering to our past conversations). It's really sad when these things happen because the friends and family of the person often blame themselves and wonder what they could have done to change things for their loved one.

Suicide is such a selfish act, not a brave one. I hate people that think it's such a dearing thing to do - and I can't believe some people think that it's their only option.

I think talking about it is good, so I disagree with you there Lauren. People need to be aware that these things are happening in the community, that their is help for people who have suicidal thoughts and that it is ok to seek help, or to talk to someone close about their problems.

It's sad that certain teenage cultures (emo) like to glorify things like pain, hurt, selfharm and suicide. It brings them and other people down.

it wasn't an opinion. it's been shown through research that talking about suicide increases suicidal behavior within a community. i respect your opinion though. i'd want to talk about it too. there are just certain effects of talking about it to be aware of.

Then they weren't talking about it right, Lauren.

But I'm also sure that they really didn't do much more than to talk... I know that I've had really bad times in my life when everything seemed like it was against me, the chips were so far down that I couldn't even touch them with my toes, and I just wanted it all to end, right then and there.

Thankfully, though, I have a wonderful voice in my head that doesn't want to die, so I try and listen to her. She's usually damn well good at getting me out of trouble.

But though, there really should be better programs that aren't designed to prevent suicide (that's like trying to clean up the spilt milk instead of trying to stop the spilling container) but are, instead, designed to help people NEVER get to the point where they think it's their only option.

And yes, it is an option in the mind of a person that's had so much go wrong... Hell, I was just on my trip east, but I was going north... And my car rolled. I was stuck in the literal middle of nowhere with a broken car (which needs a new engine), in the bloody cold, with almost no money on me, and very little credit. The costs started piling up, but I was just happy I was able to keep myself alive and healthy through a car crash.

It's really about being able to see that while things might look bad right now, they aren't nearly as bad as they could be, and they'll get better just as long as you MAKE them better.

This is what we need to be teaching the people of today... That there isn't something else out there that MAKES your luck, your fate, your life... That things aren't destined to happen just because of your faith. That things happen as a RESULT of other things, and that the only way to change things is to TRY AND CHANGE THEM.

I really hope you can find a new place to live, TrouseSnake, because I'd suggest you move to a new town if you could. Bad memories always seem to build up and up the longer you stay in any one place.

And best wishes, man. Stay strong, please. *Hugs*

Shit happens. There's nothing you could have done to stop them. If people have the determination to actually go through with it, then they're not going to be talked out of it.

I'm concerned for you at this point, the sadness of losing so many people combined with that stupid thought that perhaps it was something to do with you..

I reckon moving out and moving on would be a good plan.

Comfort yourself with the fact that those people were unhappy enough to want to die, so they should be alot happier now. Wherever/whatever they are.
