Re: buying a ring?
um.. make sure she knows its not an engagement ring, and really, silver/gold depends on her..
I would say pay attention to anything she usually wears- silver or gold? its just a preference thing in my head.
if my guy got me a ring, the only thing that would freak me out was if it was a diamond.. thats the stone that equals panic in my mind. Silver or gold has no bearing.

Re: buying a ring?
..Take her with you?
It really depends on the type of girl she is.. she'll either fall in love with a beautifull zirconia that costs £20, or, she'll set her heart on a £6000 diamond. Both of which look identical, but no, she will have that diamond.
Also, yeah. Be carefull she doesent assume this is a 'marry me' or 'lets get engaged' type ring. Be REALLY fucking carefull of that or you'll have one pissed off/heart broken/very scared girl on your hands.

Re: buying a ring?
Okay, how much are you looking to spend?
Any certain type of stone you're looking to put in it?
Rings, like yoyo said, go from 50's to the 100k's. Now I know you're not spending 100k on a ring, but what are your limits?
If you're cheap, get a silver band with a small Cubic zirconia or a smaller real diamond.
If you want to spoil your woman, get a white gold or Platinum band and a 1/3-1/2 carat diamond. Trust me, you'll spend a pretty penny on that. Somewhere in the 800-2000 dollar range.
Looking below 1000?
In the 300 range you can get a white gold band with a 1/8th TCW for somewhere in that range.
Those are really some of your best choices.

Re: buying a ring?
I'll be sure to let her know its not a marriage thing. We still have to get outta high school anyway...
As for the spending, My limit is pretty much $100. But I live in the V.I. (a port that makes a shitload every year off of alcohol, and jewelry) So jewelry is ALOT cheaper here.
as for the ring... she usually wears gold, but gold in my mind means marrige. lol. I think I might get her birthstone...
Thanks guys.
