Default So my husband thinks I'm an alcoholic pill popper

And the funny thing is I DON'T EVEN DRINK THAT MUCH! But he's been talking a lot about how I take too many pills and how I shouldn't ever buy booze because I drink too much. Everytime we are at the store he'll nag and nag if I try to buy wine or beer and if I try to buy vodka or gin he like FREAKS out.

Now he's started saying that I take too many pain killers and tranquillizers and that I should look to meditation and yoga instead of drugs...It's crazy! Now I feel like I have to sneak around because he'll be judging me.

So anyway, I'm not sure what I'm looking for here...I guess does anyone have any idea how to show him that there is no problem?

How often do you drink?

What types of pills? Prescribed or otherwise? How regularly?

well, did you consider his point of view? do that first. and really, don't overdo it on the meds and the alcohol.

if you really don't have a problem, then talk about it with him. he'll understand.

Unfortunately the more you protest that there isn't a problem, the more you just convince him that there is.

Only thing i can suggest is you don't touch any alcohol for a few months AT ALL. Just so he sees you aren't out of control.

The painkillers are a bit more difficult. Go see your doc. Tell him the sitation and get him to prescribe you stronger painkillers that work but that therefore you'll have to take a lot less often (thus letting hubby think you are taking less. No I don't mean lie to him).

People who care about you always assume the worst when it comes to negative things like that.

My mother worried about my alcohol intake, when I am actually really moderate compared with other people.

I don't know what to do about it really.. just talk it over!

I don't drink that much anymore...I've started drinking a lot less because of his constant bitching about it. I would say that I drink no more than 2 or 3 times per week and I NEVER get drunk. I'll have maybe 2 or 3 drinks and then stop.

And yes a doctor prescribed my pills. I take valium and percocet. The percocet sucks but I get these terrible headaches and I have to take it for that.

Not to rip on your man or anything, but officers are always so touchy-feely about the most retarded subjects.. I guess they put that into the at the Academy/OCS.

I guess you could cool it to one drink or so every few days. The pills are prescribed though, he's out of order.

Haha, you're a typical housewife now.

Stop drinking though. Booze + valium = no good. Actually, booze and percocet is no good either. And I stand by my opinion that you should get a job. Do you drink because you're bored? Lots of housewives pop pills and drink because they're bored...

You should find out why he's so against you drinking. Maybe he wants to have children with you and is afraid that you'll fuck up your body and that'll damage your future children's health or something.

I can see myself worrying over that.

I drank half a bottle of Everclear and took some Percos once.

All it did was keep me from feeling drunk, I was totally sober. Pissed me off, I wanted to be rolling my ass off like everyone else.

Maybe they were the time-release kind, if they make them that way. I don't have much personal experience with drugs.

No I drink because I like the taste and it makes me feel more mellow.

And believe it or not, a GOOD housewife has a lot to do to keep her busy. I also have a lot of hobbies like crocheting, knitting and making lotion and soap. I don't have a job because I enjoy taking care of my house and family. Being a housewife isn't a lesser occupation than having a job outside of the home.

You can always ask BLTC about it. I'd help you out but opiates aren't my thing, I'm into halucinagens and uppers.

Anyway, Xiao, as said, you are a light drinker and the pills are perscribed. So from what you've told us your husband is the one with a problem.

Yeah, liver failure is a buzz kill.

OP: Instead of percocet, see if you could get prescribed OxyContin 20's. It won't really be that much stronger(it's the same drug, just more of it), and since it's in continuous release form, you won't have to take it often.

Drinking alcohol with it might defeat the time release, though.

But still, something you might want to bring up with your doctor.

I can't say I blame him too much... he's an AF officer, correct? If he's been in service for any amount of time, he's been around the block and he's seen what drugs do to people.

EDIT: Not judging you, of course. If the doctor prescribed them, then there are no problems, really.

My mom is prescribed two different types of hydrocodone and also ambien, and she is constantly fucked up on them, to deal with her problems. Just because you get your drugs from a guy with a degree doesn't mean there can't be problems.

Ambien is fucking AWESOME.

I was prescribed that once by base medical because it takes me like 2 hours to go to sleep. I went on a boat DET, and while we were out to sea I took 10mg to get some extra sleep.

Next thing I know, I'm four minutes into a man overboard drill, with someone shaking me to get up, and I have to run to my shop in long underwear, stoned as hell, bouncing off walls. I walked in and almost fell over. They asked me what was wrong, and I was like "Ambien's fuckin me up man!"

Anyone who's been on a ship knows about knee-knockers and non-skid, and how hard that makes it to run through hallways. *dies thinking about the pain of tripping and falling*

And you're not a social drinker if you don't drink, you know, socially. As in: with other people; different people. Having a group of alcoholics does not make a group of social drinkers. And 2 to 3 drinks may seem like you aren't drinking much, but when coupled with benzodiazipenes, specifically in your case diazepam (valium), intensifies the effects of the alcohol significantly. And, like has already been mentioned, it increases the likelihood of you not remembering large chunks of the night.

So:

You could be an embarrasing drunken ass 2 to 3 times out of a 7 day week (a third to almost half of the time) without even knowing it.

You may say you don't drink that much because you don't feel that you fit into the stereotypical boozer. You may present yourself well, you don't destroy the house, you don't beat your children, you don't inflict injury on your husband, you don't disappear for weeks at a time coming back with no money and a lengthy police report, etc. This doesn't mean that you couldn't be a much better you if you simply cut back on the drinking.

Having valium prescribed to you tells me that you have an anxiety disorder, most likely Generalized Anxiety Disorder(GAD), which would mean that allow unidentifiable worries to cloud your judgement, impede your well-being or self-esteem, and may allow you to make rash decisions and close yourself off socially. These are not things that you want to combine with a cycle of drinking, nor are they something you'd want to ignore by drinking and thrust upon your husband (presumably somebody you love and care about) when the underlying issues become insurmountable because they haven't been dealt with and the alcohol reverses the effects of the diazepam, thus intensifying the GAD symptoms.

Mental health is no joke, neither is substance abuse. At least hear your husband out, I assume that you didn't marry him for being a selfish douche; he probably cares about you.

Some people may have different definitions of social. Either way, she's not an alcoholic until she's drinking every day, and getting DRUNK.

If you're prescribed it, and take it daily, you'll build up a tolerance, so it won't have that much of an effect. Same goes with the oxycodone.

I mean, has she SAID that she's blacked out? No. She said she doesn't even get drunk.

Of course she says she doesn't even get drunk, I would have said the same damn thing. I'm not speaking from a scholastic stand-point here; I speak from experience. I doubt comments would even be made, especially constant "nagging", if there weren't a noticeable difference in demeanor.

Building up a tolerance would play a role here, especially since they're prescribed so presumably taken daily, the chemical composition remains the same however. Diazepam is a GABA agonist, which means it gives your brain more GABA to play with; alcohol does the same thing, so there's even more GABA running around through the neuro-structure presenting all sorts of possibilities for the personality.

Alcoholism is not determined in duration nor intensity, it is a product of one's attitude towards the substance, and how significant of a role it plays in the persons life. Simply not purchasing provisions for the household (it's not like she wouldn't be able to obtain sufficient means of booze at a bar or something) wouldn't be a problem for somebody who wasn't at least somewhat attached to the bottle.

It'd be a non-issue.

Perhaps you should be.

You obviously don't get out much. There are plenty of people that think doing something as benign as smoking cannabis turns you into a drug addict.

quote:Building up a tolerance would play a role here, especially since they're prescribed so presumably taken daily, the chemical composition remains the same however.

Yes, but it has less of an effect.

quote:Diazepam is a GABA agonist, which means it gives your brain more GABA to play with; alcohol does the same thing, so there's even more GABA running around through the neuro-structure presenting all sorts of possibilities for the personality.

I know all this.

If drinking alcohol starts to negatively effect your life, and yet you keep doing it, THEN you're an alcoholic.

Precisely my point, just in different words.

As for the rest:

I meant to say that I'm not solely speaking from a scholastic stand-point, and that I had gone through some severe substance abuse problems in the past. Which is why I haven't been taking certain aspects into acount (people equating a joint to booting black-tar heroin, people being different, etc.) for the sake of brevity because a lot of her justification and logic sounds similar to what I was doing.

Loved one expresses concern for drinking so buy a bottle so I don't have to go out.

What?

Saying things like it's been a week since I drank, as though a week is such a lengthy peroid of time between episodes of emotional abuse.

Sneaking around to avoid "horrible judgment" as though making a parent/child dichotomy of my love life was going to make anything better.

We could go on and on and on about speculations about whether or not she's telling us the truth, whether or not her husband is a crazy super-sober nazi, what really contributes more heavily to substance cocktails, etc. but, instead, I've looked at the way her thinking wraps around this dilema, and coupling that with bits and pieces of similarities in logic.

Neither of us really knows, it just seems that I'm more convinced that she may have to take more responsibility in this dispute with her husband than you do.

Call it transference of guilt on my part, who knows? I just think we can't rule it out that she's talking to a bunch of assholes and open drug users in hopes that their opinion will justify her actions to herself.

By a strange coincidence, I went to the doctor yesterday and I was prescribed ambien for my insomnia. I took it last night and that is one CRAZY drug! It made me all confused and I had mild hallucinations...It was sort of like taking weak LSD, except it also made me very sleepy, where acid always made me feel wired.

In short, I'm not going to take it anymore, because it's too intense for me.
