What do you say when you call someone on the phone, and their parents or another family member answers?

What is the most polite way to ask for them, without sounding like a loser?

If you think it may be your friend/gf/bf or w/e , do you ask if its them, or do you just ask your normal way?

I ask this here because I will be calling my new girlfriends house later today, and she has decently strict, but also socially polite parents.

Yeah, that, except say 'may' instead of 'can.' It's politer.

And if you're not sure if it's them, ask if you can speak with them anyway.

When they say "Thats me" you say "oh I didn't realize"

Is it really that hard?

People always mistake me for my mother and vice versa on the phone.. I'm never offended! I just have to tell em the truth before they divulge random information.
