How can any son of mine..? (parenting topic)
Like most parents I learned pretty damn quick that each of my sons is an individual with his own tastes and opinions.
I mean , for fucks sake, one of my kids spends all his money on fucking Will Smith videos and Michael friggin Jackson Cd's!
But how on Earth can any son of mine decide that he wants to join the British Crown Forces??!
Some of you know that I am staunchly republican and have actively supported 'the Cause' since I was a teen.
All my Kids know the words to 'Rifles of the IRA' by heart.
And yet the other night youngest son informs me he has applied to be a cook in the army.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not scared of anything happening to him, especially not just as a cook ....not unless he has the misfortune to serve with Americans. (How can a country that has such a gun culture not teach its soldiers to shoot straight??!).
I'm just disappointed that he obviously never understood the issues or that I somehow didn't explain it well enough to him.
Anyways in a vain attempt to make this a useful thread:
What beliefs/opinions do you hold that disappoint your parents?

I get shit grades at school but i never go out, so they can't blame it on drugs or never being home.
So now they say I need to come out of my room for several hours each day.

What's that supposed to mean? I shoot pretty well, and I bet most soldiers do too.
I think it's more the silly regulations that we have to abide by over in the sandbox that makes life tough. Or crappy equipment that grunts can't help but be issued.
I'm not sure if I disappoint my father at all, really. Most of the things I do, I do so I don't end up disappointing him.
My choice in joining the Navy wasn't stellar, nor is getting kicked out, but he's more glad to have me back than anything else.

Most of the guys I know shoot pretty well, with blackpowder and also with CO2 in as real battle as we get.
Analysis: USArmy need moar paintballing.
Me? Hm... I've converted to agnosticism when they're all bugging me to go to church on Sunday mornings.
My mum's constantly overemotional and optimistic and she pisses me off as a person; Whilst my dad's pretty logical but he likes to believe that his God will make everything right if he can't do it himself.
So on a personal level, I don't like my parents, and it irks me further that they've actually been kissing up to me to change that.
Other than that, I'm making good decisions. No drugs, good grades, great girlfriend but no secks (at age fifteen, third base with my one girl is an okay place to be), and intelligent friends.
Unfortunately, I hate injustice in school, so I get into fights defending the bullied kids fairly often, and I get eaten out for that.
Yeh, thet's pretty much it. D:

Re: How can any son of mine..? (parenting topic)
Maybe the struggles of the IRA haven't been as prominent in his lifetime compared to yours, and he just sees you as being old fashioned in a way.
Honestly, I'm not very up-to-date with the IRA and I really couldn't care less about Ireland/England in general. I hate the Irish and their dirty drinking day of St Patty's.
Other than that, I suppose you just have to understand his political beliefs will not always be in line with yours. My father is a Democrat and raised me with his beliefs, however I still don't follow them. I am not Republican, but I am certainly not Democrat, either. (.. and really is there any real difference between them?) As you've already stated, he's in no real danger being a cook. Not sure how it is in jolly ol' angly, but in the USA, most people respect military vets regardless of what they did. That will help him later in life.

Like the cheap replacement M92 magazines they've issued which jam in, uh, sandy conditions?
Perfect for Iraq, I reckon. Also, the magazines that work are illegal to use. Oh ho ho ho! Merry christmas when your last line of defence, that being your crappy pistol, jams on you.

I use it in place of explaining where we are, in saying that I'm a virgin-by-choice. It's a simplification. =/
If you'd prefer:
Well, we're at the stage where we're careful about pregnancy. I have no problem in sticking my fingers inside of her to have her reach orgasm at least once or twice a sitting, more if we're spending the night or home alone. And she has no problem with giving me handjobs. There's a lot of trust in our relationship, and there's no real need for true sex until we actually get to the babymaking. So no need for the risks it involves.

Re: How can any son of mine..? (parenting topic)
hehe.
let the boy have his phase...i bet you had an overly romantization of the millitary period too.
and if he joins up...it'll be ok...
ask him why he wants to join? does he want to travel? does he want a piece? is he rebelling against his families politics? is the boy depressed and looking to die in the heat of a sandbox?
if he wants to travel, ans you have the *rubs fingers together* which i know you do...send him off to belarus. let him tour the eatern bloc, go back to krautland.
if he wants to play with firesticks, send him to central california in amerika for his higher education, he can transfer to uc merced and play with my gun..er...firearms on weekends. send him with condoms too.
if he's found his political niche there is not a durn single thing you can do that doesn't involve the rod to fix it. imagine your old geez trying to curb your youthful political ideology.
if the boy is sad about buisness, and searching for a gloriful way out...buy prozac.
or just let him go off to the army to fight ze rebels.

Re: How can any son of mine..? (parenting topic)
My dad and I have very similar opinions/beliefs on everything. My mom is a "people pleaser" and her beliefs are based on Salvia Browne books and she doesn't discriminate (although she's crazy as hell). My mom's SIDE of the family though.. are huge into the God thing. Christians. I'm actually going to visit my uncle soon, who is a pastor at some church. They'd HATE to find out the truth about me.
What's kind of funny, is that I never felt a need to tell my parents that I'm bisexual. So if it ever is found out, I don't know how they'd react. Heh.

And no, it's not too soon.
I'm not really sure if my parents are disapointed at me for anything. I can't think of anything I've done that has made them feel disapointed (and I've done some stupid fuckin' shit over the years).

Re: How can any son of mine..? (parenting topic)
Hasn't the army's prescence in the North been greatly diminished? Isn't that partly due to all the jobs that have opened up in the last decade?
I hear that some number of Irish types are go to Ireland from the New World to work there?
Much as I dislike the Iraq debacle?
Isn't it moral (or at least quasi-moral) to, "Render unto Caeser those things that are Caesers".
Have you asked him why the Army & not 2 years at Cooking School to become a proper chef? Of course, the Army takes him away from home & might be less hassel than school?

This was indeed a major plus point in my eyes! Also he'll get paid. But he is also signing up for catering college incase the army thing doesn't work.

Ad with many other areas of the world? Any serious downturn in the economy could cause layed-off folks with too much time on their hands to get cranky?
Guys who would get political...except they're too busy working overtime so they can buy the new Playstation or such? That is then & now they are working.
No saying the Army there is any better at giving you what you ask for than the US is there? People within England's Fabled Shores? Does the Army promise them stuff (like cooking) then give them Artillery or Tank Repair instead?

You're a genius. Grade A+.
Anyway, I have very tolerant parents who have never felt the need to force their views upon me, which is alright, I guess. Having said that, my grandmother almost wrote me out of her will when she found out I didn't vote for the Labour Party in the 2001 general election. I tried to explain that Tony Blair is closer to Margaret Thatcher than anyone else in politics, but to no avail. I then tried to explain that I voted Lib Dem to stop the Tories getting a seat in my constituency, but she doesn't understand tactical voting.
In summary, I'd be terrified of my grandparents finding out things about me that I wouldn't be at all concerned about my parents finding out about me. I don't know why that is. For instance, my parents are quite alright with the fact that I smoke weed occasionally, as they did when they were younger. If my grandparents ever found out, I would SHIT myself. Weird, huh?
I think it's important that kids don't grow up in order to please their parents, but all kids should know that their parents can give damn good advice. I didn't want to go to university, for instance, despite having As in all my A levels, but my mother persuaded me and I'm glad she did.
Grand parents are scarier though. If you're a republican, I'm assuming your parents are. Get granddad on the phone to bawl him out

I was expelled from school, I run with a rough crowd, a friend and I sell. Come home drunk and high alot. OD'd on xanax...in school. Good grades, but get into trouble alot. Sexually active. My parents think people have to make their own decisions in life. I've made some bad ones, and its given me the determination to fight my way out and better my life.
My attitudes toward my life changes frequently, I fight with depression and anger. Im attempting to quit smoking while simultaniously coping with being dumped and having to start working again. Ill end up pushing myself to a highschool diploma and then the Army, I guess.
