my friend
one of my close friends sent me an instant message a few minutes ago. he came out to me (what are the odds) and he likes me. like more than a friend. i was just considering how rarely a coincidence like this occurs. but, how will we be possible in a republian conservative community?

Re: my friend
Here's the thing. If you and your friend are gay, that's your business. First don't expect approval. Just because I'm not going to stop you from being gay doesn't mean I'm going to embrace your lifestyle choice as a good idea or one I would reccomend to anybody. If you can understand and respect that and don't go around accusing people of bigotry simply because they won't relent and tell you they're ok with your lifestyle, you should be fine. Second, gays seem to have a habit of going out of their way to make sure that everyone around them knows they're gay. That annoys conservatives, and, I suspect, many other political stripes if they weren't too politically correct to admit it. If you're introducing your partner to someone, you don't have to hide your relationship, but neither do you have to make it perfectly clear to everybody in a 50 foot radius with a demonstration kiss or something like that.
Another issue is public displays of affection. I don't really give a shit if you want to hold hands or smooch every once in a while in public. Just don't go into a makeout session in a movie theatre or a restaurant or the busstop. You've got to understand, that annoys most people no matter what the gender or sexual preference of the people doing it. I don't need to see you busting slop while I'm riding the train home, et cetera. Last, liking buttsex has no dress code. You don't have to dress up in hotpants and glowstick necklaces just because you're now out of the closet. There is a standard of atire that people can wear in public and then there's clothing that nobody, and it doesn't matter who or what they're boning when they go home at night, NOBODY should be wearing in public.
That's about it, except to reiterate perhaps that you shouldn't expect instant approval or approval at all from some people and you shouldn't let that bother you or respond by accusing people of bigotry. Ideally, a moral conservative should have the forethought to realise that sin and sinner are two separate things, that everybody has a vice, and that yours is simply sexual in nature. However, many people find it hard to make that leap as sexual immorality seems viscerally worse to many people than are some of the immoral behaviours that they themselves might engage in and it provokes a stronger reaction from them. This is an unfortunate fact of Freudian psychology.
Hopefully, you will not encounter too many people who are wholly unable to separate sin from sinner in their dealings with you, but if you do, the key is not to lash out at their beliefs, but respectfully criticise the way they're representing them. If they want to make an ass of themselves from there by rebuking the unreceptive, that's their affair. In conclusion, conservatives typically believe that all romance should be a discrete and private thing; this even goes for the irreligious ones who might very well be ambivalent about your lifestyle. If you handle yours in that way, you should have no troubles with them.

Re: my friend
Why is this in politics? Is Quebec going to hold a referendum on whether your friend should be gay or not?

Having given it some thought, I think you're right. I'm sending this to Sex and Affection. The social interactions surrounding someone's sexlife, even expressed in political terms like "Christian Republicans," aren't really the domain of this forum.
