Good idea?
I am currently in the market for an engagement ring for my girlfriend. I'm planning on giving it to her one Christmas. I've been looking around, and it is unrealistic for me to believe I will be able to get a diamond anything like I would want. I was looking into getting her a ring instead, with our birthstones. Hers is a blue topaz, and mine is emerald. I was thinking that would be a little more special, and I also found after looking into it that it will be tremendously cheaper. Is this a good idea, or should I just go with a small diamond?

Re: Good idea?
I dont understand the concept of rings in the institution of marriage. It's like, you're supposed to get her this really killer ring when you propose, and then...you get her another really killer wing for the wedding?

Re: Good idea?
I'm only doing it because it is a symbol, and that is why I'm thinking our birthstones might be better. Not just a diamond like most others.

Re: Good idea?
you know, engagement rings don't necessarily have to be big rocks. i would way rather have something unique and special even if it was small. they're usually more interesting and beautiful anyway. if you want to do the birthstones thing, you're going to have to have a nice design. it doesn't have to be big...maybe a small diamond in the middle and the birthstones one on either side? depends onn if you think she'd like something like that. it's not super traditional but maybe she'd like untraditional!
i have a ring with three bitsy diamonds and a mix of white and yellow gold with a sort of curvy design. i've gotten a lot of compliments on it because it's simple but unique.

Re: Good idea?
No, wedding rings are traditionally a gold band.
The killer ring is for the engagement.
Birthstones are a wonderful idea. Though diamonds are traditional.
It all depends on what kind of girl she is really.
And remember, you don't need to buy a huge rock to impress her. Tasteful and cheaper is always better than gaudy and ridiculously expensive.

Re: Good idea?
No need to be extravagant in the expense department - as long as the ring is of reasonable quality it need not contain a diamond to adequately express your feelings and represent your committment.

Re: Good idea?
definitly go with the birthstones. they usually come set with small diamonds all around and are priced for a few hundred dollars. and you can get a wedding ring alter on that complimetns it with a bigger diamond if you want to
