Nearly there - new contraceptive
Male contraception for the near-future?
Interesting article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6186962.stm
The only things I don't like the sound of is the animal testing, and this shitty quote:
"For women, it would be another form of liberation." But crap statements aside, it's interesting, and if it worked, it would be groundbreaking.
However, it doesn't sound like it'd every be too reliable.
What do you chumps and chumpettes think?

Re: Nearly there - new contraceptive
I would -absolutely- LOVE a male contraceptive. But 5 years from now, hell...I'm hoping I'll be ready to settle down and start a family, so I wont have much need for it.
And also, the women bitching about how tiring it is for women to always have to be the ones worrying about it needs to be shot.

Re: Nearly there - new contraceptive
Taking care of contraception is well worth it, and therefor not a chore, but it'd be great to have other backup methods. Although if it got so easy, the condom (ie the male responsibility) would probably become less used and STDs might be spread by careless people.. I don't know though, I just get the impression that would happen.

Re: Nearly there - new contraceptive
You might as well wear a condom... if they have one for females then isnt that enough? why do males need 'the pill' as well. Some moany bitch has been nagging about equal rights saying men need to take a pill to stop us shotting us a load... kill joys.

Re: Nearly there - new contraceptive
Cant the egg-heads find a cure for cancer or comman cold (kills old people) instead of fucking about with reproduction which already has several "cures"

"It gets really tiring for women always to be the one in charge of fertility"
That just got to me.
I dont see why this is anything special, they have the shot and the implant for men already and theres a condom.
Plus, you still have to wear a condom incase of sexual diseases so using the shot/implant/pill/condom im pretty sure people dont wannab e going out of their way for ANOTHER one.

The common cold is a virus. We cannot currently cure viruses because they mutate. They can be, at best, suppressed. Old people die anyway, so this doesn't benefit us as a species.
Secondly, cancer can be cured if stem cells could be researched widely. Studying controlled mutations will allow scientists to understand why cells mutate, and then cancers can be prevented or completely removed and new cells put in place. That's the basic mechanics of it, but it's obviously far more complex than that. Understanding the human genome and the mechanics of cells will allow for new forms of medicine to be tailored to the individual. This is a number of years in the future, but it will probably happen in our lifetimes.
The "egg heads" work for private corporations that respond to public demand. The pharamceutical industry makes billions upon billions of dollars every year. A male pill would sell well because a lot of men hate wearing condoms, so this way they could at least not fear pregnancy.
I, for one, would use the male pill. I mean why not? Extra layer of protection in case a condom breaks. Or if I'm in a monogamous relationship then 2 forms of birth control - without a condom - would be fucking awesome.

Re: Nearly there - new contraceptive
Some of the explainations are stupid, but from what I gather on S&A, many people would be happy with other backup methods.
Besides, there are things like allergies to certain materials, and some people can't take hormones.. so I dunno.
Weighing up the situation, it seems welcome enough. I feel more confident taking care of my own contraception than letting someone else deal with it.

Re: Nearly there - new contraceptive
I'm in. I don't need any little mini-me's running around for several years at the least. And imagine what the odds are of having kids if both of you are on "the pill"....Literally ZERO. And if one of you misses a pill, no harm done I'd think.

You wouldn't be. Most of your ejaculate isn't sperm, just fluids from your Prostate/Bulbourethral glands.

yeah, but there's a certain sexyness that lies in the ability to knock up females, that you are very powerful, and are a potent lifegiving force that is removed psychologically with this sort of thing.

That's why as a man, you wear a condom, to protect yourself.

Haha, perfect example of why feminists are idiots. If you're going to carry a kid, you're damn right it's your responsibility. You wear a helmet when you get on a motorcycle, right?

A little mean, but considering it was a rediculous statement anyway, I'm going to give it a 9.5/10.

Re: Nearly there - new contraceptive

Re: Nearly there - new contraceptive
when it comes to preventing pregnancy, i'd want to be in charge of it. if a guy forgets to take a pill, I'M the one that might get pregnant, not him. i would only use this in conjunction with my own contraceptive pill.

Yeah, it might not catch on, but people said that about the Euro, and DVDs.. at least where I came from.
As soon as I read about it, it did bring to mind all the "tricked by hos" stories with the "It's ok honey, I'm on the pill!" lines.

Mainly because I don't like condoms, though.

Stop being a fucking tard. That's obvious! Really though, it's still something we should talk about and learn more about.

Talk, yes. Doctors often don't know/speak about unwanted effects of medications. Let the users/guinea pigs speak up.

The female contraceptive pill causes breast cancer. What side effects will this drug cause?

It increases chances of breast cancer, but reduces chances of uterine and cervical cancer, I think. Which is why not everyone can go on the female hormone pill. Especially smokers - though none of my smoking friends seem to take that into account.
