Do opposites attract?
I have been trying to figure this out for the longest time. Does it work both ways? When you are opposites, you have so much to learn from each other and a lot to talk about, but there is also much much more to argue and fight about which can split you apart.
Although, when you are equals, you can relate to each other quite well and once again there is a lot to talk about and you can relate to each other better. On the other hand, when you are equals, it becomes quite easy to become bored with one another because it is almost like your dating yourself after a while.

Re: Do opposites attract?
Well...if you stay with someone long enough a part of them "rubs off" on you. So, if you're opposites, I would say you will become more alike.
If you're already alike, it will be smoother sailing.
As far as "boring" goes, being opposites does not eliminate the potential to become bored either. I've dated opposites, and even the arguments became "boring" after awhile.
[I am, however, confused by how you're using the word "equals". ]

Well, what I mean by "equals" is....not opposite. I can't really think of anything else to describe it. But obviously, there are people who are complete opposites of one another, and then there are those who already have a lot in common, making them more equal to each other.

Ah...that kind of equal. I have a different way of thinking about equality, is all.

Re: Do opposites attract?
Interesting thread there.
I would say opposites can definitely attract. Take a look at couples you know - especially older ones. Your parents for example... Your uncles/aunties. In a duo, often there will be one very open, outgoing and chatty person, and in contrast, their partner will be more quiet and subdued.
At the same time, some couples are very similar. It can work both ways, I guess is what I'm trying to say.

Re: Do opposites attract?
I think so. Like in milky's example, I am very quiet and subdued whereas my love is outgoing and extroverted. She's good at math and biology - the two subjects I dislike. Etc. And yet we mesh perfectly.

Re: Do opposites attract?
my boyfriend and i are incredibly different, but it's true, we have rubbed off on each other. i think as long as you have some base similarities or morals or whatever then it will work out.

Re: Do opposites attract?
Of course not. Then I'd attract all the fat, ugly, short, bitchy, annoying, and un-humble bitches.

*gets all deep
aren't people like jigsaw pieces really?
so that way opposites must attract.
but in an evolutional aspect wouldn't it be more logical if opposites did attract.

Re: Do opposites attract?
I remember discussing this with a therapist who said that some people need an opposite personality type, whilst other people need someone similar.
She strongly recommended that I seek an opposite personality type, I think mostly because of the degree of my introversion.

Re: Do opposites attract?
To be honest people, there ain't no 'rules'. Why someone is attracted to another is a mystery. All this talk of 'do opposites attract?' is crap.
Sometimes an 'opposite' will be attractive and sometimes they won't.
Nor can you say that a relationship will work better or worse depending on wether your partner has an 'equal' or 'opposite' personality.

Re: Do opposites attract?
In my experience I find that opposites attract strongly for a short while while simmilar people have steady bonds for a longer time.

QFT
Plus, if i found someone who was basically the same as me we wouldnt get on, two amazingly shy quiet socially anxious people in a relationship = train wreck

That is true, other factors come into play in order to make a relationship work, but I think that most people gravitate toward certain types of people, be it a friendship or a love interest. I do, however, like people who are more outgoing than myself. People who can take the attention away from me whilst also drawing me out, instead of making me virtually invisible.
I also, think that as people age their personality can change a bit according to their life experiences. You can't really put people into a box because of that. You can only base any analysis on current knowledge and experiences. What the future holds is too unpredictable. For instance, twenty years ago my personality type came out INFP, today it comes out INFJ. So I wonder, in the future, what other aspects might also change.
Well...I'm rambling now...
Interesting topic.

There is no accounting for taste. I mean, people are attracted to me. That says it all, in my opinion.

True.
-------------------------------------------------
Also, I have noticed that it can work both ways. One person can be attracted to an opposite personality type, while one person can be attracted to a similar personality type. For example, there is this girl in my school that likes me and she is a very conservative catholic, very moral, all you would expect from that type of stereotype. While I am more of the weird stoner type. I am more attracted to the weird stoner types, but it seems she's attracted to ust the opposite.

Re: Do opposites attract?
IMHO, complimentary personality traits, often 'different', attract people to each other.
