Default I'm really confused and a bit scared.

I just kind of need to vent. I'm not sure if this belongs here but you're all mature and understanding so I'd like for it to be.

I don't know what I want in life. I mean, I do, but I don't. I'm only in 8th grade and for a year I've been planning on just dropping out and moving to the eastern part of the world and traveling. I don't want an education in school. I just want to get out of here. The only reason I make good grades and follow through is for my parents.

I'm to much of a pussy to rebel though. I mean, my father's a successful lawyer, my mother's an accountant and one of my brothers is the captain of the football team and top of his class and the other graduated 2 years early and is now a success on is own with a very nice house and steady career. What am I? A future drop out. I just don't fit in. I mean, I'm their perfect little girl. I couldn't disappoint the people I care about. I just want to do what I feel.

I plan on continuing my education but it's so hard. I just have no desire to. My parents won't accept anything but A's so I actually have to finish assignments and such, which will most likely all end up like shit since I have no determination.

If I explained everything to them they'd send me to a psychiatrist probably. Or try talking me out of it. I don't want anybody to try to change my mind. I want to come to means with myself.

I don't really feel like I have many people that care about me right now. I have my family and I know I do care for them and they care for me but I can't talk to them. I just want friends. All of my friends aren't really there for me though. They are either two faced assholes or druggies.

I would just really love to gather my thoughts but right now they're so scrambled and mixed up it seems impossible to begin.

I've got so much more to get out but I can't dig any deeper. My mind is mentally blocking my train of thoughts, it's late I've had little sleep.

Anyways, I suppose I'm just looking for some comfort in this. I'll accept any opinions but I'm not up for changing my mind right now. I'll have to do that on my own time.

It just sucks because I want to please everybody. By doing that, I won't be pleasing myself, ultimately. I know people live off people and such and that I can maintain stead "happiness" but in my own mind I believe true happiness can only be obtained by a life of simplicity.

Perhaps getting plastered and most likely drugged at a party and staying up for nearly 30 hours has some effect to my thoughts at the moment but this is how I'm feeling. Only deeper. If I was to type all of that, you would never read it or have any interest in keeping up.

Ahh, I'm just so fucking confused. I hate this. It feels like there's a fist inside of me clenching everything I have and keeping in a very important piece of information that could be extremely helpful.

Edit: I just read back over this. I sound so fucking ignorant and idiotic, flam me if needed.

Hah. That's what I do. I feel like I'm turning into a stoner, which I don't know how comfortable I am with.

I think you're confused, yeah. Most people go through a stage where they want to rebel, want to quit school and so forth. Unfortunately, I think you'll find - as most people do - that you'll ultimately be much better served by keeping in school. Remember this: You can always choose a life of simplicity if you're rich, but it's a hell of a lot harder to get rich if you're living simply. You can always drop out later, but if you ruin that prospective future (not "your future", note) it will be a lot harder to retrieve when/if you want it... and I think once you've been burned out on the Free Life, partyin', travelin' etc., you will want it back.

Not to be "agist", being only 16 myself, but I don't think you can really make such decisions at your (or my?) age. I know I think a lot differently now than I did in 8th.

So, anyway... might've missed the point of your post, just skimmed... but yeah, just do what you need to and keep your options open. You have plenty of time.

How old is 8th grade in america?

I think its best you keep at school, in the long run your'll be glad you did - espeically if you go into higher education later in your life.

How do you expect to be able to travel around europe? Where's the money coming from? I presuming you're early to mid teens so to really travel and do an OE then I think you need to be at least 18 otherwise you're going to find it hard (both legally, because of your age, and emotionally).

I'm 14. Yeah, I'm not planning on going now. I can't really even drop out yet. I'm not that ignorant. I'm aware of the things I would need. That's why I simply can't do it. I'd of course need a job that pays money.

I suppose the best thing to do is to just complete my education, get a decent paying career and then focus on living my life the way I'd like. I'll just be controlled like a fucking animal for the next 12 or so years of my life. +1 to teenage angst!

Do something. seriously. find something to keep your motivation up. i went through this same thing in middle school, but i fucked up, i gave in, i checked out of life. i nearly flunked out of sophomore year as a result. i'm trying to get back up, but its sooo much harder now.

i'm pretty much a nervous wreck, and have trouble doing the simplest tasks.

really, find something you like to do, and Do it. i used to have a whole lot of shit i liked to do, but i never really followed through on any of them, now i can't seem to get interested in anything anymore.

Not really, I didn't enjoy high school either.

I went into university at 17 because I wanted to get my education outta the way, before continuing with my life.

Well turns out that I really really like university.

School was a struggle but I got to my last year and tried to let myself have some fun (which meant failing classes because I could - my other classes pulled my grades up enough to get me uni enterance).

I too wanted (and still want to) travel, to get out and go to europe, to explore things but you have to be realistic about life.

In saying that there is NOTHING wrong with finishing high school, taking a gap year (or 5 ) and go travelling - it'll help you sort out what you want to do with your life, and what you want to achieve.

I've lost most of my motivation for anything. I like chemistry, reading, writing, guitar, destroying things, and experimenting drugs. That's about it. I don't really do many of those other than reading and playing guitar. I guess that's pretty good advice to offer. Thanks.

I know, but I need money to do this. I suppose I could get a job but that would require me actually wanting to work and dedicating myself to something, which I've never been able to do.

I still see no good reason to get a good education, really. Other than avoiding failure, which is inevitable anyways and I could overcome it.

Like I said, I'm a pussy. I will finish high school. I probably won't even travel or take the year off. I'll just remain miserable and a slave to everybody and myself.

Welcome to adolesence! Don't get me wrong, I think that despite your youth you are one of the more 'adult' posters here (whatever 'adult' means).

But you are 14! That means that you are in the middle of the emotional and hormonal malestrom that is puberty.

Try to step back and not take the situation or yourself too seriously.Oh btw drink, drugs and obscenely long parties won't help the situation...they just numb the pain.

I went through the same thing at your age, and now that I'm older, I see how I could have handled it better. So, here's my advice.

1. Don't drop out of school. Finish high school and maintain decent grades throughout.

2. Experiment with drugs, but don't let them take over your lifestyle.

3. Public education is retarded. Now is when you need to start educating yourself. Read books on philosophy, world culture, religion, history, ect.

4. Don't worry about boyfriends and if you do, do not get pregnant. Do not have unprotected sex.

5. As soon as you're able, get a job and start saving money. Don't waste money on fancy name brand clothing. Will people think you're less cool? Maybe. Know what? Ten years from now, 95% of them are going to be boring 9-5 types with a very narrow view of the world.

6. If you still want to travel when you graduate from high school, put college on hold, pack a bag, and take off. Stay gone for a few years. Travel far and wide. Don't look back until you're ready to go home.

7. Take my advice until you're 18. After that, you can do whatever you want to do. Don't ever let anyone make life decisions for you.

one thing i recommend doing is a foreign exchange program in high school. i did one my sophomore year, to russia, and it was awesome. i was there for 5 months. it was really freeing.

you seem to feel stifled and trapped. maybe your parents can help you to not feel that way if you talk to them. there might be a school or program that is better for you, or you might need time to travel and get away, like i suggested.

This is a really good suggestion. The few weeks i spent on exchange programs ,aged 14-15, changed my life.

Yeah actually do this ^

Look into an excahnge - I've seen friends come back from these (and they were often quite lost at the start, like you) and they've come back mature, focused and a lot happier.

You don't know everything, regardless of how it may seem. This is a simple fact. You've lived, but there's alot more living to be done.

What's best for you is not necessarily the foolish types of fun and enjoyment you see around you on a day to day basis. It can be very attractive and a lot of fun, but you eventually wake up and look back.

You will tire of the lifestyle. Hedge your bets.

Travel, finding yourself, all these things are good ideas. The you that you are today will not be the person you are in 5 years. You probably won't want the same things and may not talk to most of the people you're friends with today.

Live well and with happiness, but realize that you need to ensure you can live well and happily in the future.

I think some of you are looking over the meaning.

I'm completely aware of the fact that I may loose my friends I have now but I'm not going to give them up. I have fun with them. I'd just like to be able to talk to somebody.

I would also nver fall back on my parents money. I'd feel like worthless shit and they wouldn't stand for it anyways. My brother tried doing it once, he no longer lives here.

Anyways, I think I'll look into the exchange programs. That'd be a lot of fun. I do educate myself quite often on world wide cultures, and philsophy and such.

Thanks for all of your help. Sorry to bother you all with this teenage drama bullshit. I'm not the only person that goes through it, I don't mean to be feeling sorry for myself. Growing up is hard.

You don't need to do that to excell. Plenty of people manage very well without studying. I'm not an advocate of a person having no future without education.

That being said, STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY. At your level, you're still learning basic life skills. You won't be doing yourself a favour to drop it.

You need what the military calls PT.

No really, you also seem to be getting burned out by school. No big deal, happens to all of us.

Anyways, after discovering I didnt learn how to study during high school, I talked to an instructor on studying tips. One thing he reccomended was working out for an hour or so, or just go running. It'll keep up your spirits, keep ya looking great (which is always good ) and best of all: Give you runners high and a clear focused mind.

Finish high school or at the very least get your GED. As much as I used to think at your age that being a wanderer would be a spiritual, enlightening thing, the reality is that you will be sucking cock for spaghetti-O's if you don't attain some level of education. Just do it. If you decide to not continue with college after that, then so be it. Right now though, you're barely old enough to hold a legal job. Just think it over, girl.

Yeah, I thought about it and I figure that there's too many people with money in this world and too many people that think this way but don't go through with it. I'm not going to start a revolution and I know I'll end up unhappy, despite my state of mind right now.

The best thing for me to do is to suck it up, go through school, go to college, get a good career(psychologist right now ), and then do what I want when I have the money to do so.

If I have money and I'm comfortable I'll be able to travel, relax, write, mess around as much as I'd like. I'd love to live a simple life but in the world today it's impossible. So, yeah, that's where I'm standing.

Your in 8th grade. No matter how much you wanted to drop out and travel you can't. You have no power until your atleast old enough to hold a steady full time job. Give that idea up. Just stop trying so hard. Who cares if you have a C instead of an A. Take it easy. Being a kid is too easy to pass up. You can slide along school with low grades it's not hard at all. A highschool diploma looks the same wether or not you got straight A's.

I'd like to just live outside in a tent and travel across europe and that part of the world for a while. Of course, I'd save money so that I could get food and other paraphinalia needed, but I'd love to just live carefree like that for atleast a year.

So, not like that of a monk I take it. I was just curious, as I long to take a lengthy retreat to a monastery or the like. Not for travel....but for reflection and peace. (does a monastery accept women?)

hell, you're young. you're practically at the beginning of puberty, which will be the biggest time of upheaval in your life. but believe me, it'll all fall into place unless you seriously fuck up. if you don't drop out, don't become addicted to anything and don't become a criminal, you will most definitely be fine.

you have TONS of time to find out what you want. nobody expects you to know it at this point. give yourself a break. but stay in school, because you will regret if for the rest of your life if you drop out. it's only a few years to go, but it will help you a lot.

peace,

Argus

I felt the same at 14, confused. Now, after two years of dwelling on it all, I've just turned 16 and things are much clearer. Things become easier to digest when you think about them more realistically, accept that you can and can't do things right now. It doesn't mean you have to settle with crap forever, but sometimes things are out of your hands or just have to be done: such as school=]

Make the most of school, it looks to be a pretty easy ride in comparison to what comes next.

Crimethinc., or one of their affiliates, publishes a really good guide about alternative education and dropping out. I would really suggest sticking it out through highschool, but if you have ambition and a game plan, dropping out can open new doors for you. That isn't to say alot of doors are going to close, but you won't necessarily be working at McD's for the rest of your life. I have a few good friends from highschool that dropped out, some are doing very well, others not so much. Two of them landed incredible jobs at the peace core/americore (sp?). If you want to travel abroad, definetly look into those. Peace corp has a program where you teach ESL in other countries. The stipend is very minimal, so if you are a high-maintance gal, that may not be for you. But it is a relaxed working environment.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, there are other life plans besides the one which you have been raised to believe is the only one. You can be sucessful without a highschool or college degree, but it takes alot of hard work and ambition. Judging by your admittedly apathetic position, I think you should take some time and really consider your goals in life.

But, as a caveat, let me mention some of the things dropping out of is fucking awesome. So muchschool will do. First, you likely won't be able to go to college. No senior prom; no close friendships and relationships bonded through the commonality of highschool; statistically lower income (debatable); and limited job oppurtunities.

My advice: Stick it out, or get educated about alternative education.

Best of luck,

Well you could consider this little rhyme by PackFM on school, kinda an eyeopener on the kinds of people that made it without a formal education.

"It ain't the only way to measure success or intelligence

Need evidence? Well, you can ask 8 US Presidents

Or make a film helmed by Tarantino or John Woo

Without Pacino, Robert De Niro and Tom Cruise

No diplomas, but they all got Oscars, you can't lose

I know most of you is wishin that you was in their shoes

Guess who dropped out too

Chris Rock and Cuba Gooding

Bill Cosby's GED is on the shelf next to the pudding

And not to mention Ray Charles, cuz that's walkin a fine line

But your degree comes from studyin' Shakespeare and Einstein

A whole lotta people made it that never graduated

That's why with education, I never been fascinated

Your lectures are overrated, so take a breath and save it

'Cuz it's real life that teaches you lessons that can't be graded... "

Look at it this way. If you stay and school and do well afterwards you can go to college and get a job that involves travelling to different places around the world. This way your parents are happy and you get to travel and do whatever all the while being paid for it. I mean if you run away your parents are gonna look for you and shit. Airline tickets are expensive how do you plan on paying for that stuff? Not to mention get a passport

Yeah, a lot of them will accept people who are traveling. You get very basic accommodation and they generally like you to donate money after you stay. It's a very quiet environment. As a woman, you'd be pretty socially isolated I think, as the monks aren't exactly going to talk your ear off. Most of them have early curfews as well.

You can do that when you're older. A lot of people do, and it's pretty similar to how I live a good part of the time. Truth is though, living carefree comes at a price and in some ways it's much more difficult than staying in one place and living the 9-5 every day. Just keep in mind that by doing that, you're only trading one set of difficulties for another.

He ain't lying either!!!

I'm stressed and I'm tired. I run 3 miles 3 times a week, and I study 7-25 hours per week, over material that sometimes that just doesnt make sense.

But everyday, I wake up with a smile and I'm normally in a great mood, despite all the shit I'm going through.

Why? I followed my dreams, and I'm doing what I want. And I love it here.

And the beautiful thing is: I'm doing great, and my ex is a whore.

So remember, when your in school, and people are fucking with you, and smile at the idea of you dressed in your working clothes, going to work to do what you love, pulling into McDonalds, and that asshole who fucked with ya in H.S. is taking your order.

I didn't read any of the replies, so I apologise if what I say has already been said...

Anyway, I think everyone goes through the crisis of "what the hell am I doing with my life", although I think you are entering this stage a bit early.

If I were you I would suck it up and at least get a high school diploma. You're young, you've got lots of time to figure things out.

I can completely understand where you're coming from though. The main reason I'm going to university is for my parents, and the secondary reason is that I'm hoping it'll help me make more money later. Neither of which seem like very good reasons to go to school, in my opinion.

But I figure I may as well give it a try, and maybe you should too?

Grade 8 is way too early to drop out. No matter how smart you are, you will get alot less respect if you only have an eighth grade education. Even though I think school is useless once you know how to read, write and do basic math. But most people don't share this sentiment and will probably think less of you if you drop out of school.

And I think I'm going to stop now, because in reviewing my post because there is no constructive advice...I think I'm basically in the same situation as you, just a few years down the line...Hmmm...

Edit - just read the replies, and thought I should add: I went on an exchange too. I spent my first semester of grade 12 in Scotland. It definitely was a learning experience and I had lots of fun...But school sucked there. Once everyone got over the novelty of my exchange studentness, I didn't really fit in. And my host mum was a huge fucking bitch, so that kind of sucked. I did it through EF, and it cost around $10 000, plus spending money. But if you're parents are a lawyer and accountant, they should be able to afford it. Just make a deal with them, you'll keep your grades up and then in highschool you get to go on an exchange.

I would recommend that you go to a non english speaking country though. That's the only thing I regret about going to Scotland, is that I didn't get to learn a new language.

You could fake your own death if you are that worried about your parents honor and all.. I have definately considered this, and then if you do take off, nobody will come looking for you.

Just a friendly thought..

Thanks, those are a lot of really great replies.

I do know everybody goes through this and I'll deal with it. I've dealt with a lot that an average person my age does not, this will be no acception.

I have to go to school tomorrow, and I'm getting my report card, which sucks. I skipped school almost 3 weeks straight, I know I'll be grounded for my grades.

I just really kind of want a change. My parents are divorced and my dad offered for me to come back and live with him. I'm considering this after Christmas break. I'm not so sure because I love my friends here and I know everybody. I just really need to do what's best.

One thing causing me so much stress is my mother. I mean, I love her, but we just don't get along. She's one of the most idiotic people I've ever met in my entire life. Most of this is to blame on drugs, I'm not really so if it's natural stupidity. Anyways, she's extremely immature and I've lived with her since I was about 4. Well, she'll admit to me raising myself pretty much and she's never there to motivate me at all.

I mean, I've been my own motivation since I was in preschool, besides my dad which I rarely saw. It'd be really nice to just have somebody there to keep me going and I'm stopping because I have nobody pushing me forward. I suppose that may be why I made this thread, to get others replies so that I could keep myself going. I mean, I don't know if that is, but it sure as hell sounds rational.

I don't want to leave North Carolina. I do need to do what's best for me though. My dad's an athlete and he does stuff with me a lot. So, I know I'll be happier and more active there ultimately, I just have life time friends keeping me back here.

Anyways, I guess I'm going to get up and go, and then I'll let you know how it's working out down south.
