How the hell do you deal with irrational foreigners?
And by irrational foreigners I mean I mean those people I call my parents. This is going to sound like a whiny, angsty, "I hate my parents" rant, but I need perspective from intelligent people and not my idiot friends who just say "move out." Not feasible. Anyway...
My family is full of psychological issues. My dad's side is riddled with depression and alzheimers. My mom's side... some weird form of OCD and... I guess insanity is a good word for it. Noone likes her, or her parents, or anyone related to them because they're all fucking nutjobs. I don't know what the hell my dad was thinking, but anyway.
Lately, the 2 of them have lost their minds. Seriously. I've been bugging my parents about getting a dog for a while now, and they alternate days on who wants one and who doesn't. I thought I was making progress, my mom was already planning on buying it one of those stupid sweaters. Next day, I bring up the topic again (and at this time, I had a horrible migraine, and everyone knows not to piss me off if I have a migraine). My mom starts screaming at me about (honestly) not eating soup, and not going to church. Out of the blue. Just goes completely batshit on me. So I yell back, and then leave because that's the only way to deal with this type of situation.
My dad gets pissed at me. Next day goes on this whole rampage about how I have no respect (no shit) and how I'm a horrible child and blah blah blah. Right, whatever. Which one of your children tried to kill you? Yeah, not me. Anyway, whenever they're "talking" to me I have to either freak out or leave. I can't have a logical conversation with these people because they bring up the most random things, claim things were said that weren't even mentioned, and so on.
And herein lies my problem. (Sorry this is so long, by the way.) There's gotta be a way to have a civil conversation with my own parents. I can do it with everyone else. I honestly don't think I'm the problem though. I don't yell for no reason. Nor do I have to write down everything because I forget it all. I do get blamed for it though.
Help please? My home life is starting to really, really suck, but I can't leave yet. I'm in school, they're still paying for it, unfortunately. And I think I'm developing an ulcer from the constant stress.

Re: How the hell do you deal with irrational foreigners?
Ask your doctor about taking Prilosec OTC 20mg 2x daily for the stomach acid problem. Seriously, it's amazing. I had pharyngitis last year, and that little pill fixed the stomach acid problem within 24 hours.
As far as the other issues.......I suppose if they're both nuts then you can't do anything until you can move out. Stay out of the house as much as possible. Do your homework. Maybe talk to them one on one about how you're feeling. I'm not sure what else to really say, because the situation sounds like it sucks a lot. I hope it improves soon.

Re: How the hell do you deal with irrational foreigners?
If by school you mean college, then spend less time at home. Try distancing yourself as much as possible without actually moving out, since that won't work for you right now. You'd be amazed at how much bad blood gets forgotten once you're out on your own more, and especially when you reach a point when you can move out and have your own life.
The best thing you could do is try to talk to them one on one and have a rational conversation and be very honest and to the point about how you feel. Unfortunately, some people just aren't rational in any situation and if that is how they are, there's not much you can do. Instead of getting mad, try being absolutely calm when they start getting onto you. Instead of yelling back, simply get up quietly and remove yourself from the situation.
If you're still in high school, there's not a whole lot you can do but suck it up and take my advice from above. By getting a rise out of you, your mom may be feeding her own need for yelling/drama in the household. Don't give it to her. Take it away the instant she comes looking for it.

No more doctors! And the thing is, I've occasionally been able to have conversations with my dad. And he's agreed with me that my mom's a goddamn lunatic and that she most definitely need a psychologist, but it's too late now. And then, he spins around, and tells me I'm the problem. I think they should go back to just buying my love like they used to. Yeah it sucked (yes, sucked, I'd rather have affection than material bullshit) but at least it was semi-peaceful.

Re: How the hell do you deal with irrational foreigners?
SO you're legally an adult...although by the sound of it not yet a woman.
No I'm not being nasty, I just want you to realise that your friends are probably right and you do need to move out.
We have a saying about 'your own oven being worth gold'. Means basically that mother and daughters should avoid living together in the same house after a certain age. You are too old to be the 'daughter'.
Even if moving out means poverty..it is worth it. Somewhere in the bible it says something about 'better a crust in peace than steak in disharmony'.
Here endeth the sermon...

That makes quite a lot of sense. And yeah I know I should move out. I might be able to in about a year. It's financially impossible for me right now, and even if it was, it's impossible to get an apartment where I live right now. Crazy, crazy economic boom.
I'm definitely too old to be the daughter. My mom treats me like I'm 10 years old sometimes. Well, most of the time. Unless she's telling me that I should grow up... I'm surprised I'm not more emotionally traumatized.

A group of fellow female students sharing a house/appartment? Or is that not done where you are?

I don't exactly get along with females. I think I'd rather live with 2 crazy people in a nice house than with a bunch of crazy girls in some shithole.
I'm just looking to make my living situation tolerable for a bit longer.

Re: How the hell do you deal with irrational foreigners?
It depends on how they view you.
I suggest having a conversation, one on one, with each of them about how they perceive you.
If they're looking at you like a child, you need to change this perception; not through stupid acts.

Their view of me changes like, minute to minute. One minute I'm being told I'm an adult, I'm responsible, blah blah blah, and the next I'm getting crap about being immature and stupid and "act your age" for no reason.
I don't do stupid things. Not anymore, anyway. I'm over the rebellious teenager phase. Still rebellious, but now it's all rational.

Re: How the hell do you deal with irrational foreigners?
Well.. I've got a tiny little studio flat in bristol (england). Well, actually it's in one of the tiny towns on the side of bristol, but whatever.
If it gets to the extent of physical violence, let me know.I extend this offer to anyone I know online, if shit gets tough you can come hide out with me aslong as you dont lead a rampaging trail of angry parents and violent partners to my front door.

If it's expensive to get a flat where you live, move somewhere else. browse flatmates wanted, most people can't afford their own place. grow up.

Trust me, you're not the only one, I though my Mother was so fucked up, but half of it is me as well, can't move out cause I'm going to school, and starting college soon.
Don't want to move out cause I can't really rely on anyone as well, just my bf cause my dad's too shitty. (they're separated and divorced)...Things can be alot worse, instead of lamenting on your situation think about what you have and how much life can be worse, you'll appreciate what you have, and these events will make you stronger, and when it's time you become a parent, at least you'd've learned what not to be..your parents.
Good luck.

Hahahaha. Do you really think so?
Anyway.
In my experience, the solution is to spend as much of your time at home holed up in your room, only leaving for meals etc. After a while, however shitty your family are being, their guilt at having driven you away will make them be nicer to you.
After a while, you find that you can mostly avoid people even if you're living in the same house with them, without even going to extreme lengths.
It got me through my teenage years, anyway (well, up to when I moved out to Uni this summer, just after I turned 19).

Re: How the hell do you deal with irrational foreigners?
I had issues living with my parents, my father is pretty unbearable. I moved out at age 17 to go to university in another city. Each time I came back to live (I'm currently doing it for the 2nd time, because it's cheaper for me to stay here over the summer) things were a lot better with the relationship I have with my parents.
It now only takes about a couple of weeks for my dad and I to fly off the handle at me (or each other), for being in the same house.. not a couple of days haha.
You kinda sound immature for a 19 year old in my eyes also, but that of course is my personal opinion. By age 19 you should have learnt to just let go of that bullshit and to ignore it.
