My parenting hits a new low...
Do your parents ever come out with this sort of crap? Or is it just me?
Today I was doing some DIY and went into my youngest son's bedroom to vacuum up the sawdust (cos of the xboxes, computers, laptop, stereo system etc etc).
The room was a pig sty (my apologies to pigs cos they are actually very clean animals).
I particularly objected to the dirty eating utensils and chocolate ground into the carpet.
Soooo I went downstairs and read him the riot act or as we say the 'levites' (ie Thou shalt NOT).
What i said roughly translated as ' YOU may have no food or drink whatsoever in your room from now on , as you are obviously not old enough to be trusted with such a privilege!'
So i had a sulky teenager and about five minutes later it suddenly occurred to me how fucking stupid what i had just said to him was.
Not old enough to be trusted with food?? ...yet this is the kid (15) whom I am trusting enough to let him go spend Xmas ALONE with his (older)girlfriend, in her flat, a couple of hundred miles away and while there indulge in all the sins of the flesh, dope and MTV.
I think i might need to reevaluate a few things here...
Anyway totse make me feel better and tell what absolute bollocks your loving mommies and daddies have spouted.

Re: My parenting hits a new low...
I think they trash their rooms because it's their own space. I have loads of friends who are the same.
I assume they are tidier when eating at the table or in another room to their own, and at other peoples' houses, is that not more important?

Re: My parenting hits a new low...
My room is a tip is messy there is stuff everywhere but in no way is it dirty, I can deal with mess but not dirt its when you let food ferment and NEVER clean it then its disgusting. I cant clean my room all in one go its too difficult. I have an ever changing number of running fish tanks ranging in size and all my electronics and all the junk that I want to throw out. I also have an en-suite bathroom. It looks messy but Its kept hygienically clean. If peoples rooms are dirty it says something about their personal hygiene.

Heh, that's not too bad really. As messy as I am, I gotta say, old chocolate ground into the carpet is pretty foul.
My dad would just barge in and be like "It smells likes shit in here...are you smoking dope again??" "No." "Anyway, clean up your fuckin' room. This isn't a goddamn hotel!" *slam*

Dont worry, i'm 15 and my...
Wait, my mums tidied all my cups/plates/glasses/etc up.
Anyways, what I was going to say is I am exactly the same as your 15 year old son. Except I dont have chocolate ground into the carpet. Currently I see a few Frosties, and a Skittle, and a malteser.
Hmm, I might consider hoovering it.

That's not really so unusual. When I was 15, My brothers and I were not allowed to have food in 'the basement', because we kept leaving food/dirty dishes all over.

Perhaps a phonecall to the girlfriend to warn her not to let him eat outside of the kitchen?
Perhaps inquire to if she owns a bib, or if he has to bring his own?
Sippy cups? Plastic cutlery? High chair? A "Flush Me" sign on the toilet?
I can't suggest any of it, but it made me smile.

You know, Jack, if you really thought about it long and hard, you'd understand that being able to have food and drinks in his own room really is much more of a burden on him than spending Christmas with his girl, somewhere far away...
He's far to comfortable in his own room, so he's much more likely to mess it all up. It's not a low, really, it's a logical high.

Hey! I'm only 19, and we had a record player, and an 8track until I was like 10 or 11.
The only "bad" parenting I can put on my mom is removing the comdom jar (it's supposed to hold candy I think), so that me and my brother will impregnate someone, and give her grandbabies.

i can remember my dad telling me when i got old enough to move out,he was going to come to my new place and knock holes in the walls, just to let me know how it felt,me and my brothers were constantly knocking holes in the walls, wrestling around and bam! knee thru a wall or getting mad and punching the doors and stuff...thank god he never actually did it.
he once moved me and my brothers into a tent in our back yard in the dead of winter, said if we were going to live like animals it wasnt going to be in his house....sometimes i just want to go to my dad and apolagise for being such a horrible kid

Vinyl is undergoing a big resurgence, and there's alot of electric music you can only get on wax (and it's been that way for years).
So if your kid was really up to date he would be using vinyl.

I don't think that's that bad. If he's got food ground into his bedroom carpet may be he isn't old enough to be trusted with food, hahaha. His ability to manage food doesn't have to have anything to do with ability to manage a girl. Though, if he's still drinking from a sippy cup he might not be ready for that either.
Cheers,

the bad parenting talks i got were "well if you dont like, then leave!" being a hard headed teen, I would leave and not ocme back for a few days. And then i'd get this "why the fuck did you runaway?!?!?"
"I didnt run away, you told me to leave"
then a "DO you think this is funny you smart ass?"
and of course me leaving again

Re: My parenting hits a new low...
You cant anyone else judge your parenting. Has to be your decisions. Im 16 male, and my room is tidy, i hoover my carpet once a week, maximum i have a glass in is 2 days, and i had a beer can for 3 days, and mum told me to drink it.. still good , i think the best lesson you can teach a child is that no matter how much you nag, the only way they will change is from experience...
Also as a note, I do a lot of housework... dusting, washing the floors, hoovering stairs... just stuff to make my mum happy really

Re: My parenting hits a new low...
Now that i've left for college, my dearest mother has decided to "clean" aka search through my room and rearrange as she sees fit.
Which is all well and good, its my parents house- they can do what they want. But she has this strange habit of leaving whatever incriminating evidence in my bed, so when i come home i find an almost empty fifth of whiskey (i obviously forgot it was there or it would have empty and gone) in my bed. Its happened with several other things, and i just dont understand.
What point is she trying to make here? "HAHA look i found the shit you didnt want me to! nananana! id ground your ass but i cant!"
Seriously though- wtf?
Lol, and one time i spent too much time reading books and not doing schoolwork that they grounded me from all books and reading.
They came to see if i was doing homework a few hours later and saw me staring blankly at a wall. When asked why the fuck i was not doing homework i replied, "I cant- im grounded from all books and reading, you were pretty clear on that. So since i cant read..."
They thought it was less amusing than i did. I cant for the life of me imagine why...

Jack's got every right to go into his son's room, and get pissed that it's messy. It's his house. If he started snooping or something, that's another story. But wanting your house to be clean isn't bad parenting.

Chillax man all 15 year olds are like that, when I was 15 I used my carpet as an ashtray, now I'm a clean freak and keep my living area as flawless as possible. He'll get over his messy shit phase, just tell him to keep the mess limited to his room and that when he's old enough to comprehend how much of a slob he was that he's responsible for removing the filth and making the room look acceptable again.
After I demolished my carpets when I was his age I at least had the common courtesy to my parents to tear it out and install new laminate/repaint the walls/throw away useless shit.

Re: My parenting hits a new low...
I think you didn't discipline him enough as a young child. My dad got right on it, every time I fucked up *WHAM* canoe in the face. And he'd carry around a lawnmower battery and randomly shock me with it. Just kidding, there were no canoes.
Anyway, you might be able to fix him, but 15 year olds are damn messy(I know, I am one), and fucking bitchy, so you have to discipline, discipline, discipline. Make him afraid of you.
Anyway, how old is his girlfriend? She's got her own place, so I'm assuming she's 17+? He takes after his dad, I guess.

My dad used to impose rules like that. In fact, I specifically remember him saying "no food in your room." If he's anything like me, he'll probably keep it clean for a week or so and then pretend that the rule doesn't exist and do it anyway.

Kids will learn their own way, eventually. At his age, you can't influence him near as much as his friends will, not a pleasnt thought, but it happens to everyone. Just nudge him in the right direction.
I don't know if letting him go a couple hundred miles away was a very good idea, though. Invite her to stay at your house next year, eh?
hah, scratch that one.

As I rule, I never have food in my bedroom.
But, your parenting style seems to be what is necessary. Sure, what you said may have sounded pretty damn stupid, considering how much trust you have in him. But you mustn't forget if a person has a bigger responsibility upon their shoulders they will always try to uphold it and tend to ignore the smaller less important things.
My room is constantly messy, but never dirty.
Sorry if this doesnt' make sense, Jack your parenting skills are whacked, but very appropriate.

Re: My parenting hits a new low...
Experiencing sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll is one thing...Leaving the bedroom filthy is another.
I wouldn't say it was bollocks, mate...I'd just say you are thinking a little too far into it!
You can trust him enough to make his own decisions about what to do with this chick but you want him to be able to clean up his filth.
My dad did the same to me.
He didn't mind/care what I did when it came to going out, getting drunk or fucking any tart that came my way...But he would hit the roof if my bedroom was a state!
Seems normal to me anyways!

Re: My parenting hits a new low...
Couldn't be bothered reading all of this, so I'll just give you my input.
I still get yelled at when I go home and accidentally spill something. I don't let it soak into the rug like your kid, but there was a time when I would have done so. My parents did something similar to what you did and I am a clean fellow since.
There is a big difference between trusting someone mentally with a relationship like you do for your son and trusting that he won't let chocolate grow into a new civilization in the rug. One is mental, and one is pure laziness. They're not really comparable.

Zek's bedroom at his dad's was appalling. I got goosebumps everytime I walked in there. It was horrible. I am by no means exaggerating. The was not a single spot on the floor that you could see. Clothes, rotting food, trash, etc. I would get very nervous being in there. Then I cleaned it.. For three days. Thank goodness we minimized that problem before the baby got here. Ugh..

LOL the police already think i run an underage brothel and drugs den! Several incidents with naked fourteen year old girls smashed outta their tiny boxes on WKD seem to have given our brave Boys in Blue the wrong impression about our family life.
Really some people are soooo picky...

My parents used to say stuff like that, hell they still do when im home from uni. i just used to ignore it. My room was always messy but never dirty. The only dirt you could ever really find and that was dust in hard to reach places.
As it stand atm, with 2 essays, a poster and a dissertation to work on my uni room is messier than id like it to be and its dustier too, but i think my works more important right now.
Personally i thnk my dad would have been more angry about the naked 14 year olds, the mess and the drinking he could cope with. My motheron the other hand, well im the youngest so as far as shes concerned im not allowed to have any fun

Mephisto's guide to parenting:
Let them do whatever the fuck they want as long as it doesnt bother you.
If it bothers you and you want it to stop, warn them.
If they dont take the warning sell all their stuff including bed, carpet, curtains etc.
If they still disobey stop feeding them.
If they still disobey take them on a LONG drive to the middle of no where and set them free.

Not bad, but not nearly enough beating in that list.

Re: My parenting hits a new low...
Frankly I can't have food in my room, but I do it to myself because I'm a fattyfat-fatfat. My parents really don't care if I took an entire pizza in there. It helps you lose weight because you have to sit in the kitchen and eat less.

Re: My parenting hits a new low...
Chocolate is nothing. Nothing. One time I left for Texas on a plane and drove back (over 5,000 miles) arriving 3 weeks later. Before I left some orange juice in my room was already starting to mold. I came back and it was fucking green house in a glass. Several colors, and about an inch of grey mold. Amazing.
I will make a thread and have pics of the shit decomposing in my room. I win.
BTW currently I have a full glass of cranberry juice (circa over 2 months ago) some scrambled eggs (ehh 5 weeks ago) and a glass of coffee that has been in my room so long that most of it has evaporated, however the months it was in my room saw many color changes and layers.

Damn fucking right. The people I know know what to do with a vinyl. Throw that shit on the turn tables and start mixing!

Re: My parenting hits a new low...
He won't forget your advice some time down the track, because when he moves out with his girlfriend or into a college dorm, he'd get the shit kicked out of him or have to pay boatloads for repairs when he moves out.
The epiphany of the merits of cleanliness (ie no dirt but mess is still fine by me (as long as its my mess)) in my childhood came because of my sister being a horder of all things sweet. Anyway she had a basket full of sweets (candies etc.) which she forgot about when we went on a long trip (2 months or so) and the house had been overrun with mice. To say the least my mum blew her top and set the wheels in motion for her brand of discipline.
From that point on, if we ate we had to do it at the kitchen table.

Re: My parenting hits a new low...
Jack, I think you need to teach your son some common sense. No fucking way would I leave food in my room. I don't leave dirty dishes in my room for longer than 1 minute after I'm done eating, which I was my hands after eating, before touching my expensive keyboard/mouse.
I clean my own room, I don't have a dad to do it and my mother doesn't do it because she works all day.
I smoke weed and leave weed ash though, so I guess I'm not so clean.
I wish I had a girlfriend that would fuck me, I'm 16 by the way.
