I haven't really updated in a while as I've been sicker than sick. My most recent appointment was on Tuesday Oct. 31. Because I was unsure of my last mentral period, I had to have an ultrasound to figure how far into the pregnancy I am. So here is my account of the appointment.

Appointment: I took an obsenely early appointment at 9AM. Zek and I arrived at the OB/GYN Clinic groggy and anxious.

Before an ultra sound is taken, the nurse will alert you (24 hours or more in advance) to come with a full bladder. At least 24 oz. of water to be consumed before the appointment. Now, for a pregnant woman this is VERY difficult to manage, as we have to pee every 5 minutes anyway. The full bladder helps with the clarity of the ultrasound waves.

We're finally called in to the ultra sound room. It was a dark room with an exam bed and a chair for a guest. A monitor is set up in the corner of the room so that you can see what is being shown to them on the machine.

I was instructed to unzip my pants and lift up my shirt. The technician folded a large paper towel into the top of my underwear so not to get them gooey with the gel. She sqeezed the clear jelly (Very simiar to KY Jelly) onto the top of the doppler-like instrument used to transmit the image. (As you can tell, I don't know what it's called) The jelly is very warm and helps to relax my mucles. She then uses the instrument and presses into my abdomen. First she searches high on my abdomen, then goes lower.

At this point, you are in a great amount of discomfort. They don't press lightly and keep in mind that your bladder is VERY full.

She finally finds the baby in the lower left part of my abdomen. At this point the baby is very well-formed. It looks like a baby with two legs, two arms, a torso, head, eyes, nose, mouth, etc. The fingers and toes weren't very well defined yet in the picture. The tech. measured the fetus from head to toe and concluded the it was a little over 2 inches. It is moving around quite nicely with a heart rate of 160.

At this point she thinks it is looking like a girl. But it is still very early and she said she could be wrong.

She determined that I was about 11 weeks 2 days along on that date. My due date is May 18.

I'm still kinda wishing for a boy, though Zek wants another girl (the woman).

My next appointment is Nov. 27, I'll update again after that.

If I were pregnant though, I wouldn't want to go through numerous scans and tests all the time. I hate to sound hippie, but it doesn't seem natural!

I know what you mean. But it's hard to have a baby today without all of them.

In a way, it makes me feel better knowing that my baby really is okay and looks okay when compared to the norm.

Yeah, it's true that if the the means are there, it must be really good just to know everything is turning out ok. I just view things differently because my mother never did any of that, and had home-births.

One thing I want to say is that hospital births are very clinical, but not always the best thing. Being put on your back can make you feel helpless, besides which, you can't actually use all the proper muscles that way, which is more likely to cause strain and injury. It's not nautral to give birth that way, and I hope you realize you have a choice, no matter what you eventually choose!

I take it that you've never given birth before?

You can choose your birthing position, they don't lay you on your back anymore. Birthing classes really help you to decide which position will benefit you more. You are in complete control of just about everything. Baby is even delivered directly to your stomach in most cases. I prefer natural birthing (without drugs). But I may have to have another c-section. If that's the case, I'll be nice and drugged.

It's totally not like that in the UK, as far as I know (well nobody talks about such things or seems to know anything about it).

Sounds like you get a much better deal, and no, I have yet to give birth!
