Default Recovering from a series of embarassing social blunders..

So there's this girl who works as a cashier at the liquor store I always go to who is amazingly gorgeous. Very cute. Almost a perfect 10. Actually, due to the novelty of her voice, I'd say she would be a 10. She has the cutest voice I have ever heard. It's one of the main things every guy talks about when they're discussing her.

So anyway, since I'm there quite often (sometimes as much as several times in one night), we have started to get to know each other a bit. It started with idle chit chat and small talk, but has now deepened to a more personal level.

On Friday (last night), I was there with a friend that I will call K, to pick up liquor before going to a friends place nearby. She called me a "party animal" because I was buying so much liquor this time. She also asked why I wasn't with a certain other friend that I bring with me often. She then commented on how weird he is. As I was paying her, she stared into my eyes for a while. It kind of put me on the spot, as I had nothing to say. She then asked me; "Do I make you nervous?". I just said; "What? No..." Then she commented on my shirt, and asked me where I got it.

After leaving the liquor store, I told my friend K about our little conversation. He told me about how this one friend of ours (whom I shall refer to as M) always brags about how she flirts with him (and then we had a few jokes about it, since this guy has an ego that doesn't match the rest of him... he thinks he's god's gift to women. Kinda like I do in a way, but at least I get MUCH better results than he does).

So when we get back to M's place, my friend K tells M that I asked the liquor store girl out. M looks to me with a shocked "O RLY?!" face. I of course decided to play along; "Uhh, yeah... I asked her out to the pub next door for dinner and drinks on tuesday and she said yes." M was really shocked. Later on though I came clean, and so he said he was going to go down there and ask her out.

Obviously, he pussies out and comes back empty handed. So my other friends are coaxing me on, telling me that it's my chance, and that I should go for it. Now that I have a bit of liquid courage in me, I tell them I'll do it. K offers to drive, but says that if I don't ask her, then I have to walk back. I accept the offer.

We get there, and I'm picking up a 2 liter bottle of coke for mix. I start to get really nervous. This chick is extremely hot, and works as a cashier at a liquor store on top of that, so she must get asked out constantly. Eventually, I muster up just enough courage to make an attempt. As I'm buying the 2 liter, I ask her what she usually does after work. She tells me that after work that night, she would be going to the pub next door. I ask her if she's going with anyone, and she just says, in an almost DUH kinda way; "Yeah..." I just say: "I meant... nevermind...", and I quickly sign my VISA receipt. This older guy behind me in line says: "I think he's trying to ask you out" At this point I don't know what to do, so I turn around, and I walk right into the door. Talk about embarrassing.

Then later on, to make matters worse, I get even drunker, and decide that I'm going to go to the bar to meet her, despite my series of fuck ups. I get there, and she's still not there, but I see a few people I know. I end up talking to this one 27 year old girl for a bit. She's actually pretty decent looking, but has a boyfriend (who isn't there at the time, but still..)

I eventually see the liquor store girl, and I go up and talk to her. She tells me that she's late because she had to finish some stuff up at work. We had a brief conversation that just ended up turning REALLY awkward, because I just couldn't think of anything to say. Not to mention, she had a bunch of friends around, so she tended to talk to them more.

I left, disappointed in myself, and now I'm actually almost too scared to go back. Do you think this will make things awkward forever? Do you think that maybe I can actually make a recovery?

you can only make a recovery if she's actually interested in you to begin with, which i have no way of discerning from the things you've told me. i'll assume she's neutral about you -- neither wildly attracted nor wildly repulsed.

so you didn't make the smoothest impression. it's not great, but it's not the end of the world. if you want to have another go at it, then next time you see her just have your usual chit chat and mention the bar thing in a neutral kind of way. then say something along the lines of (in a playful/sarcastic way) "well it was cool seeing you the other night somewhere other than behind that counter. i have to say, though, it wasn't all that great since i really didn't get to talk to you much. (wait for confirmation smile/laugh) yeah so you want to get a drink some other time when you're not busy?"

no guarantees, right? but i don't think you've lost your chance completely.

edit. i honestly don't think you should care about her image of you. you're a customer and it doesn't matter what she thinks. if she says no or isn't interested you can continue going to the store, as long as you're polite and stuff.

Oh man, Lauren, that is awesome... I'm so going to go with that.

I guess I really have nothing to lose anyway.

Thanks again for the advice. You're really beginning to become one of my favorite posters..

Yeah once in a while we'll all bust up. Happened to me a few weeks when I was talking to some girls I met and when the really hot one came into the group... It was just like I had nothing to talk about.

Needless to say I felt like a loser for about a day after, but lucky for me I have a good recovery from those things and don't dwell for long.

After that I was indifferent to her, and behold! My talking powers came back the next day and she got caught out looking at me.

I was walking to class slowly, being the dude with the cool walk and I was walking towards the building she was upstairs inside already. When I got there her friend and the teacher said she was watching me the whole time.

So I pretty much asked her not to follow me home and so fourth... Rofl I hope this helps/makes sense Gadzooks.
