Prostitutes
I had a discussion about prostitution with my friends today, their opinions were standard: that it's degrading, dirty, and low, plus immoral. So it was three against one, when I was trying to reason with them that there are prostitutes out there who are normal people, not doing it to fund a desperate drug habit, and independent of any pimps. I think it's only degrading if the person doing it thinks so, but I was outnumbered, and eventually told to shut up, because it turned into a rant.
Anyway, instead of putting this in humanities, I wanted to put it here, to ask some things. Firstly, what's your opinion, totse? Secondly, would you pay a prostitute? Thirdly, do you have any experiences you can share?
Sorry if this is boring and overdone.
It's almost time for me to retire to bed, so I'll reply back in the morning.

Re: Prostitutes
Putting a price on sex dehumanizes both parties.
Selling your body is trashy, cheap and low, but aiding someone selling sex is just as bad.
Most of those women have had abuse filled histories and it's just only hurting them worse.
It's degrading because you're dehumanizing all parties invovled, selling something which at least had intimite meaning, and risking your life over making some cash.

Re: Prostitutes
Lol you would think that a slut who fucks you without you even buying her a drink would be considered the most low of the barrell.
I don't think there is anything wrong with prostitution, if they want to sell their bodies for sex, they are one up on the other bitches that just give the shit away.
If you look at it, most guys let's say takes them 3 - 4 months to hit that pussy of your average american girl.
Now let's just say, that you went on 4 dates a month, that is once a week, and this doesn't include gas or ANYTHING. If you are a gentlemen you would pay, so let's just say you average about $50 a meal which is pretty cheap. That's $200 a month, in 3 - 4 months time you have spent $600 - $800 for some pussy.
That is the price of a very high quality hooker, you might of saved yourself the trouble and anguish of a long drawn out relationship that doesn't mean shit, and just pay a whore to fuck you.
They're happy, you are happy until you realize you think you need sex to be happy, and then you go back to the hooker, or the dating game. Make your choice.

Re: Prostitutes
My first real non-imaginary girlfriend was a volunteer at a Women's Refuge. This was back in the 80's.
One of the girls she looked after was a 15 year prostitute who was on the run from her pimp. This girl had literally run away with just the clothes she had on...which wasn't much. She had one single pair of knickers which she washed religiously every night and dried on the radiator.
As it was the Season Of Ringing Cash Tills (aka xmas) my girlfriend took her shopping on the refuge's account so she could get some clothes and 'smellies'. The refuge asked me to accompany them as her ex-pimp was still looking for her etc etc
We ended up in Boots (an English Drug store/chemist). The girl had finished her shopping and while we were their my girlfriend took the opportunity to get some stuff for herself.
Suddenly it occured to me that it was almost her time of the month and I asked her if she had enough tampons(back then shops tended to close over xmas!).
She said she hadn't and while she was choosing some other feminine crap , would i please go and get her a packet of Dr.Whites (which at the time was her preferred brand of plug). I asked her if she wanted 'original' or new smooth 'rounded' tips and then went across the store and found them.
I walked back to the girls with the box in my hand.
The underage prostitute was MORTIFIED...i mean red with embarrassment. She was gob smacked with shock. And stuttered something like 'you let your boyfriend *words failed her* '
Remember this girl had done everything in bed with a man/girls/farmyard animals, by the age of 12, that it is possible to do. And yet the fact i bought my girlfriend some tampax horrified her!
Taught me a valuable lesson about thinking women on the game have no morals or standards.
We are all just making it through the day. Some sell powder, some themselves. Everyone draws the line differently.

Re: Prostitutes
My mother was a prostitute until I was about 14. It's not a nice thing to grow up with.
"So where does your mum work rabbitweed?"
"uh, dunno"
"Oh...I see"
Waking up at 3 in the morning because some guy is yelling her 'working girl' name across the hallway, asking where she is.
It's not fucking right for your very own mother to be a whore. So no, it's not nice, and it's not normal.

Re: Prostitutes
I see no problem with prostitutes. It's their body, and some guys really want to have sex but nobody likes them.
Personally, I would not hire a prostitute because the best feeling of sex comes from knowing that someone else really wants you... not your money.
This reminded me of a song...
quote:
(Cigarette smoke yeah)
The cigarette smoke in your eyes
Watching a stripper and
(Snortin' some coke yeah)
Snortin' some coke off her thighs
Bla-bla-bla-bla-bla-bla...

Not saying you have to be proud of what your mother did, but atleast be respectful that she is doing the only thing that she knew how to do to make money. If she wants to sell her pussy for money, who the fuck are you to stop her?

Re: Prostitutes
its perfectly fine, you see in business, you get what you have little value of, and trade it for something of higher value. Prostitutes believe that thier sex services are not useful to them and are exchanging it for money which they can use.
the customers believe that the sex services offered by the prostitute is worth more than the money. Both parties are happy and have what they want.
however, like all businesses, if there is an employer (pimp) its possible that the workers may be abused, just like in sweatshops etc.

I was jokingly considering this (though it's not actually even possible at the moment), and my friends looked mortified - I was met with a "Enjoy being raped and thrown in the gutter with a needle in your arm" sort of joke reply, but there was a serious opinion behind the whole thing.
I think that it should be done in a proper but fair brothel system where people look out for each other, and it would work if the government followed it more closely rather than turning a blind eye and shoving it out of sight. Good story Jack, with a nice point!
The thing is, I think I have a price in a manner of speaking - that I could be bought. But other people seem so horrified by this idea, and the main reason I'd not go into this work -aside from the risks which could actually be oversome- is because of what potential partners would think of me, if they knew, and I had stopped being a whore to try and settle down or something. There's lots of cultural pressure, preconceptions, and miscoceptions.
When offering a service, it's also not manadory that you provide it, just like a business deal, you can turn it down or meet halfway on your terms. The person isn't buying you, they're buying an experience with you.

Well...I imagine everywhere organized crime tries to get it's fingers in? Yet, I don't imagine your country is without the Escort Agencies & Parlours d'Massage?
The true danger is working on the street.
Though? What of the moral danger? At a regular job? Would a woman who'd done the Thexxth Trade be weirder with the politics that go on in every workplace?
Fuck her boss for a promotion? To fire a rival? To get a friend hired? I wunder?

Re: Prostitutes
Yes, everywhere there are gangs of organized criminals, and big drug things going on, but it is possible to stay out of that. There are tons of agencies here, but I think they take a big cut and some aren't reputable. But if you have your own place, and hopefully someone around about to look out for you, it can be done.
Here, an escort (doesn't always even include sex) can get £50-£60 an hour, and it just seems rather enticing!
Sexual favours for climbing ranks in an office environment is a bit different in my opinion, because it's a closed group of people who know each other, and it's not allowed, either!

Re: Prostitutes
I view prosititution as the most honest relationship between a man and a woman. Man wants sex and woman wants cash. This transaction allows both parties to get what they want up front with no bullshit unlike dating.
The downside is sex is tied to an intense variety of emotions. So does cash. As a women, you probally seen the behaviors that come out of men and women when it comes to a signifigant other or the one they shack up with or want to shack up with. What would you do if a john thinks you are in love with him and starts stalking you and or thinks you stole their cash and all other sorts of issues like that.
The other downside is STD's. For a list of stuff you can pick up click here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexually_transmitted_disease
Alot of it cannot be prevented by a condoms and alot of them by time symptoms appear, its
progessed to an uncurable stage. Some of course have no cure or treatment reguardless what stage you are in. Some may never show symptoms for years and possible for a test not to detect them. This is what will concern future lovers when they find out that you may have done this for a living.
Depending on your looks and the local laws,
it may be safer to pose nude for a local
magizne for a softcore photo (playboy style) or start up your own website to produce photos of your self on the website. Just as little work and just as much money. Plus its legal.
For those who say that it should be legalized, in the US, it will never be because the church and women's special interest groups lobby your politicians to keep it illegal. Any other group who attempts to legalize it would be smeared in the political area as a pervert and other such misconceptions.

Re: Prostitutes
Omicron, I agree with you partially on that.
But having read around, I've found out some things. This is a quote from wikipedia:
"Although prostitutes are not regularly studied as a group by the CDC or other recognized institutions, what little has been done on the subject suggests that female prostitutes have either HIV rates similar to the population or lower. Nevertheless, intravenous drug using prostitutes carry very high rates of HIV relative to the population. Studies on non-intravenous drug using prostitutes are scarce to non-existent."
This is interesting, and makes sense. Prostitutes who don't use needles and who go for regular health checks can get along fine - and in fact, they're more likely to get regular tests than other people, because of the drug risk, so they'd find out quicker if anything was amiss. Some women enjoy the sex AND the cash - I don't know why people seem to find this concept impossible. I heard a story about one German lady who signed herself up to a brothel because her husband failed to satisfy her, but that's by-the-by.
Thanks for everyones views and experiences so far!

Japs are idiots. They've got this cultural thing against condoms (kinda like a taboo, only weaker). And, on average, they've got very little real info about VD's (STI's, whatever). Which is kinda weird for a nation of sexual perverts (they did invent tentacle, bukkake and anal eel porn afterall).

Turning sex into money?
Ridiculous. Absurd. Proposterous! Only a fool would fall for it!
...ah, yes: "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."
They'll never stand for it, someone will speak up, I know they will! Who do they think they are, putting a price tag on basic biology? Who are they to turn emotions into something that can be bought and sold like cakes at a bakery?
Shh, shut up, someone might be listening.
What, well that's the whole point, isn't it? That someone out there is listening? That someone might be taking your words to hear, that you might make a difference? But maybe, just maybe, the only difference you make is to yourself. That's all you need though, since we're all one person...
