I was talking to my friend at work today, and we were trying to decide what makes one slutty.

We came to the conclusion that the number of people you sleep with itself isn't it, but that combined with your reasons for sleeping with said people.

I think you're slutty if you fall under any of these categories:

You're using sex to get somebody to do what you want them to (getting them to date you, buy you stuff, promotion at work, etc.)

You're using sex to get revenge on somebody

You think of it as a trophy, or doing it just to say "I fucked this person"

Opinions on the matter?

i don't really care. not to sound uppity, but i don't have a need to label other girls in that way. if you do any of the above things firekitty mentioned you're just a jackass. but really. it's sex, not some sort of crime. no need for negative labels.

Your first is true. Using sex as a tool is the very definition of slut, whether for pleasure, or power, or money (well, now we have a whore), or whatever.

Eh, i dunno... the idea of a girl who's fucked a lot of guys is kinda a turn off. It's like, much plowed territory.

A long time ago I had a discussion with a group of girls and their consensus was that a girl is a slut if she sleeps with more than three different guys in the course of a week for any reason.

I guess that may be a liberal definition; I don't have any care or use for this context of the word slut, that's simply the definition that I provide to others when they ask about it. To me, I consider the word slutty to be used as a teasing term for a girl you know well who is dressed to kill.

i know what you mean. i guess i separate in my mind wise behaviors from unwise behaviors. but i find it hard to make absolute statements. some things are situational. generally, though, going against your feelings, health, or safety is unwise.

i also think having a strict "definition of a slut" is a way for some girls to rationalize things they do that they're not entirely comfortable with. like, "oh, i'm not a slut because i didn't do X, and X is the main qualifier for being a slut." so that's why this idea seems silly to me. it gives people a false sense of comfort to be able to categorize themselves, definitively, as non-sluts.

When I use the word slut to insult somebody, it usually means "I'm pissed off at this girl, and slut is the only insult I can think of."

Promiscuous behavior doesn't bother me, as long as protection is used, both parties are comfortable with it, and nobody gets more attached than they should.

I don't put much thought into it, but recently one of my friends made a remark to another about how she was becoming slutty... and I thought, if she's considered a slut, why am I not?

Then realized that it's only what I personally am comfortable with that matters.

FK, your reasons are pretty good in my eyes. I don't think the word is a bad way to decribe someone either - the word itself has just been made to sound like a disgusting term by society. Generally it describes a women that goes out and looks for sex - one night stands/booty calls with guys.

Notice that we don't really have a term for a male (although I call males sluts all the time because I don't see why we can't transfer the word to another gender).

My thoughts on what a slut is though is going to be different to the next person, depending on their moral, up bringing and general status in society.

I agree. It's one thing to think about that in terms of oneself, and something else to think about that in terms of someone else. Generally, the word slut is one of the words used to describe a female you don't like.
