Overcoming fear
I've wanted to go to a dance club ever since I started listening to electronic music in the mid-90s. The problem has been that I have a bad case of social phobia. Sometime in the next week or two, I want to go to a club as part of my long term plan to overcome my anxiety.
I'll probably drink some booze to calm my nerves, but what would really help me to do this is if you guys could tell me if there's anything I shouldn't do while I'm there. I'm worried that I'll embarrass myself.

Re: Overcoming fear
If you've been listening since the mid 90's, I'm guessing you're awesomely underground like me, and you'll probably be dissapointed at what they play.
Anyway, name some things you would do, and we'll tell if you if you should or not.
PS maximum respect for actualy doing something about your mental fuckups.

Re: Overcoming fear
I dunno about dance clubs, but fear usually comes before triumph. Depends how good you ignore it.

I would cautiously walk around until I found the bar. I would drink two or three beers while observing the other people in the club. Then... I don't know. I guess it would depend on how good I felt. I would definitely avoid the urge to do the macarena.

Yes, and you owe me $50.

Re: Overcoming fear
Looking in your profile, it doesn't say your location except for 'down there'. Is it Australia?
If so, Melbourne? I'll take you out.
If not...get smashed. Walk up to an Asian dude with fatpants. Pay him for his glow sticks. Buy more alcohol. Look for a podium. Get on said podium. Dance like they do in the Austin Powers movies. Then you should probably drink some more. Drink till you think "Oh fuck...one more drink and I'll puke on the crowd". That's when you know you're going well.
Dance more. Sweating? No? Not dancing hard enough.
Hooking up should be the LAAAAAST thing on your mind (incase you were wondering). Just get smashed and have a good time.
After that....take a walk through the city, find an all night kebab store. buy kebab. Eat kebab.
No better way to beat social anxiety than to talk to randoms. So just talk to random people. DO IT!

Good ideas. Thanks. I would go with you, but I'm in Canada. I wish we had kebab stores here.

Re: Overcoming fear
Dance clubs good! Dance clubs fun!!
Thing is, they're generally so crowded and messy and dark, no one is going to pay much notice to you.
Just go there, have a few over priced drinks, buy some glowsticks, dance for a bit, have fun!
But I do know what you mean. I get fucking terrefied about the thought of going out and generally just do all the glowsticks/drinking/loud music/dancing bit in my own home.
