How important is physical ability?
I have about an 80% chance of having a certain medical condition, meaning I would be unable to lift more than half my own body weight without endangering my life. Unless I can find out for sure that I don't have it, I'm not going to take the chance... so I'm not exactly gonna be your stereotypical Strong Man With Comforting Manly Arms.
My question is: ladies, how important is this to you?
I never really cared before, but now I have a Special Someone to think about too, and I'm feeling horribly inadequate. What do I do when partner dearest needs something moved? How can I be a proper manly man if I'm a weakling?
What girl would put up with that?
She claims she doesn't care... but I still feel a little worthless.

That's a good point. Still, I'd like to be able to pick her up and whisk her around and stuff... but I guess the inability to do that isn't considered a deal-breaker?

Exercise to the point where half your body weight is enough to manage day to day things.
Would that make you feel more secure?

Re: How important is physical ability?
Endurance isn't the problem, just strength. There's no limit to how long I can exercise - just can't lift her up and drop her on my dick or whatever.
Edit: Euda, I was thinking that. The reason I'm not supposed to lift very much is because it apparently puts pressure on my aorta, and because mine's extraordinarily fragile this will cause "aortic dissection." I.e. popped heart. But I was thinking maybe I could exercise enough that most lifting I'll have to do won't a strain at all.
I'm going to see the cardiologist this week... I'll ask him. He might say no to my little plan, though... so I'd still like to know if physical ability or lack thereof is a big deal to most women.

Re: How important is physical ability?
You'll be fine, there are plenty of women out there that don't think twice about that sort of thing.
Sure, you might feel awkward about it; that doesn't me that she finds it awkward. Guys and girls feel awkward about a lot of things for which they have no reason.
I'm guessing that you don't rely on strength for that much in you life, so you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

What is the name of the condition, this kind of sounds like bullshit to me. A condition where you can't lift half your body weight?
What if you weighed 900 lbs.? Does that mean you can now lift 450 lbs. safely without endangering your life?
What the fuck is this based on?

I was wondering that too; however, I'm pretty sure it's just a general guideline - a large (not fat) person will have less difficulty in lifting something than a smaller one, and so would put less strain on his heart. I'm technically not supposed to lift anything, really. The condition is called Marfan's Syndrome (http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4672).
I can assure you it's not bullshit, but I don't know how to prove it to you. I'm embarrassed to post it, actually; I know that next time I get in a flaming match with someone they'll bring it up. "Hey bitch, your weak ass couldn't even lift my dick." Maybe picture of the heart medicine I'm on? Doesn't really matter, I guess... believe me or not.

So you're an alien human hybrid? I see through your guise....
The thing about computer programmers, they usually also got money/smarts to compensate for a lack of physical ability(if we're pretending all programmers are nerd weakling stereotypes).
You've probably got some other attractive qualities to offer, so whatever girl, would no doubt weigh those against your reluctance to move the couch.

Re: How important is physical ability?
I wouldn't worry about it with girls. I don't really lift girls up, and I only lift half my body weight if I'm doing weights. I'm sure you won't have any problems. Really, people can overlook a lot of stupid little things if they care.

It's simply a shallow measuring stick to compare yourself with other males. It allows people to boost their self esteem while ignoring the complete package. You're more than one quality, but you want to have as many in your arsenal as possible....

Well, I like to think I'm extremely intelligent; but as far as I know, that can't compete at all with Mr. Muscles.

TwistedFerret, that seriously sucks.
Don't do anything dumb to endanger yourself over a chick. Although I could see it limiting you sexwise a little bit, they shouldn't have a problem with it. Besides, thanks to the miracle of workout machines that isolate muscles, you could likely get very manly-looking triceps/biceps/forearms without using the chest-area muscles.
Those fingers are well... damn.

Sorry, not in a cruel way, but that made me laugh a lot. I dont think its a huge issue. My girlfriend jumps on me a fair amount, but not in a way that says "This is why I love you". I think if you explained this to any girl she wouldnt be bothered. Any girl worth spending a lot of time with, at least.
Also, and I'm not being stupid here, look for a really tiny girlfriend. I mean, there are tons of girls out there (no paedophile jokes here...) that are like 90lbs.
Or move to the west coast of canada...its ALL asians here, and they have hollow bones or something, because they weigh like 10% less, even for the same body size.
So its heart related? Are there any heart-strengthening excersizes you can do, like, just cardio workouts to try and beef up the ticker?
I bet moving into a new place is really easy for you.

Any way, my girlfriend never cared that I was a weakling. She honestly didn't. But, I was the bitch in the relationship. Then I started lifting weights and working as a labourer, all of a sudden I was double my previous strength and made her feel like a woman. I could throw her around during sex, pin her, what ever. All of a sudden she was waaaaaay more attracted to me. Then she became my bitch.
So, she might still be attracted to you, but she'd be more attracted if you were strong.

Well, he does sell a lot of books & vids? The basic Combat Conditioning book & it's 'Royal Court' of three exercises, eg. Squats, Back Bridge & Hindu Pushups? They give you a real workout.
How may squats can you do before you blow up? Blow up real good?

I swear, you're the only honest poster in this thread. Anyway, no, hasn't really been addressed before. But... I can pin my girl. She's pretty small, and while I'm weak from lack of exercise I'm also fairly large in size. Is it just relative strength that counts, or do I have to get huge biceps and shit?

Re: How important is physical ability?
Do you walk much? Walking, like I did tonight, for a couple of miles? Mostly off sidewalk in the grass is very good excercise. Any slightest roughness/uneveness in your walking surface really works your whole body way more than on the sidewalk.
Sure, 'specially at night, you've got to keep an eye out for trash hazards & holes? In the city it's pretty easy to find grass or graded dirt to walk on that's as safe as the sidewalk...mostly...

I don't walk, but I should. The cardiologist recommended it to, but I didn't know that sidewalks were to be avoided. Dankeschön!
