Adolescence vs. Adulthood
Highschool relationships are infamous for being short, but very passionate, where lust and happiness are shared intimately but rather superficially and never mean very much. The words "I love you" are said meaninglessly, and are tossed around like popcorn in a movie theater.
But let's quickly glance over at supposedly well-developped, married couples. They too say the words "I love you," for example, and frankly, what enables a 50-year-old to be able to say it, and everyone assumes they mean it, whereas a teenage boy can say it and be told that he's just imagining it, or it's a new feeling and can't be love. What makes the passionate, loving infatuation "less real" in a teen than in an adult?
I mean, a married couple says the three words so frequently, I doubt that they mean it every single time. Just a thought.

Absolutely, I'm just saying that the "I love you"'s said by teenagers aren't necessarily any different from those by adults, and shouldn't really be considered differently, other than the fact that perhaps teenage relationships are just a little more unstable than adult relationships.

Oh, okay. I thought so; I was just making sure. That's nice to know, though, yeap.

Duration is probably the metaphorical yardstick most people use.
I know why you made this thread. I hope that my love is genuine no matter the measure used.

Re: Adolescence vs. Adulthood
Once you actually do love your partner, you can say it 1000 times and it'll still be true. As long as you mean it, the words lose no value.

the old ones have experienced the fake love and real love, therefore they know the difference. or something.

Re: Adolescence vs. Adulthood
Many teenagers are blinded by infatuation, or even mistake the difference between that and Love. It is really easy to say 'I love you' with emptiness to it, which is what we mostly see around the 'school yard' etc, which I figure thats why 'I love you' from teenagers is pretty much immediately dismissed.
I think more people should realise the difference between these words. Although, I really want to know what 'love' feels like.

And most never really reach aduldhood, mentally speaking. That pretty much invalidates everything.

I agree with the OP. Love is love and fuck what anyone who 'knows better' thinks.

Re: Adolescence vs. Adulthood
I'm 19/20. Most of my friends range from 22-34.
I'm also very close with my boss, who's a 40 year old woman.
If there's anything I've learned from talking to them/watching them and their friends, it's that no matter how much older you get, the drama never goes away. People don't stop cheating, lieing, using each other, having dramatic love triangles, etc just because they're older.
It's really shocking looking at some of my boss's friend's relationships and thinking "Wow that sounds just like my last relationship."

Oh, no, not at all. It's just, both of us have relationships, and we speak, so we're both weary of what "love" really is.

Similarly, I see people's MSN names, like "Iain <3 Jess 4eva!!", all the time, and then a week later they've broken up.

I quote, here, "5 weeks 2moro Damo huni!! i luv so so much!!! urs 4eva!!".
Five weeks... bah.
EDIT: I forget where all the hearts and xXx's go. I guess I'm paraphrasing. She had the same kinda names with her ex, too.
This is one of the people I've blocked, by the way. Don't judge me too harshly for having 'em on my contact list
I like what lauren said. True love is something you need to experience to know it, anything before that you think is love pales in comparison, the words are cheap until you know what they mean. The older you are, the better the chances you know what you're talking about. A lot of adults still have no idea, mind, and some people in their early teens do. Just generalising.
