Default The Old Git's Guide to Presents For Her.

We seem to get a lot of 'OMG WTf do i get her for her birthday/xmas/anniversary?' threads so:

What NOT to buy her

---------------------------

(this is for the husbands/longterm life partners) Kitchen stuff is NEVER an acceptable gift!

There are two exceptions to this rule: 1, if she is a keen cook and you KNOW she has set her heart on a new set of Global or Wustenhof knives (those are the ones that retail at about a month's salary) or Creuset pans.

Two, if you're buying her a dishwasher. This device is the only acceptable kitchenware gift. It frees up so much time for her that any woman will be pleased to get one.HOWEVER it must be accompanied by a second smaller personal gift. and be plumbed in within one week!

Underwear is normally NOT a suitable gift! The knickers she takes off infront of you are not the ones she wears by choice. Look in any girl's knicker drawer and you will find 3 distinct piles. One for getting laid, one for everyday wear (see Bridget Jones) and a few old ones for her period days.

Most of the underwear you would buy for her is designed for your pleasure, not for her comfort(cheap fake lace REALLY scratches!) and is probably 'anal floss'.

Chocolate is always WRONG!. Thanks to the fem-nazis most women have a totally fucked up self image. Giving her a box of Godiva's best is to condemn her to a week of self doubt and guilt trips. It also shows a horrible lack of originality.

Perfume is an expensive way of telling her that you didn't love her enough to think to of an original gift. It can however form part of a larger gift to fill space in the box, if needs must. The same applies to just handing her an inch of cash and telling her to 'get herself something nice' and to all sparkly, shiny things

-----

So what should you get her? Well iME something that you have made yourself, something you have put some thought and love into is always a winner. Even if she hates it, she will adore the fact you made it for her.

I love chocolates.

But that's more of a random gift that like, a birthday or christmas present.

If it's random, that's like +98324876

It's unoriginal for any gift giving occasion though.

I should have added that fancy knickers, sparkly things etc are ALL good random gifts that will brighten her day (and probably HIS evening) but not as formal presents.

But you forgot to talk about gifts you SHOULD get her.

So here's a quick list, so I can procrastinate a tiny bit (don't put off homework until the day before your professor collects it).

- Jewelry is always nice. However, bling (anything bigger than a fingernail) is unacceptable. Gold that turns her finger green is bad. Actually, gold in general is sort of tacky, unless it's really nice. Fake stones are okay, unless you've been together for more than 2 years. Diamonds aren't necessary, but even a genuine amethyst or opal is better than something fake.

- Some sort of deal at a beauty salon. One that includes a manicure, facial (and not the kind you're thinking, you sick fucks), and perhaps a pedicure. Don't get her a gift card though. It has to be some sort of voucher for a particular thing that you know she'll like.

- Massage oils. And you must use them. And it must last longer than 20 minutes.

- Certain electronics. An iPod with her favorite music already uploaded onto it, maybe?

Two winning suggestions there i think. Especially if he makes the massage oil himself and doesn't automatically assume that the massage will lead to to sex (although it often seems to.)

Mhmm. Massages almost always lead to sex, because you've already got his hands all over you... and they're so intimate... and I could use one right now. Mmm.

Are only suitable when you turn up on a date, as a random sign of your affection or if she is in hospital.

Flowers don't count as a gift.

Flowers mean "I know I fucked up, and I'm too proud to say sorry, but here's my attempt."

Or, if sent to her and not delivered in person "I want everybody to know you're taken."

If like me you fall into the caterogory 'large, hard, ugly alpha male' then a winning suggestion is make her a fluffy teddy/rag doll!

I kid you not! Don't worry...there are kits available.

Trust me, that present pushes all the right buttons and will have her walking around in an 'awww sweet' haze all afternoon.

Put a nice tasteful necklace around it's neck too or stitch a personal message on it and you'll probably get anal sex that night.

edit see Fk's reply below for putting this suggestion into 'Uber' mode.

Oh, the rag doll thing is a sure way to get some good sexing.

Except, go to the Build a Bear place and make her a teddy bear or something, because then she'll know you were actually seen in public making a teddy bear, and appreciate it that much. And the jewelry can even be fake if you put it on a teddy bear you made, as long as it doesn't turn her skin funny colors.

I've always been a fan of a suprise present the day before, just something small and thoughtful. A preview to show that you're thinking about her and not just thinking about what you feel obligated to do.

Sadly, it isn't as much fun when it isn't a surprise.

If she can read, then a book of poetry is nice. It doesn't matter if she likes poetry or not, the idea of getting poetry from a guy simply seems to please a girl.

I have learned this, to my dismay, many times.

I have a quite a bit of womens jewelry, but it's all expensive quality items. I've never known a girl that liked it; sapphires, rubies, diamonds, pearls, gold, silver, platinum, and all kinds of things. If you're going to get jewelry, make sure it's something to her tastes; something that she will wear, and not simply out of obligation.

Some sort of craft, such as a coffee cup seems to be well-received.

A trip somewhere is always an excellent gift.

There are plenty of great gifts to get a girl. Each one of these can be tailored to a person's personality.

Of course. The problem with this kind of thread is that it deals in generalities. But i'm hoping we'll get enough suggestions and input that we can have a good archiveable thread.

The trip suggestion was a good one i think.

Okay, Presents for the guys.

-Electronic gadgetry of ANY kind is great, we love playing with useless shit, will keep us entertained for hours, giving you valuable time to make us food, clean the house, do the laundry, etc, etc,

-Tools, same deal with gadgetry.

-Lingerie, as 'ketch said, it's for us....

-Cooking utensils. I love to cook, and the girl who buys me a new wok burner/wok set, knife set, whatever, will earn my undying love.

-Car accessories. Pimp my ride, babe!

Ok it was slightly tongue-in-cheek but it's also kinda true. Men LOVE sex...or at least the idea of sex. Give him a 'I'll be your sex-slave and do ANYTHING, no matter how dirty, for you for one evening' voucher.

Or if you've already covered all his fantasties then men appreciate tools. For example,if he's a mechanic then sockets and wrenches are always good.

A quick look in his tool box or a glance to see what he's marked in the 'Snap-on' catalogue can pay dividends.

Most men use and need some sort of tools or gadgets. If he's into DIY then things like a 'dremel' are always a winner. If he's into computers then that network cable crimping tool...you get the idea?

One of the best presents i ever got (and i really hate birthday/xmas presents) was a rubber stamp with 'Ex Libris, from the library of *********'on it and an ink pad.

This was back when all my books were in the 'Dead Tree' Format and i spent many many happy hours stamping the inside covers of all my books and writing my name in in long hand.

VERY important point. But in general even the most brand loyal will bloke will appreciate a quality tool of a different brand. Infact i know a lot of guys who have changed 'their brand' after such a gift.

I mean i rate 'Facom' as some of the best tools in the world but even if she bought me a 'MAC' wrench i would love and use it (i find MAC feel 'flimsy'...they aren't but they feel that way).

And having one 'odd'tool gives it character...makes it somehow special.

Believe it or not girls, even if you ditch him and he lives another 80 years, everytime he picks that wrench up he will think of you and smile.

If money is tight then just get him a single socket or spanner for example. To put the gift into 'Uber' mode then have it engraved with something sexy/witty like 'to Fred, so everytime you think of me your nuts go tight'

Well, apparently i came up with the 'best gift ever' (friends told me this, as well as the gf).

I got a picture of us laser-cut into a piece of glass shaped into a heart with "always in my heart" engraved under it.

Anyone else like this one?

For us blokes:

- If he's into computers, get hom some headphones. A man can NEVER have enough headphones.

- DO NOT buy him clothes, unless you know him better than he knows himself. 99.91% of guy's i know detest when people buy them clothes of any kind.

- A favourite movie is always a winner. Especially if its something he hasnt been able to get his hands on previously

(May i reccomend we all put our ages / country of origin / interests under our posts? Just so people dont buy a 15 year old kid a $100 socket wrench that he'll probably use as a hammer)

16, Australia, avid sportsfan and computer gamer.

Ya. I took my girlfriend out to the fair, and we left and went for a walk after it got boring, and there was a bush with really big, nice, white flowers on them. So after we passed the bush and rounded the corner, i just said 'oh shit, hold on a sec, ill be right back, stay here', and ran back and got one flower for her, and she nearly orgasmed..

spontenaity (sp?) is the key, i think, just a little present every once in a while to remind her.

I've been thinking about a pair of shoes as a present for a lady friend, how would that go down if I get a pair she'd like?

And I agree 100% on the tools. I don't do a huge amount of work with tools outside of computers, but a PC tool kit, or even socket wrench/hammer/hatchet would be amazing. As to the guy that said a man can never have enough headphones... I have actualy multipile pairs of high end ones, along with some low end, and medium ones, even though I'm not a huge audio buff, so... QFT!

I find (and this applies to anyone, not just that special someone) that a big, expensive gift will always take second place to something small and really thoughtful. Pay attention to what they say, and make mental notes of things they like or want. A generic gift like a costly ring says "I have a lot of money, and you're worth the money", which is very nice, but something meaningful says "I listen to you", which is appreciated more. At least, it is in my experience. Although if the thoughtful thing is expensive too, by all means go for that!

A few examples from my experience would be an ex-girlfriend, who happened once to say "I really like stuff by x brand, but I've never seen it on sale here". Four months later, I gave her a little keyring from the company. Even though I had to order overseas, it hardly cost anything, but she was amazed I'd remembered and I got a lot of "thank you" sex, as well as that nice feeling you get when you give a well-received gift. I got her a pendant with a design she'd showed me once, because I saw it in a shop. Again, this was months later (and it coincided with her birthday, which was perfect), and I just thought "hey, that's that thing she thought was awesome all that time ago". Again, very well-received. And I got my best friend a packet of Jelly Tots and sent them to her for no particular occasion. She's kept them unopened in her room ever since

The same thing applies to guys, by the way. I got a little cross necklace for my birthday from someone who I'd once mentioned to that I really liked the cross on jewellery (I'm not Christian, it just appeals aesthetically), and bemoaned the fact that I couldn't find a nice, solid-feeling but small one. And from that vague description, they got me an absolutely perfect one. I was, needless to say, rather touched.

EDIT: Even if it's something they don't like, if they remember mentioning it, they'll still be really touched. It's what I always try to do when I buy gifts.

Not only that, but if you let a good amount of time pass between window shopping and picking that up for her, it leaves a woman [or man] with that nice feeling of "He/she remembered".

That's always very nice to know someone is attentive to such things.

I'd love one of those cool old whiskey flasks.

Make sure your guy drinks though, or he may not see what is so cool about it.

Hmmm....never really had anyone else who appeared to care about that. Naked yes, comando yes, but panties....Not really.

Hmmm....maybe it's got to do with an interest in hardwares vs softwares?

No, that means you have a good girlfriend who doesn't say "Something I'll like."

And, ps, books are always a good gift.

Books are a good gift for men too, just make sure you get something useful or at least enjoyable.

e.g. The Zombie Survival guide - useful AND enjoyable.

I guess this was just a list for females as in from the perspective of someone dating a female?

I'm not keen on perfume as it's ridiculously expensive.Chocolate..meh, I can allways give it to the fat people at work. Knives....allways welcome.

But then, I'd be happy with anything if it meant that someone had thought of me as in 'oh. her. I remember her. Better buy her something.'

I've always found great success with random "I'll do whatever you want to do today with you, and I'll make great conversation throughout' style gifts. Not for special occasions though.

I'm a guy, and all the best gifts I've had have been books (I really like books.) There is one other gift that springs to mind, that I got from an ex. It's a melted wine bottle with the entirety of 'As the Mist Leaves no Scar' by Leonard Cohen engraved on it. I thought that was absolutely excellent.

Other than that, if a girl got me something useful related to one of my hobbies I'd be very excited; Any sort of cool Guitar stuff like a really nice strap or a bottleneck slide with something engraved on it or a book of Django Reinhardt music. Also, if I got something poker related like a quality chip set or a table from a girl, I think I'd be buying an engagement ring the next day.

I've never liked buying formal gifts; I tend to make things, or, and I know this sounds very, very cliched, write things. I think it is the effort that goes down well. I wrote a girlfriend a really very good and very personal sonnet for valentine's day one year, and she cooked me a meal. I don't think either of us could have been happier.

Impromptu gestures always seem to go down well. Like, if your girls coming over to yours and she's been at work all day and you know she'll be tired, have a warm bath waiting for her. That sort of thing.

Believe it or not the best present Ive ever recieved, was coming home from work, thinking I was the only one home

(seeing as my mum had left state and my sister was at her mates.)

And I open my doors to see an elegantly written note, with her scent (my Girlfriend)

It tells me to take my boots off and go take a shower...I go to the bathroom, and to my surprise shes standing there in a silk robe, candles burning, with the bubble bath ran. She takes of my clothes, and we have a very relaxing bath... t'was wonderful.

One gift that seems to be popular with the girls Ive given gifts to, is a Nicely written letter (with serious thought put into it) and a nice piece of jewelry such as a small diamond pendant.

because in all honesty a thoughtfully written letter says more than any material object could.

ah, i'm pretty damn sure I'd take a bath just about anytime with anyone right about now.

perhaps it's because i'm trapped in this prison they call a dormatory now and have been deprived from my weekly bath for 2.5 months now. I'm sick of hauling all my shit to the shower everyday and being hurried by the asswipe waiting in line behind me because he can't wake up before 8am.

this thread got me thinking.

what does a gift show? it's an interesting clue into how the other person thinks of you, or at least what they were thinking when they bought the present. all the posts allude to this in some way.

i think the reason it's often hard to express yourself in a gift is because of the confusion in our [weird, screwed up] consumer culture between spending money/buying things and demonstrating feeling. obviously a gift is going to be hard to express yourself through - its essentially an unnecessary, extraneous object, even if it's a beautiful diamond ring.

i never know what to ask for on birthdays or holidays. i guess what pleases me (personally) is taking me somewhere and doing something with me. a trip would be awesome, but not everyone has that money. a show, a restaurant, an event. a memory. a letter expressing positive feelings. a poem. a drawing. a slice of your heart.

flowers, jewelry, chocolates, whatever, would all make me extremely happy regardless of what they were. i don't think the object itself would mean much. it would just be act of giving it. like mr. happy's example, jelly beans or whatever they were can be even more precious than a gold necklace.

gifts should show that your thinking about the person, espesialy when your in a relationship with them. so it should be something that they would like. personaly im a diy guy so a good gift for me would be tools or such, but if you really know me you would know that i love minature things. like i saw at a second hand store a bunch of miniture olier cans (about 4in tall) but i never went back there to get it or in pottery class i made myself litle vases and bowls.

oh and i collect keychains (have bout 200) so they would be a good gift for me.

ok done, but please excuse spelling errors

Ugh, sex would be a horrible present.

This is a great thread though, gave me some original ideas of my own.

Personally I fucking LOVE getting good music, whether it be on a CD, a tape, 7", 12", what-the-fuck-ever dude. Or a band's shirt, or patch, or even a fucking pin will get me going, "w00t!"

A bong is always nice too...

Drugs are for the fucking win, but not on their own, heh. That's just cheap/asshole type shit. Use it to compliment the occasion...

Anything related to a particular interest is always great. My ex always gave me the best presents: a book of art by Salvador Dali(and two posters!), an MSI shirt, an old record turned into a clock that has the circle-A spraypainted over an american flag...Oh, and she got me a really nice Bible when I turned Christian. All that shit made me HAPPY.

Stuff to make her feel good and sexy I considered being a good choice.

Stuff for the bathroom and bedroom FTW.

Oh and it seems to me that females love to entertain and have people over, so a nice dinner set, outdoor furniture or indoor furniture or pieces (art or something) to have as a point of conversation I consider a good option...Only if you live together I suppose or she has her own place and making sure you know her tastes in those sorts of things.

As for guys I know personally I like practical gifts...stuff I'll appreciate, use and think is practical.

This is me happy with a gift from someone special

- Magazine subscription to something I read (I'll never miss out on an issue and it comes straight to the door)

- Gift Certificate at a store I frequent (Because I'm the type of person that'll say 'you shouldn't have', I still get something and if I didn't really need something there and then it will provide me with something I might need or want in the future)

- Photo session of the pair of us (I dunno why, I'd like this form someone special...something to frame and have at work to remind me how lucky I am)

- Something that will produce good memories (Dinner and show somewhere...though the show would have to be something we both enjoy so I wouldn't be 'you really don't want to be here')

- Anything made by her, like for example a photo frame made by her, or modified by her with something like seashells she collected herself.

Ahhh

*Secretly hopes any future partner of mine reads this and makes a mental note*

My ex got me a teddy made at the aforementioned 'build a teddy' place. Except, because I used to call her my retarded little monkey (yes, we had screwy pet names, we weren't normal), the thing she got me was a monkey. And it became know as Shelley Monkey. Shelley being her name.

As for stuff I got her... I got her a lot of that random stuff you get a girlfriend. I took her in once and got her fitted with a white gold diamond ring. That was cool. A lot of books that influenced me throughout my lifetime (I mean, she hadn't read Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy). Hmm... actually, I could have given her anything, and she would have loved it, probably because during the whole time we were going out, I didn't get her much stuff.

Shit, just realised that she probably got me less. She didn't contribute anything to my toolbox, except to say random stuff while I was fixing my bike or whatever.

I'm probably not your typical girl but this is what I would like to recieve...

Books.... lots of books; art, poetry, ancient and classical history, and religion.

Artwork.... a nice framed print... although that would be tricky I'm very picky with my art

Anything Smiths related... a Morrissey autograph would be the best present ever.... of course you can change the autograph depending on who your girlfriend is into

A big knife or sword.... not a kitchen knife.... something made with the sole purpose of killing people that I can put on my wall

A Tattoo voucher.... lots of people have given me tattoo vouchers and they are the best presents ever because a tattoo is something I'm never ever going to loose and everytime I look at it I'll think of you.

Alternatively a piercing voucher because then at least if you break up she can let it heal over and not have to remember you lol.

A Cd of a band I'm into.... although maybe thats not very romantic thats more of a friendly gift I guess unless it's really really difficult to find and she's been looking for it for ages so it shows you went to some effort

Jewelry but nothing crappy.

Accesories.... you just can't buy a girl clothes because even if you know what size she is every shop seems to vary on sizes and all girls are different shapes so we need to try things on and shit but accesories like a nice belt or handbag usually go down very well with me.... as long as you have taste

A Zippo... a nice zippo lighter engraved with something funny not something all cheesy and disgusting. (also whoever said about having that picture etched into glass in a heart shape bleurgh how wet is that!!!?)

Gadgets.... they're not just for boys.

Stuff for my car.... yet again not just for boys

And finally anything she has hinted it.... we hint at things we want all the friggin time we're just subtle... so learn to pick up on hints a bit better and you wont have a problem.
