Thats like asking why guys go for attractive women.

Both athleticism and popularity happen to be highly attractive traits.

Instinct. Someone who is fit and well-liked was probably more likely to survive in times of old. Couple this with pop-culture and there you have it. Sorry bud.

Ahem. I'm a girl and I'm the exact opposite. I find athletic/popular males VERY UNAPPEALING.

I like flaws. If someone has slightly crooked teeth, or messy hair, a funny nose or something odd about them, I will be facinated and there is the attraction.

For the same reason guys get with hot girls. Problem is guys get the shitty end of the deal because there's more of a chance an ugly woman will have sexual intercourse with a handsome guy than there is of vice-versa.

Guys have lower standards in terms of looks BY FAR too. Women are far more obsessed with looks, money, and popularity than guys are.

It's hard to find a girl with the intelligence, interests, etc of a guy so guys will look at this as very important a lot of the time.

if you are athletic, you are more sexually appealing. if you are popular, that usually means you are outgoing and can talk to others easily
