Default Debate... or.... Argument

For some very strange reason I have such trouble distinguishing the difference. Obviously, you would know from school, that a debate usually includes something to do with the society.

But even though, I think that debates in relationships are different.

ASIDE from that, I find that arguments can also be on political views and what-not. My girlfriend and I were talking about culture. Music whatever. She made a point, but I disagreed. She said she finds the cyber-goth trend unique. Where as I disagreed, since I find cyber-goths very fucking retarded (obviously I chose my words wiser, but is what I was thinking. Obviously I chose my words carefuly to not offend her too much).

And later on after all that was done with; I could not tell weather that was an argument or a debate?

Debate: Two people both consulting over a public matter where both of the people have their point of views.

Argument: Two people consulting over any matter with both having point of views.

So technically speaking a debate can turn into an argument, and vire versa. Correct?

So what I'm here for is correction, or re-insurence; because I am really have a hard time...

I see it this way; An argument includes a more harsh debate, like a debate, but where the point of views might be more personal, so each opinion stated might be offensive to the other. A debate is where the point of views are so inpersonal, that they do not matter and will not anger, or emotionaly affect the opisite person.

Now is this correct? Or am I still going wrong about this? Because I was up quiet a bit yesterday trying to figure out weather what I had with my girlfriend was a debate or an arguement.

Debate: Your girlfriend wins.

Argument: No one wins.

(It's called a Break Up when you win).

I'd say it has less to do with the subject matter and more to do with the methodology. A debate would be more formal--each person is given a chance to speak without inturruption, and points are respectfully and intelligently discussed and (potentially) refuted. This is not to say that a debate could not get heated, or that an argument could not be intelligent, but in a debate there must always be a certain degree of respect for the opponent, and a willingness to listen.

If something is important to her and you're arguing that it doesn't matter and is foolish, then you're arguing.

Debate: Purely Intellectual.

Argument: a clash of beliefs (of the heart).

Former's mind, latter's heart. Simple.

That's exactly what I was going to say, except you phrased it better. Darn.

And DirtyBlanket, I had the exact same argument with my ex-girlfriend once. Cyber-goth, lol. Ya right.

I think it's more the difference between agressive and an assertive then debate and arguement.

Agressive is when you force your side on the other person, and assertive is when you take their side into consideration when making your arguement.
