You have a job, yes? Tell him you're broke right now but that he shouldn't expect you to do it continuously...you just don't have the bank at the moment. Honesty, no matter how easy a lie might seem, is ALWAYS the better way.

If he can't pay for you ONE time, then he's a stingy prick...and if he's tight on cash too, maybe you two could just get coffees instead of dinner?
