Just be honest bro, you dont have to worry about sounding desperate. If she's asking, she's asking for a reason.

I'd just shrug a little and be like 'I've always liked you, whats your point?'

Oh shit man...just a future tip: NEVER ask a woman just 'why?' even if it follows a thread of thought/conversation that should make it narrow and easy to answer. You should have been like, "Why? Do you want to hook up with me?"

Atleast if she says 'I don't know' to a yes/no like that, you know she probably means yes.
