Marriage & Last Names
1) Has anyone here ever heard of a man taking on his wife's last name after marriage?
2) When you're in a relationship (but not married, obviously), do you ever "try on" the name change in your mind to see if it fits?
What I mean by the second question, in most cases, is say if you're a guy, you think of your girlfriend with your last name, and if you're a girl, you think of yourself with your boyfriends last name...
I only did that with my last girlfriend, just cuz I was bored one day, not because I had any desire to get married within the next 30 years or anything.

Re: Marriage & Last Names
my boyfriend's last name sounds kind of good with my first name for some reason, i think cause the first syllables rhyme. or something. i don't know, i'm an idiot, but it sounds good.
i would probably take the guy's last name because my last name is so long and yet so boring. i don't understand feminists who are like "gaaaahhh you are giving him power by accepting his name." suck it up bitch, you're only giving him power if you let him punch you in the face. the last name isn't going to take away your girly rights.

Re: Marriage & Last Names
In many european countries newly weds have a choice. They can each keep their own names, use a combination (ie hyphenated) or take their partners surname.
It is no longer automatic that the wife takes her husband's name.

Re: Marriage & Last Names
I'd take their last name, but only if they had the same last initial as me.
I like my initials. JD. Or JAD, but that's not as good. My dad is JD, and so is Johnny Depp.
... that was pointless

Kind of. I'm ashamed of my father, so I wont take my current last name into marriage.
I'm ashamed of my mother's family, so I wont take that either.
So it looks like I'm taking my wife's name. Haha, me and marriage, what a joke.

That's the thing, I won't take my mothers or fathers (both their families are fuckups), but I'm far too much of a chauvanist to take my hypothetical wifes last name.

Re: Marriage & Last Names
There is no way in hell that I'm giving up my surname. I really don't care what she does with hers, but my name will stay. And while I'm at it, it will also be my kids surname.
And yes, I have tacked my surname on to hers, just to see how it would sound.
Oh, I just realised why I wouldn't give up my surname, it's because it's what everyone calls me. A lot of people I hang out with don't even know my first name.

Re: Marriage & Last Names
I changed my name when I got married...Mainly for convenience sake, to be honest. People ASSUME that a married woman has the same name as her husband, so it would be kind of a hassle to always be explaining that you kept your maiden name. Also, I hate my parents and I wanted to erase all vestiges of my former life.:/
My sister kept her maiden name when she got married.

I dont know, I'm not real fond of my last name it's quite long and you always have to spell it out for people, it's not something that you could just say and they write it down... Have to spell it every time!
Plus it's real English/European

Re: Marriage & Last Names
Yea. I've been married three times and so I've had four last names and I've kept the best sounding one. My current boyfriend, though, has a really cool last name. I doubt we'll ever get married, but I'd take his last name for sure.
Cheers,
Lost

Re: Marriage & Last Names
I have a double barrelled name, because my parents weren't married and seemed to decide to give me pretty much every name they could think of.
I keep meaning to officially lose the second part, as it's completely irrelevant because it's the name of my father's mother by adoption. And it just makes me look ponsy.
I can't see myself wanting to get married, but I think if I did I would definitely consider keeping my maiden name. It's part of me which I'm not particularly keen to give up.

Re: Marriage & Last Names
I have a last name that just sounds good with a lot of other names. I've had previous girlfriends tell me that they'd rather take my name just because it sounds good.
Sounds lame, but people compliment me on my name all the time.

Re: Marriage & Last Names
Personally, I'm keeping mine, too unique/personal to give up, and I'm not gonna kill something that's about 700 years (european name) old :\
Personally, I haven't tried tacking my last name on any of my gf's, but both of them (one an ex, duh) have.
Ex actually changed her msn password to her last first name and my last name :\ but she was crazy.
Gf now has, in a small conversation about middle names (and my lack of one) tacked my last name to her first, and vice versa, but it's all jokingly and whatnot. I think most girls do that with someone they're in a decently serious relationship with.

Re: Marriage & Last Names
If I were a girl I'd want to keep my last name, and I would half-expect someone I married to want to keep theirs, too. I wouldn't encourage them to make one decision or the other, but I'd probably respect their decision to keep their own last name a little bit more for some reason. Then if we had kids they could have a hyphenated last name or we could mash the two together in some way.

Exactly the same here. My friends will go "wtf" whenever they hear my mother or someone call me by my first name, because it's now automatic to refer to me by surname. Plus, my last name sounds really cool.

Re: Marriage & Last Names
I wouldn't give my last name unless she was sure she wanted it. If she wanted the same last name as me, I'd probably switch to my middle name.
No, I've never tried on a girl's last name. If she had a really funky last name, I might consider it.

Re: Marriage & Last Names
rabbitweed, why don't you just change your name to whatever you want? I don't know about NZ, but here it only cost $150 to change your name legally.
I always think about my future last name. If I marry my boyfriend, my name'll be Chelsea Leach and I think that sounds pretty good, with the repitition of the 'ch' sound.

well, I was thinking of changing my name to "Franz Jericho", as I think that combination sounds awesome, but considering my current name is first name Lewis, that will probably confuse people. And me.
It's not the money involved in changing my name, it's what to change it to. I don't want to just steal someone elses family name. But I don't want to have a really weird last name. I have very little idea what basis to choose a last name on. I just know I want a new one.

Re: Marriage & Last Names
Just choose a last name that you've always liked. Or pick something that starts with an L, because names like that always sound good. I knew a guy in highschool named Lukas Lattis, and I always thought it was a nice name.

Re: Marriage & Last Names
I'd either take my husbands,or if was too common a name,i'd change it with my own splurged in there somehow.I like being different,I got this really americanized guido name that means absolutely nothing at all in italian.Like Haagen Dazs is to polish is my last name to anything, basically. But I like it,it's catchy in it's own sweet way without being too obvious
The only & main reason why it's like that is because my Grandma didn't like the way my Grandpa's last name sounded,it was too old-world for her.So she changed it herself,& some of the others on his side of the family ironically followed suit.
