How long can a person last without any sort of affection?
I'm pretty distant from everyone. Never had a girlfriend, haven't tried, don't know if I want to try. I go through most days being essentially alone, sometimes having short, several word conversations with the people I kinda know.
In high school, this bothered me immensely. I felt like I was abnormal- inadequate. I had expectations about how high school should be, what life for someone my age should be like, and those expectations weren't met in the least. There was a lot of mental pain involved. You may remember some of my earlier melodramatic threads.
But the thing is, I've gotten over what I see as the primary cause of those feelings. I've completely changed my self perception, and now, while externally everything is essentially similar, I feel at peace with myself. I feel just great. My current state of affairs doesn't bother me.
What I'm wondering is this: can I expect it to last? Will some sort of deep emotinal pain set in, given more time being distant from everyone around me? If so, how long? One year? Five?

You feel at peace with yourself? I guess it's cool then. I think you may gain alot of confidence through your independance and you don't have to fuck around with people who aren't worth the bother. But then we all need friends to share our lives with.

Re: How long can a person last without any sort of affection?
The rule of threes.
A person can survive for:
Three minutes without air.
Three hours without shelter.
Three days without water.
Three weeks without food.
Three months without love.

That is overall a fallacy.

Three hours without shelter? So, if you spend more than three hours outdoors you die? Shit.

I concur.
Also, to the OP, remember that there are monks and hermits and others that live their whole loves essentially without meaningful human contact. They often find inner peace through religion, which in the end, inner peace is all you really need.

hahaha guess the OP is lucky then!
OP: It won't change itself, If you find it a problem, you have to change yourself, because you want to.
Start simple, go to barnes and nobles or something, atleast you're getting out, make a few comments to people about books they're looking at, it's small harmless conversation.

It's an excerpt from a survival guide. The shelter one applies to extreme conditions.

People up in the northern mines and work camps go crazy after roughly a month.

I reckon I could manage three months without human contact. It would be interesting to try anyway.

Re: How long can a person last without any sort of affection?
See I would say a couple months without human contact would drive me insane but as I was thinking about it most of the stress in my life comes from other people. So I don't know really. But whatever makes you happy man.

What northern mines? In which country? That is a bit vague.

What does the love part apply to in a survival situation?

Re: How long can a person last without any sort of affection?
I think one can survive without, or even wanting sex and affection. For me it's easy to get by without having a person to love just as long as other aspects in my life goes well.
But i find that i can't get along alone after i get a taste of love. The more i get, the more I want. So i go a couple of months feeling great to be alone , and another couple of months feeling lonely (i feel lonely when i have a girlfriend and i dont get to see her all the time.

all wrong(fallacy)
its more like 5 minuites without air
the three hours without shelter depends entirely on the conditions but as someone who quite regularly sleeps in the street i can tell you its more then three hours on the weekend i spent all night out in heavy rain at cold tempretures with little shelter in a shirt and i survived
i have little idea about the water one
for food its longer if you dont do much
the last one isnt 3 months its indefinite youre thinking of how long the mind can survive for not the body on this one and it depends entirely on the person

It means that if you're kept isolated for too long, you start to fall apart mentally.
And Baz, did you just absolutely feel the need to correct me for the sake of correcting me? Those are rough estimates, and fairly accurate to boot. You think you could go 5 minutes without air? Maybe. Maybe not. But it all depends on your lungs. I'm sure there are heavy smokers that couldnt go 2 minutes without air. They're just a general guide.
And I assume the shelter part wasnt talking about sleeping on the streets. It's more like freezing mountains/midday desert.

Well what about people who shun human contact, but who welcome animal companionship?
