Default So I went to this party...

With my husband and It was like the worst party EVER! First of all there were like TEN screaming kids all over and these children were completely unsupervised! Like they kept going to the playground ALONE and then my daughter would want to go, so I would have to go with her and it was very apparant to me that the other parents thought I was completely overprotective for doing that. Then all of the kids would go play in the house alone and...I'm just not comfortable with my daughter playing alone in a strange house while I am outside! And the other parents kept saying, "It's okay, just let her go alone" and I was getting REALLY uncomfortable because of their badgering. Then there was this baby who was maybe...a MONTH old, judging by his size and he was just lying there unattended! I mean his mother was off somewhere and he was just on the ground crying and no one was doing anything so I picked him up and held him for a long time before one of his parents finally came to get him! Who leaves a baby alone like that?

So anyway, after about an hour I wanted to get the hell out of there, but my husband wanted to stay. He thought I was just being antisocial and that it would be rude to leave so soon.

I guess my question is, was it rude for us to leave so early, or was it justified given the crazy goings on at the party?

All of your actions were perfectly justified, you didn't feel comfortable leaving your daughter to play along with strangers, for obvious reasons and you've judged how the other 'parents' have taken care of that baby.

So, I think you had logical reasoning to want to leave so early.

Justified.

It seems that people in the modern day arent having kids because they want kids, they're just having kids for the sake of it. Dont care about their safety or anything.

You did the right thing.

I was watching TV the other night, here in Australia you get quite a substantial amount of money when you birth a child; this money is intended for the child but some mothers have abused this and are just getting themselves pregnant for the money.

But, yeah.... I can understand why you wanted to leave.

I've noticed this problem too, parents dropping their responsibility very fast at a party or anything like that and hoping the kids watch themselves. Then shit goes down and they act surprised that the kid is missing a finger. I have no idea how to deal with it, scolding them sure doesnt work, they'll just drink more.

I don't know why people here in the US have kids they don't want...Believe me there's no money in it for them!

Jeez, I can understand how you felt. I almost feel disappointed in your husband for not understanding.

Honestly now, if your SO feels strongly about something, whether you fully understand it or not, you should see they feel that way and help them out.

Parenting has been going so terribly down hill now a days.

It's bad enough that parents think they're responsible enough to have children, only to let day care employees and nani's do the actual raising of their children.

I think you were justified in leaving. It'd be one thing to let the kids go off by themselves if they were a bit older, but I'm assuming they're mostly around your daughter's age, which is no good. And leaving a baby unattended like that is just unacceptable.

what i dont understand is why didnt any of the parents...especially the ones with the young baby...get babysitters while they went out and partied? Or lock all the kids in some "playroom" (uncle merv's old room) in the basement like most partys?

I think protecting your daughter at the age i assume shes at is a good idea, but when she's older you should let her become independant. It'll be different for all kids though, they all mature differently. How old is she?

Parenting styles vary.

If you didn't feel comfortable, then there was no reason to stay.

She just turned five in July. And believe me it's very hard to get a sitter...At least where I live and anyway, it wasn't like a frat party or something. The people giving the party have two kids of their own, so things couldn't get too wild.:P

Although, my husband told me later(He walked back after we put our daughter to bed) that a few of the couples with kids had gotten pretty plastered.:/

Many kids are more than a little independent, even by the age of five.

There is no sound way for you to pass judgement on these people.

If the kids were fine and had a good time, then there is no issue besides your being uncomfortable.

Edit: Ignore me, I'm in a foul humour. My apologies.

Well there was this one autistic kid who kept kicking all of the other kids.(seriously)

And then one girl fell down at the playground and got hurt...Or at least she was screaming like crazy.

Also, the autistic kid had a thing with fire and he kept getting all up on these candles that were for some reason burning all over the place.

And I'm in a bad mood too, so don't worry about it!

I'm ill-humoured too! (eldest hasn't taken the trash out or done the other things i asked him to do).

Xiao, it does sound like you were being a bit over-protective about your daughter playing in the house. However that's a judgement call only you could make, so maybe it was right.

However i find your annoyance at the baby's parents totally justified. There can no excuse for their behaviour.

Sodomize all those parents. Then, when they're old enough, sodomize all those kids too!

This is of course the basic platform of 'The Sweet Bugger All Party'!

'Sweet Bugger All in 2008' What's more friendly, more egalitarian than this?

You had everyright to leave as soon as you felt uncomfortable but you do seem to be taking it a little bit far. I'm sure your daughter plays on the jungle gym alone at resess and survives.

You seem suprised? Kids tend to do that... they aren't that bright, but are solid little buggers.

I wouldn't be so sure of that... I know my school only had 3 people watching all the kids at recess.

What a bunch of trashy parents! I don't know how a mother could even bear to leave a month-old unattended. Wow! That's really something.

Let them suffer I say. Those dastardly yanks could do with learing a little bit about the real world... or at least... attempting to learn.

If you are continually asking stoners on an internet email board if you are overprotective maybe you are?

Of course abandoning a month old baby is odd behaviour.

Damn...by the time I was 5 years old my parents were comfortable letting me wander into the woods to start fires and build forts.
