Breaking awkward silences
You know those situations where your talking to a girl (or guy) and all of a sudden conversation will just stop, like you can't think of anything more to say? What do you guys say in a situation like that? Joke, questions, etc.... It seems like sometimes, depending on the persons attitude or personality, I can just go on talking for hours without a problem but with some people.... conversation just freezes.....
Any of you have this same experience? What do you usually do about it?

I would imagine the forthcoming 'No.' would be a lot more awkward then any silence.

Start counting out loud. When she asks why you're counting, tell her you're timing the length of the awkward silence.

Make a funny face/stick out your tongue. If she doesn't laugh, then she isn't worth your time.

Re: Breaking awkward silences
If I ever have an awkward silence with someone I usually totally lose interest in them.
The best way to break a silence is to say, "well, I'm gonna go now."

Re: Breaking awkward silences
Well, dont ask a "deep" or affectionate question in a situation like that if your trying to get a date with her. Most of the time it will just turn out to be more awkward and weird. Try directing her/your attention towards something else when this happens.
For example, if you find yourself in an awkward silence then start talking to somebody else and get her to join in the conversation.
Not talking enough is better than talking too much and not letting her get a word in right?

Re: Breaking awkward silences
actually IMO the best way to break an awkward silence is to comment on the silence.
jsut say something along the lines of "don't you hate it when that happens"
and "how d'you usually break the silence, you find it as hard as me?" and that should boost the convo again

Re: Breaking awkward silences
Appreciate the silence. That's what I do.
If i'm out of things to say, i'll just sit back and look at the girl. 1 of two responces, they either smile and kinda say ..'what' which is the worst one. You can say whatever to it.
2nd is they don't say anything and they look back at you, at this point i'll raise an eye brow. Heh... Then well you're communicating on a more intimate level.

Re: Breaking awkward silences
Ehh. Depends.
Commont as the silence(as mentioned). Cliche, but it works.
Perhaps- "you should talk more, you have a (nice, pretty, beautiful, warm, whatever adjective fits) voice with a lot to say"
Something like that. It needs personalization for fitting, but can be good. Then ask her for a story or some EXACT information.
General questions will be your doom. Seriously. I'm willing to bet the skin on my ass: If you ask a female some general question, it'll be met with "I don't know" no matter how much she likes you.

Re: Breaking awkward silences
Just think of something interesting. I may not be very good in other social area, but I never suffer from awkward silences any more (probably because they used to be so common ). I mean, it doesn't even have to be related to what went on before; just think of something funny that happened to you, or some big event coming up, or your plans for tomorrow, etc. etc. etc. Almost anything will work, but the best things are those that enable her to comment on them and the conversation to branch out.

Here's what you do:
Attack the arkward silence's weak point for MASSIVE DAMAGE. This breaks the arkward silence without the risk of a concentration check.
And with that, I reaffirm to everyone here that I need to get laid.

Re: Breaking awkward silences
I don't let awkward silences happen. Sometimes..you have to realize sitting in silence is the best conversation.. If you aren't awkward, she wont be.
Whatever you do.. don't try to break the awkward silence with something about the weather, her family, or asking her questions about herself.
If it DOES get awkward, let it be silent for a moment, and find something funny about something around you, and comment on it.. as if the silence had never happened.

Re: Breaking awkward silences
I believe in comfortable silences. I don't get awkawrd. But I know when other people feel awkward. That's when I say shit like "Stay here, I'm going to go over there". Then I just walk away.
But yeah, you know shit's good with some one when you don't have awkward silences. Talking for the sake of talking is fucking annoying. Have something to say, or die.

Re: Breaking awkward silences
If things are genuinely awkward and I can't have a convo with someone then I generally just leave or let it die and move-on.
It's different although when you can tell the other person and yourself are really trying to make conversation, obviously theres something there if both parties are trying - normally in that situation I would say something stupid and try to get them to play something dumb like the question game lol.

Oh, I just thought of something: Fart loudly.
I like to announce I'm going to fart, like it's something special or extravegent.
*in a paniced tone* "Oh my god!"
"what?"
"I'm going to fart!"
*closes one eye, sticks toung out...everything goes quiet*
*farts*

Re: Breaking awkward silences
I'm just honest about it:
"So, I like you, and for some reason I'm trying to pick out just the right topic to spark your interest and keep conversation flowing to get to know you better, but I can't think of a damned thing right now...you want to just make out and talk later?"
^
often leads to conversation and sex.

I usually just say "well... this is awkward." And then we talk about how awkward the awkward silence was, and it's alllll better. I tend to like silence though, and if I don't find it uncomfortable and someone says something I just tell them to shut up and enjoy the moment.

hahaha that's pretty much what I do.
Had a date this weekend with a guy, and during dinner there were a few awkward silences. I just made pouty faces, raised my eyebrow, smiled at him, stuck my tongue out.
We're going out again this saterday haha.
