Default Social Interaction

So I've been becoming depressed lately, and people have noticed that I'm never around. At boarding school, 'not being around' is rare when there are only 300 people in the whole school. But the thing is, I just don't go to meals (at a dining hall, breakfast lunch and dinner), don't hang out because I don't like social interaction. People are acting fake, and it bothers me. Most of the time no one talks about anything, they just talk, and it's fucking boring. And when I'm in the dining hall, I get really anxious/nerveous. I feel people look at me and I think they're making fun of me..But I know that I'm just being strange.

So question, wtf do I do? I don't find social interaction interesting, and it makes me anxious as hell.

Even if they're fake and artificial...you should still try and interact. It develops your social skills. If you sit in your room all day every day, you'll never know how to be around people that are worthy of you. Trust me, I speak from experience.

Try developing a superiority complex. It actually makes things a lot easier, so long as you can keep it in check. It shouldnt be that hard to do if they're as shallow as you say they are.

Also, concentrate on things that interest you. Anything besides gaming and screwing around online anyways. It helps to have something productive to devote your time to.

I'd say find those people that aren't being fake, and just want to stay in their rooms, and befriend them.

Make your own little group that hangs together, and you'll stay friends for a long time.

And I bet you're just oh so real? Well, Mr. Special, get over yourself. They're just trying to find a spot in life that's comfortable...and being young and ignorant, that's how they do it. You won't realize this until later, but you're doing the exact same thing in a slightly different way.

I go through the same thing at work everyday. I don't eat with the other employees because all they talk about is TV, which I don't watch much of. They have no lives, so they talk about total crap all the time.

All you can do is try and find people who have something real to talk about. It's easy to do, just start talking about the things you want to talk about. Those who are interested will draw closer to you, and those who aren't will leave. Just like on this BB.

You sound like a prime candidate for Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)

You should goto a dr and tell him about how you feel and he will prescribe you something that will make you more carefree and sociable.

Do not seek SSRI

I suggest Xanax, Valium, Ativan as a test

Actually, I've already realized that. I realize the thought-process thing behind everything I do, and I hate myself for being so fucking selfish. But that really has nothing to do with what I'm asking.

I do that. But it's a damn fine line between faking it and being it.

since you're framing it like it's a problem, it's obviously not okay with you to go without social interaction. you say you don't like it, but i suspect you're really just afraid of it or don't know how to approach it, because it seems unfamiliar. first of all, you're not better or worse than anyone else. people know that they're just talking about shallow stuff a lot of the time -- but that doesn't make them shallow. if you got to know many of them you would find a lot more depth than you realize. they just try to find a common ground when they're socializing, and that common ground is often pretty superficial. it doesn't mean they've sold their souls to the devil.

you don't have to try that hard to make friends. there are usually people who aren't uptight about newcomers joining their group. ask if you can sit with them at mealtimes, and relate to them in whatever way you find you have in common. even if it's just for a couple minutes a day.

you say you don't find social interaction interesting. well guess what? this board is a social interaction. and anyway, social interaction's primary purpose is not to be interesting -- it's to provide a sense of comfort and belonging that you seem to be lacking. so not to be harsh, but get over yourself. other people are just like you in so many ways!

there's a difference between not being special and having stuff in common with others. i didn't say he wasn't special. in fact, i made a point of not saying that, because i don't know if it is actually true.
