Is it healthy for a young man who's left home to not keep in contact with family?
Everytime they try and talk to me it's like a chore to pretend you actually want to talk to these people. Mother, Father, Sister, Cousins...I just don't care, and don't really want to know them, and I'd be quite happy not talking to them for ages, if ever.
Is this unnatural though? I assume we're supposed to feel close to our family, but I really don't. I just feel a depressing obligation to talk to them, because we're related. But I really don't want to.
Will this have adverse consequences I can't forsee?

I haven't seen my parents in four years...And I only talk to them VERY sporadically. I think I'm better for it, because they only depress me.
I talk to my older sister, though.

Your family will always be the people who are ultimately closest to you and who you will turn to in times of crisis. There's no sense severing your ties with them becuase they annoy you a little. Something like abuse would justify it, but sabotaging your relationship with your family over nothing is stupid.

Re: Is it healthy for a young man who's left home to not keep in contact with family?
i feel the same way. i really need/want to move out, money is a problem. as soon as i do, i think i'll cut off contact with my father completely, which kind of means not talking to my mother much. i'll probably keep contact with my sister, but she's moving to canberra, so who knows.
all i know is that i'd take the opportunity of leaving home and not seeing/talking to my family for a long time in a second.

Re: Is it healthy for a young man who's left home to not keep in contact with family?
How regularly do you feel obliged to contact them?
I'd say to speak with them around every month or so, just to get the highlights so that you don't lose touch. In 10, 20, 30 years you may want them in you life; burning the bridge with your family is a tough thing that lasts a very long time, reconnecting isn't a simple process.

Re: Is it healthy for a young man who's left home to not keep in contact with family?
It's not at all unhealthy. Being related to someone doesn't automatically mean you get along with them. People tend to forget that.
Don't cut them off entirely. Though you don't enjoy spending time with them, you still love them, and you'll probably realise that later on. Maybe as your parents get older.
Who knows. If it feels right, go with it. Just don't lose contact.

Re: Is it healthy for a young man who's left home to not keep in contact with family?
I have friend's who's parents ring them while they're out, to see whats happenin. We're all between 20 and 25. My mother would only ring me if she had reason, and I have friends who rarely talk to their parents.
So everyone is different. If you have no need to contact your family and don't live with them, you're not doing anything wrong by not contacting them.
Maybe send them a postcard once a month? ;P

I talk to my mom and sister pretty regularly now. But when I first moved out, yeah, it was a big pain in the ass.

I've always been told that when you first move out and start your own life, you don't really want much contact, but later you do. As of now, I can't wait to move out and get the fuck away from these crazy ass people.

No, it's not that. I'd shrivel and die without my friends.

QFT
My mom was trying to screw me outta my trust fund, and my grandfather and stepfather both helped.
As soon as I get the cheque, I'm outta here.
Then again I've never been terribly close to my moms side of the family.
Any way, I think its fine to not be interested in contact for awhile, if you and your family aren't particularily close.
For instance, I won't be keeping in contact withmy mom, or grandfather, or step dad, but I will make sure to talk to my little bro at least once a month.

Re: Is it healthy for a young man who's left home to not keep in contact with family?
I speak to my parents every couple of weeks. Is it odd that I get on with them really well and enjoy talking to them?
I see the point, though. There is definitely a burden on parents to ensure that their children like them.
