Default Physical/Sexual Love Belittles the Concept of Soulmates

The origin of soul mates is a spiritual take off of 'platonic' love. Platonic love is love that is not physical. Usually long ago this would be when men with men and women with women would 'bond' and have such an attachment and friendship that they had true love, though still platonic love, that often they couldn't share with their partners.

The concept of having a soul mate also ties in to spiritual aspects as the greatest example of platonic love would be with 'god'

Soul mates do not need physical or sexual love. They are beyond it. Two minds as one is their love, and there is nothing like it, so my question is, now in this day and age, does attaching physical aspects of a relationship belittle the concept of soulmates?

I am all for having your partner be your soul mate, but I think it defeats the purpose of the concept

I definitely had a soulmate like this. The greatest platonic, and mutual love I've ever had, and then this person told me they thought they were gay. This hit me hard though I stayed friends with them and eventually they told me of an experience with another girl, and the pain it caused me was unbareable. I felt like my heart was being ripped out. Eventually I decided I loved them, and it could move to a physical level, so it did as some of you may know.

In this day and age this is at least somewhat acceptable that two soulmates of the same gender can become lovers, though I question if this belittles our relationship because of the definition of soulmates we should have been above all physical love, though we weren't and it makes me question if we are so strong that we broke boundaries, or we crumbled.

Physical love is an expression, for me, of something deeper.

In this day and age, the ideas of not sharing your physical body as well as your spirital body is silly, to most.

And in reality, I don't understand how "soulmates" suddenly become LESS when they become "physical".

Share your bodies on ALL levels. Not just one. That is true love.

And what of 'Soul-Ewes'?

Lookin' deep into those calm brown eyes? Smelling the sweet green grass of spring on her breath? Mmmmmm mmmm.

Well do you believe love is meant to be complicated?

I don't necessarily think that it's less once it becomes physical, but from a religious standpoint, which i DON'T have, the first love humans knew was platonic, and the greatest love we're supposed to have is platonic with god, it's more like our feelings are supposed to be enough, as in knowing that there is undying love, and that there is almost some sort of redemption in platonic love because it's a situation where we do not succumb to perhaps 'sinful' wants.

In reality I know that I have made the best decision in my life persuing this relationship, though my mind wanders trying to find reasons to prove myself wrong, because apart of me does want to be wrong. I would rather not have a homosexual present or past, I have loved and hated my heterosexual experiences... but damn were they easy, and I can't wait to have another one, but in reality I could wait a lifetime, because I'm happy.

I'm also so unhappy.

I have an extremely complicated love... if it was platonic it would be so much easier... so much safer

This gist is that i'm threatening my realationship with my soulmate because I cannot resist physical urges

The concept of a 'soul mate' has been disregarded countless times by science and general human nature over history.

There's no such fucking thing as "soul mates". Love makes it feel like you were "meant to be" with your partner. You can fall in love with a lot of different people and subsequently feel like they are all 'soul mates' at the time.

Personally I don't have that viewpoint either, so the idea of a "love of God" doesn't apply to me.

Really, I think the most wholesome love any one person can have with another is the love of sharing their body, mind, and spirit.

That's the end of this conversation, for me.

This viewpoint is painfully stupid and naive, to the point where I wholly endorse the idea of "soul mates being above physical urges."

That way, stupid fucks will breed less.

Seriously - what the hell is so wrong with sex? Why is it this vaguely dirty and immoral thing in so many minds?

My husband and I are soul mates and I love him so much I want to be close to him in all ways. Everytime he and I have sex it reaffirms our bond as a couple. I think if anything, sex STRENGTHENS our love and committment to each other, because the more we do it, the better we get along.

Never had sex with someone truly special, then? Find someone you'd consider a soulmate, someone you really love, and have sex with them, and then tell me it belittles the concept.

The concept of the soulmate has nothing to do with platonic love. The concept is two minds that are connected on a different level than either party is able to feel with anyone else. This connection is what's important. Bringing a physical aspect into it changes things only in that it can potentially make the relationship less stable. But that's another issue entirely. Think about it this way, what if your soulmate were a mechanic and you took your car in to get fixed and through sheer coincidence found your friend working at the place you took it in? Does establishing this new relationship between mechanic and client change anything about your deep rooted connection to each other? If it does, you obviously don't have any understanding of what a soulmate is.

I think the real issue here is that you don't want to have a homosexual relationship and you're trying to think of ways to justify cutting it off.

Edit: to clarify, do you think soulmates should be "above" fixing cars? The idea doesn't even make sense. Neither does the idea that you should be "above" physical expressions of love.

You're smart, but that's just some ignorant shit right there. Science is a word that translates into knowledge; and I tell you this: humans know two things and two things only - running and seeking. The rest is information that can give us ideas, but never do we gain more knowledge.

I don't believe in soulmates, 'cuz i know i have the capability to fall in love deeply and truthfully with lots of people... but I do believe that really good sex between two people who love each other deeply and profoundly is a powerfully spiritual experience.

The concept of "soulmates" is just nature's con, to get you to hang around together for long enough, in order that you may raise your darling babies to an age that they can look after themselves. So you feel that this person is your soulmate when, in actual fact, there is no such thing.

Even our capacity for emotions have been naturally selected.

WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT EVEN MEAN? First off you claim that the other guy was being "ignorant," then instead of proving this point you went off on a COMPLETELY irrelevant tangent.

There's no such thing as a soulmate. Even if there is, don't you think it somewhat convenient that, out of the 6 billion people on Earth, "soulmates" seem to find each other... all the time? What if the one person in the entire world who was "meant for you," with whom you could experience love above anything you've ever imagined, is currently living in Zimbabwe?

Also, believing in soulmates is completely ridiculous if you don't believe in God or in some other mystical force. Because, if there's nothing to watch over you, who else is going to give a fuck whether you find your perfect match? The stars? I think they're a bit busy transforming hydrogen into helium (sounds like a trying task) to concern themselves with the lives of pitiful humans.

Very, very true. I have always thought this. Couples always meet each other at work, through friends, at a wedding, etc.

If my soulmate lives in Zimbabwe... Well, that's just tough luck, isn't it?

O ye of little faith...tsk, tsk.

You misunderstand the concept of soul mates because you have yet to know seeking, but only running.

When you seek, you love and respect your self and others. When you love and respect others, you will be honest with them, share openly with them, and be willing to grow with them. With these three states met, trust and fusion occur over time as the two grow in the same direction. If harmony is attained and maintained, two souls will grow into one between two bodies - this is a soul-mate, and this is why it can be found within anyone who is as willing to grow with you as you are with them.

Now shut up.

I don't overly believe in soulmates, but I like to say... you are my soul mate

This thought entered my mind after a class I had where we briefly brought up the subject... I of course didn't saying anything while our class talked about it as I dont want any classmates or professors thinking any shit.... plus it would just be inappropriate

I probably am looking for a way to cut the relationship off, I never will... or maybe I will... but yea glitterpunk I pretty much agree with you

I personally just feel so completely in an incomplete love because I feel like I dont get enough of anything.

So yea.... right....

If I can't fuck a girl(and fuck her good, mind you,) we're not soul mates. The very concept of "love" is based around sex and creation. We love our parents because they fucked to make us, sometimes we don't even love them. We love our "soul mates" not because they're fun to hang around with but because at some point in time, we know we're going to fuck them.

For all of you who have brought up the difficulty and impossiblity of finding your soulmate as they could live in zimbabwe, you are retarded. Aside from the fact that you would probably not have all that much in common with a zimbabwean if you were not from there, the real reason that you are retarded is that you dont understand that you can have more than one soulmate, that people can fall in love, platonically or not and find a connection deeper than anything superficial. Sexuality does not belittle the concept of soulmates, it only makes your bond with the person that you love stronger, it's like another piece of a puzzle that starts to fit so perfectly that you know you were meant to be with that person, if only for a split second in time.

Not everything is so complicated Ojise.
