Dealing with boss- social situation
I think this belongs here.. jack?
Anyway.
Last wednesday, I went to this new job for my second time. First time boss wasn't there and I was trained on a different aspect of my job. 'Kay, so boss is here this time. We get everything setup (audio/visual stuff), and then he leaves for home, leaving me there. Before he left, he said, "Don't worry about the rest of it, they'll take care of it."
So I nod my head without really considering what was said to me. Then the class that I was teching for ends, and I'm left all alone. Now, he said "they" would take care of the rest, but he never told me who "they" were. Not knowing what to do, I close the connection to our remote campus and turn off the TVs. Now I'm thinking, "Okay, maybe someone's going to come in later tonight," so I decide to leave.
Before I can leave, the phone rings. I answer, "A/V department, this is HandOfZek." The guy asks for my boss, I tell him he's out for the night and he spouts off a message really fast, with a number and all, before I can find a pen, then hangs up.
My fellow co-workers and even co-boss warned me about my boss. They told me that he had a short temper and REALLY disliked it when a message is written down wrong/not written. So I'm freaking out. I find a pen, write down what I thought the number was, and start with a summary, "Student.." the guy said he was from Student SOMETHING. Fuck. So now.. I don't remember what department the guy was from, nor the number he gave me. The message was just to have boss call him when he could. Thinking anxiously and wanting to leave, I just write, "Student loan office, call at above number when able." I try to play with the overly complicated Cisco phone to find caller ID thing, but not being familiar with the UI I was at a loss.
So I signed out for the night and went home.
Now I have to go back to work, and facemy boss again. And I'm thinking that maybe I was supposed to WAIT for "them" to show up before leaving, AND that he's going to hate me for not taking an accurate message. What if I left too early and since I wasn't waiting there, someone came by and stole a shitload of expensive hardware?
Gah.
I'm really fearing going into work tonight, and have no idea what to do when (if? I hope?) my boss starts tearing into me. Keeping in mind that I was supposed to replace another kid that was fired after his first 2 shifts.. I'm scared, yo.
Help meh!!!!1~

Re: Dealing with boss- social situation
To make matter worse (in my mind), I saw him yesterday as I was driving around.
It was at a 3-way stop on campus. He and I were the only cars at the signs, and I got there first (but not by much). He was to my right. Since I got there first, I technically had the right-of-way. But.. he wasn't far behind me, and I was afraid he thought he got there first, so I waited.
After waiting a bit, I kind of give a retarded wave and go.
Now.. I'm thinking that he thinks I'm an idiot.
/sigh..

Re: Dealing with boss- social situation
Zek, calm the fuck down man.
Worst that happens? You get fired.
Just calm down, and act cool. If he asks if he got any messages, you can either lie to him, or tell him the truth. Personally I'd tell the truth.
After that, you say "Sir, I need to ask you a few question." and ask him what the fuck you're gotta do. Really, if he gets pissed off at you needing to know how to do your job, he's a twit.
You'll be fine, friend.

Re: Dealing with boss- social situation
Gus is right, everything will be FINE.
You just need to calm down and explain what happened. (if he even asks) Just think about how you have to save money for the new baby and FORCE yourself to stick with this job.

Re: Dealing with boss- social situation
You are blowing this far out of proportion. All of this shit is his fault. If he doesn't see it that way in the morning, just look him dead in the eye the whole time he's talking/yellin at you. Don't let him intimidate. You won't get fired man, never heard of someone getting fired for being uninformed.

Oh, I thought you meant the first post.
Yeah, instructor was 10 minutes late and running around when he got there to let us take the test, heh. WebCT screwed him, so we played around for a while.
Anyway..
I got here (work) and my boss said nothing about any of that, so I think I'm in the clear. He was even really nice and said I could go home and he'd pay me for working 'till 8.
Then one of the Laramie kids called and said they wanted to stay, meaning I had to stay too! Grrr...
Ah well, homework to do now that boss left.

Re: Dealing with boss- social situation
Mate, if you weren't properly trained or had things properly explained to you then don't worry at all because it's simply NOT YOUR FAULT.
And to be honest, when I was reading the post, I was waiting for the bit when you said about how it'd all been a big prank to make you freak out. I mean, that's how it read - for all you know, your co-workers may have made that point about your boss getting angry at bad messages and then deliberately called up with a silly message, hanging up before they knew you'd be able to have worked out everything they'd said. Or something.
But seriously, don't worry at all mate - their fault, not yours.
