What's the worse emotion/state of mind?
For those who have enough experience to have an opinion on this matter, what do you think is the worse emotion: severe depression or heartbreak? Or is there a difference?

Depression, for sure. Heartache fades over time. Although the hurt is more acute with heartache. But yeah, I still say depression because you can't really cure it.

I'd have to say depression, although I've never been depressed. As Sick_Boy said, heartbreak fades.

Re: What's the worse emotion/state of mind?
I had heartbreak, but my heart was telling me that it was all my fault, but I knew in my mind that it was all her fault, but she made me think I was responsible and since I stretched my resources to their limits for her, I succumbed to my heart. I'm in a major depression now, almost a year, yay. Zoloft didn't work on me, I couldn't remember what I did that day or anything. Plus, I know in my mind that I don't need to take anti-depressants because I CAN HELP MYSELF, thats why people don't take medicine when they are sick, their minds KNOW they can heal by themselves. Heartbrake leads to depression so I don't know what to say for my answer to the proposed question.

Well I look at it this way, heartbreak is a type of depression.Heartbreak fades but depression can last a long time so.I'd go with depression.

Depression-induced psychosis.
Worse than any heartbreak, I'd think.
Heartbreak can lead to depression, but it's the depression that remains.

After a while, depression kinda becomes masochistically pleasuable. Being happy just feels wrong.

Neither. The worst state of mind is becoming completely numb and apathetic to the world around you.

Which is a sign of depression.

Re: What's the worse emotion/state of mind?
It doesn't matter which is stays and which fades - judging on the feelings that you feel during either, I'd have to say heartache.
Ive had both - and depression due to heartache also.
Heartache is the worst fucking feeling in the world - there is no way to describe that feeling.
Something you once had and loved is gone forever. Something that you took for granted and enjoyed daily is gone. Everything reminds you of that past. You cannot get it out of your mind. You have no way of forgetting it. You can't eat or sleep. You don't have the spirit to do anything. All of the spare time that you now have is spent thinking about what you would be doing with the time when you were with the girl/guy. No one who is happy wants to listen to your stories. You wish you could spend one more hour with that girl/guy. Songs remind you of the good times and you break down and cant stop crying. It feels like you will be like this forever and that the only cure is that girl/guy to come back to you.

I think heartache is worse, and this is coming from someone who a few years ago was severly depressed.

A bad heart-ache/break-up will completely change you mentally. People always say how ive changed and that now i'm an asshole and im cold-hearted. - sucks.

I guess it's equivalent to a trauma or a loss.

The after-effects are, yes.
What you actually go through in the 2 ~ 5 months of heartache is indescribable.

I'm thankful for heartache and depression...they lead me to suicide, which I survived, and have since found a cure.

Re: What's the worse emotion/state of mind?
Coming from someone who has had a very recent break up, and is still sore over it, I would have to say that the first few weeks of a break up are worse than depression.
It's just, insane.

Even though my ex is now a complete bitch to me, I still feel like I love her. I think it's a sign that I really did, in fact love her. She's just too stubborn to see it.

Re: What's the worse emotion/state of mind?
Depression, for some, is constant. Sure it's experienced in different levels, but eventually life becomes either "really depressed" or when it's good "slightly depressed".
So heart ache would just be another burden on the already existing depression.
How ever, if I had the chance to start free of either, I'd deffinatly pick heart ache over depression.
It'll hurt for a while, but you get over it.

Re: What's the worse emotion/state of mind?
I have to go with heartache to.
I've been depressed on and off most of my life - being bi-polar and al.
And I went through a bad heartbreak in January.
And I much preffer depressed to how I felt then.

I don't think either. Uncertainty has always been the worst state of mind for me. That and worry.

Re: What's the worse emotion/state of mind?
Severe depression. Trust me on this, I have recurring states of it where I cant even force myself out of bed, cry for no reason, cant be bothered to do anything, hate everything, think of dying and everything being pointless, sleeping for incredibly long periods of time, having everyone tell you youve just got to get over it. Its not just an emotional feeling either, my hands throb and I get this horrible sinking feeling in my chest.

You should get addicted to heroin so you can hit bottom faster and thus recover...depression takes too long to get to the turning point, lol.

Fucking amen brother, I think heartbreak is the worst pain, all that in your paragraph sums it up perfectly, it's not about how long the pain lasts, it's about how intense it is, there's nothing worse I think, and I have went through a depression before, with lack of spirit, just sitting at home, practically souless. I hate to lose good bands when there are breakups, like bands that you listened to all the time and made you think of her, now just brings pain, why I don't like the Beatles anymore

Re: What's the worse emotion/state of mind?
Self-Loathing, insignificance, rejection, paranoia, feeling disgust at ones-self and others, and anger are all pretty bad.
I guess in a word this is "depression", but it's always felt more complicated than that for me, I was alive, still functioning, and yet dead at the same time, when you begin to awaken from the dream, or when something triggers these feelings...damn it's bad.
But tbh, i feel like I could conquer anything I have ever felt in this current moment, I'm not sure if that's saying something about my present mindset, or my lack of "feeling bad" in the past.
Perhaps a mixture, i've felt pretty damn bad before.

depression, hands down.
You can't sleep, therefore there is no escape from the pain. Its internal pain, no quick medications to solve it (those pills don't really work). Its like you're in a hole that gets harder and harder to get out of.

Re: What's the worse emotion/state of mind?
Meh, I think Jealously and Rejection are pretty damn bad. I'm a reasonably jelous person, well not jealous as such, probably paranoid or something like that, but you get the drift. I'm always having the "what if she was to....." thought, it's not that I don't trust her, I just overthink situations.
Also, with rejection, i'm sincerely affraid of being rejected, not only by my own girlfriends and friends, but just people in general, scares the hell out of me.
I've never actually been depressed, but from what i've heard it's the worst state of mind ever, because it's not something that eventually fades, you have to help yourself out of it.
