Default Are you numb?

Just something I've noticed popping up more and more, in this exponentially selfish society of "looking out for number one", that people are just becoming completely numb. I just want to get the consensus of this board before I elaborate. So please, cold hearted fucker role call.

How exactly do you mean?

It sounds teenage and angsty, but I no longer care or emotion into any relationship because I know it's going to go wrong,I'm going to get dumped, and be alone again.

If I felt everytime I had a relationship that went wrong,I'd never stop crying.

i think a certain emotional hardening is normal and healthy. you are conditioned to things going wrong etc etc.

i dont see how you can escape it really.

That's pretty much what I was going to say (I believe, can't remember) just more long-winded like with an attempt at a positive spin. I was hoping for a poll for the consensus of who's numb, but that's not what I got.

I'm somewhat of an objectivist, but I don't feel numb.

Oh yeah, and "exponentially growing" doesn't mean that it's getting HUGE. That's an incorrect use of the world, like saying "penultimate" to describe the ultimate and final version of something.

I'm a linguistic lush, but thanks for the vocab verification.

I'm less numb then I was ten years ago. I'd actually say that with age my outlook on life has changed dramatically. I'm more open and less judgmental. I'm less likely to think that I am 'right' because I'm only too aware of how my life experiences make it difficult to be objective sometimes.

I've been numb...and I'd say that it's painful coming out of it.

So, no...definately not numb.

This is insane, how can you expect to be happy if you make it an impossibility?

Numbness is a submission. What qualifies as "good" is becoming more and more just merely the absense of "bad". Doesn't anyone want to even try anymore?

The world's cold and full of assholes yada yada yada, THEY'RE NOT ASSHOLES JUST TO BE ASSHOLES! They're human fucking beings just like you who have turned cold for that very attitude never realizing that instead of changing anything they're solidifying the very thing they have contempt for.

Doesn't anybody realize how insane this is?

I'm not advocating a pure naivity, that's just crazy. Because it's PASSIVE. Why not just make a positive difference instead of accepting the inevitability that people are assholes, thus becoming an asshole yourself?

There's too much at risk.

Think about it.

You get a painfull crush on someone, and they're everything to you.

You've had bad relationships before, you've had fucking awfull relationships before,

but this person feels so right, so perfect,

how could anything go wrong, because s/he's so right for you?

So grudgingly, you curse yourself for being a 'numb, heartless asshole' and start to give in to feeling all warm and glowy.

And then,usually, you'll get a text saying

'tihs isnt working!'

or a Email which says

'I've been thinking of ending this for a long time now, but couldnt find the right time to tell you.

I'm sorry,goodbye.'

Or, he just dissapears, never calls, never comes round, forgets you exist, and hope that you dissapear out of his life,

or...

Anyway, so it ends, painfully,

and you find yourself heartbroken again.

And you curse yourself for daring to feel anything, for even thinking that something nice could ever happen.

Ever.

So then you resolve that you'll never feel again and you'll never trust another person with your emotions or love.

And yes, to those of you who read this far,

I am utterly drunk.

Numb or not numb? Those options suck.

Hardened or vulnerable? Those options suck.

In both cases a person subjects him/herself to the whims of others. They're defense mechanisms. They facilitate reaction.

Maybe it takes some aging and experience, but it feels a whole lot better to be comfortable with yourself. When you have a good sense of self-realization, how others behave toward/around you becomes largely irrelevant.

Having good interactions with people is icing on the cake, not a standard expectation. Having negative interactions never really seems to happen because it's easily disregarded.

I am very shallow in many categories, but I try not to. It depends on what happens to me in life.
