Default Guys: Opinion on poetry?

I'm a girl, and I write poetry. Whether it's good or bad doesn't really matter here. But sometimes it's about whatever guy I'm really into. And I can't get this kid out of my head so I wrote something about him.

Now, guys, if you got a poem from a girl you don't really know--someone you've seen around, but haven't had a conversation with and don't have feelings either way for--would your reaction be "hey this is kind of cool"? Or more along the "freaky stalker!!!" line. Or the even worse "let's laugh about this with my friends!" sort.

I just feel like I should attempt something sooner or later or I'm going to go crazy.

Get one of your girlfriends to talk to him and give him the hint that you like him. Poetry would come off, to me at least, as a bit wierd, but it'd be sweet if we'd been going out for a while.

Like previously posted, it depends on the chick. In most cases I would think it was awesome though. I enjoy poetry, and chicks. Good combination in my opinion.

I think it's a good idea. It gives depth on who you are. Personally I think poetry is great. I'm a guy. I normally don't share it though. But, I suggest you go for it. What's the worst that could happen? Also, it is always good to love. Maybe not love in this instance, but you get my drift.

You know, after you used that word, "hideous", I had a vision of a chick with a huge wart on her nose, black hair, and hairy arms giving me a poem, and ew, just ew.

Well, thing is, I can write most sorts of poetry if you give me a little time to learn the basics (when it comes to new styles I don't already have down pat, like Quattrains and shit), and I actually wrote very good poems all the way back in mid-school when I had to, and I'm even better a wordsmith now than I was then. I can do it, but I lack the passion to make it my life's work, I tend to dislike limitations in the forms of stanza length or syllable limitation or fucking iambic pentameter or what have you, because I feel they negate the entire purpose of poetry: Freedom of expression and the creation of something that you find beautiful and meaningful, no matter the form it's written in. When you tell someone "Write about anything you like, but you have to keep it at 5 lines a stanza, it has to rhyme and you have to use alliteration at least twice!" like teachers always do (from elementary on up through college English), you force the person to change around their original vision to keep it within the given parameters, and usually, the quality of the poetry suffers immensely. This isn't the writer's fault; it's the fault of whichever fag poet/ess decided they enjoyed writing within strict limitations and making others do the same. I'm no exception to this; when I'm forced to work within too many parameters, or certain complicated ones (like alternating stressed/unstressed syllables the whole fucking way through; that is HARD shit to work with), my poetry comes out shitty. However, when I have a vision in mind and a drive to write a poem, and I have no limitation, my work can be very good. Good, but not great, because I lack the true passion of a poet. Not a bad thing; it just means poetry isn't really my bag, baby. My bag's psychology, medicine and reading/writing.

It really does depend on the quality of the poetry. For example, I dont want a piece of shit poetry that blatently points out that you want to fuck me, I dont want it personal (like mentioning my or your name), but I want to hear your authorial voice come through.

Give it a deeper meaning and I will take it seriously, if it's bullshit [edit, no i wouldnt]

(Just give him the damn poem)

I'd save it for later on if I were you. Regardless of your physical qualities, one of the things that really bothers me is when a girl comes on too strong. Seriously, it's just plain awkward and ends up being counterproductive. You should also consider that he might not be a big fan of poetry.

I'm not saying you should quit writing, in fact, you should write as much as you can, but keep it to yourself, and when the time is right, you can make that move in order to show your affection.

I just started writing poetry over a year ago. I showed one of them to someone and who then asked me questions about my writing 'style'. I was completely clueless as to what they were talking about, and still am. I write it for myself though, to try to express something...as a means of releasing it from within. If someone likes it, then that's nice too.

If the girl's hot and fun and generally good girlfriend material, getting a poem from her would be alarmingly hot. A little creative ability is damn cool in an already cool girl.

On the other hand, if the girl's not "really your type" (pronounced "not attractive") it'd be a bit creepy.

Speaking from a poet's perspective, I think it would be fucking awesome. Guys like it when girls take the initiative and your way is perfect.

That aside, I have found very few proficient poets on totse, and if you'd like, I'd enjoy reading some of your poetry

Send it to toraton@gmail.com if you want to share. All of my poetry can be found at http://www.lithedark.com

If you don't really know this guy, haven't really had a conversation with him, and all around only naively know him from the role he plays as the ambiguous figure in your thoughts with a physical appearance you've apparently been smiten with then how are you supposed to right a poem about him?

Poetry is supposed to go a little under the surface, but you only have a surface understanding of him.

Sure, I haven't had a conversation with him but I've heard every hilarious remark he makes in class and every conversation he has with his friends whenever I see him--which is for about two hours every day. And it's from what I've seen about that makes me like him, not the way he looks. Yeah, I think he's cute, but no one else would think so.

And I'd love to get to know him on more than a surface level, but when I really like a guy, it's hard for me to intiate something.

Yeah, I can easily see being really touched by a girl's poem written for me, but as I said, it'd have to be written by a dame who knows me well, and knows that a sap-ass romantic overture of a poem would be a really, really bad idea.

Girls, if you write a poem about me, include some 'Floyd references and possibly a guitar solo, if you could. "Touching"? No. I just think a poem about me formed from Pink Floyd lyrics and with an amazing exiting guitar solo like Comfortably Numb's would be trippy, funny and cool.

"IIIIIIII-I-I-I...Have become....Comfortably Tom..."

I don't know what universe you grew up in, but in general the hotter a girl is, the less confident she is. There are exceptions, of course, but that proves to be quite true.

No woman ever really believes she's desirable. They might tell themselves it, but they don't believe it.

It's a simple as this, hot girls do not seek anyone, because everyone will seek them. Some actually become insecure about their looks, but that's not a rule, that's an exception.

Ugly girls on the other hand, are usually rather afraid of contact with guys. I've seen it.

EDIT: Meh, blatant attempts at picking me up before anything has happened between me and the girl freak me out - be it Carmen Electra or some kind of female monster. So really, that's about the worst that can happen. Plus, if he's got an overdeveloped sense of humour he can freak out and make fun of you.

My best advice would be, wait some time before making that move.
