Default Just how reliable is "The Pill?"

I'm looking for some percentages, or something.

Here's the situation, day after my girlfriend's period ended, she comes over, we shag(for the first time! ), then she tells me she forgot to take her pill this morning but would take it when she got home.

So, just to calm my nerves a little, what are the chances she's now carting around my unborn child?

relax dude, you'll be fine.

i've only ever done that once, but only cuz i hadn't had sex in a while and wasn't expecting to have sex that day...

(still not a good excuse to forget, i know, but see me here with no baby? as long as she took it right after when she got home and didn't miss it the next day and such, should be ok)

if you're really unsure, you can get the MAP depending where you are (over the counter), (Morning After Pill if you don't know what i'm talking about) ... MAP is just an upped level of the same stuff in the pill tho.

so, chances are, you have nothing to worry about, but if you're the nervous type, get the MAP. your choice.

if it's the day after her period ended then you should have nothing to worry about. For about 5-6 days or so after a chick finishes her period those are the safe days when you can have sex with out any protection

It isn't too likely.

I'm not certain, but if I remember corectly the failure rates for contraception are a little hyped, although that does assume their used corectly.

How long had she been taking it before this?

Edit* Contraceptive info.

The effectiveness of the pill is 98% which means that 2 out of every 100 women per year will get pregnant using an oral contraceptive. In order for the pill to be effective it must be taken at the same time every day. For some brands of birth control pills, missing your pill by as little as 2-4 hours can make the pill ineffective as a form of birth control. In all cases, it is recommended that if you miss taking your pill by more than 2 hours, you should:

* use an alternative form of birth control (condoms and foam) for the rest of your cycle

* continue to take the remainder of your pills on your normal schedule

Yeah, I think the pill takes like 30 days of regular use or something to kick in. In other words, her forgetting it a few days last month would be more of a reason to be concerned.

The correct answer as far as percentages go is 92-99.7% effective.

http://www.plannedparenthood.org/bc/cchoices4.html#PILL

What brings the failure rate up is "user error" such as the one your gf just did. That damn little pill needs to be taken at the same time every day. I'm hearing more and more about pregnancies occurring despite being on the pill.

She might want to seriously consider how well she can stick to her pill-taking schedule and perhaps consider getting depo-provera shots, which have an estimated 3 in 1000 failure rate.

There's no such thing as safe sex without protection. There are days when you are less likely to fall pregnant then others, but you can't just use no contraception on "safe days" and know for certain you're never going to get pregnant

The way I use the pill is to put a reminder in my phone for 10pm every night and when it goes off, I take the pill and reset the alarm for 10pm the next day. I think that's the most effecient way to keep track of the time.
