The "I Love You" Return
I experienced the lack of a return of "I love you" just once, because after that I never, ever said it again unless it was said to me first. I was 17, and he responded with "Yeah, I know." Horrible!
Since then, it's been said to me twice or thrice when I didn't feel the same way, and I've gone from the awkward blank stare to saying "No you don't, silly!" or "Why on Earth is that?"
Seinfeld fans will be familiar with the "big matzo ball". George's girlfriend, instead of returning the "I love you" said "I'm hungry. Let's go get something to eat".
Share your tales of humiliation or awkwardness, whichever side of the love declaration you were on.

Over msn:
Her: I love you
Me: yeah, I know...
Her: do you love me?
Me: honestly, I don't know, I would sorta be lying if I said I did
Her: oh... ok
not the exact words, but something to that effect

Re: The "I Love You" Return
Ouch, dude.
Me: "I love you"
Her: "......I love you too"
Me: "Why the hesitation?"
Her: "I just..I don't know, I don't want to get your hopes up"
This was said by Kelly, a little before we broke up, when she was in the "I don't know if I still love you" stage.
I should've fucking cut that shit off.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
I just find "I love you" is thrown around a bit much these days.
I mean, I have friends who start going on like that to someone who they have only known for 3 weeks

Re: The "I Love You" Return
The term "I love you" is thrown around too much, I think. When those giddy girls say something to the effect of "OMG! HAHA OMG YOU LIKE SOOO KNOW I LOVE YOU!" It makes me want to smack them.
"I love you" should be taken seriously. If all meaning is taken out of the expression, how is it that one phrase that gives you assurance of how your signifigant other feels?
Anyway, on topic:
Him: I love you
Me: :blushes:
Him: Do you love me back?
Me: I can see it happening, but I don't want to say it until I'm sure I actually mean it
Him: :look on his face told me he wasn't very happy about my respnose:

Reminds me of that scene in Shaft, where one of his many girls says she loves him on the phone, "I know baby, I know..."
Gotta love that guy.
In general, those words are thrown around a little too much. Best escape clause is smile and kiss. It gives her/him something that shows you're affectionate, but doesn't necessarily say the words back, and also gives them something to focus on and take their minds off the subject.

I hate when people try to sneak that shit in like it's a meaningless phrase to end a conversation. Only time it's acceptable like that is with a longtime friend.

'I love you' is a meaningless and stupid phrase.
It's said by soppy lame and clingy people, or it's said in a dying relationship, where it's become obligatory to say it.

That's so cynical and sad! Isn't "I love you" also said between two people who actually love each other in a loving relationship?

I hate the phrase "I love you." I especially hate it when girls sneak it in there, so that you can either say it back when you don't mean it, or say something else that will completely ruin the relationship.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
Nobody's mentioned the dreaded, "I love you too."
My ex-fiance... the bastard never said "I love you." He always said "I love you too." I'm serious. Not ONCE in our relationship did he ever say "I love you." I was the one who said "I love you, J---" and he would say, "I love you too." Ugh. Bastard.
My husband and I don't say "I love you too." It goes something like this:
Me: I love you baby.
Him: I love you.
or
Him: I love you my Sarahs.
Me: I love you my Christys.
We're disgusting.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
It's not cynical, it's truthfull.
My mum and I have the relationship based on 'I love you's' ,
if she phones, she'll say 'love you' at the end of the phone call, and I feel obliged to say 'love you too..'.
Now I'm sure that the phrase is used genuinely sometimes, but if used too often it just becomes old and dusty, and just downright boring, like a metaphorical Dildo in a decaying marriage, the Dildo that once was used by both as something
kinky, untill it got boring.
I'm pretty much with ---Beany-- on this one,
the only thing it is safe to say that dreaded phrase to is pets.
Ie,
yoyo: 'I love you pookins!!!'
GuineaPig: 'SqueesqueeSQUEEEE!!'
yoyo: 'Aww...you're just saying that..'
GuineaPig: '....squip?..'

Re: The "I Love You" Return
I try to avoid it. No matter how they say it and when, I'll just smile and give them a hug.
And ironically, it's not boyfriends I have the "I love you" problem with, it's my friends. I've had friends declare their love for me and that totally ruins the friendship. Or it makes it a bit weird for a while.
Every relationship I've been in, they've said it first. My ex said it after we were together for a month. (This is really dramatic.) We were in a fight and I walked out of the house. He ran after me and grabbed my hand so I would look at him. I stopped screaming and looked at him with this *what the fuck do you want?* attitude. He said it and I said, "No you don't." Then he argued how he really did.
A month after I said it to him.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
Now this sort of started in an email so I will begin there!
Her: "Its so unusual for couples to be so happy in love over here"
Me: "Is that what you feel? Love? I think... well no I am fairly sure I do too"
Then continues on the phone with me!
Me: I have fallen in love with you!
Her: (After saying something abotu how she is so scared I feel Im being put under pressure by her and all) I just cant believe how quickly Ive fallen in love with this...this great guy all that way away in Ireland.
Me: (At the end of the conversation as we are about to hang up) I love you
Her: Wow... That sounds totally different
Me: Ok Im worried now what do you mean
Her: Well you told me when I loved you that you were only after falling in love with me!
Me: Yeah?
Her: Well?
Me: Well What?
Her: Its different!
Me: Sorry... I dont know what you mean, I told you I fell in love with you and as we are about to say goodbye I say I love you.
her: Yeah I know
Me: Whats wrong? Please tell me
Her: Do you love me or are you IN LOVE with me?
Me: What?
Her: I mean in love
Well basically she said that where she comes from being in love doesnt mean the same thing as in its like you feel alot and want to be with the person all the time and all but its not as serious as Loving someone which is where you basically cant live without them.
Me: Well I would on that definition tell you Yes I love you
Her: Oh my god I love you so much
Me: I love you so much I really do now please fuck all this degrees of love thing, when I tell you I love you thats what I mean not just that I like you a whole lot
Her: I cant believe how wonderful things are over there as in they are just so much more simple than we try to make them over here. I love you I really love you so much
Me: I love you to death and will miss you like hell till we talk tomorrow night, I really will, Bye
Her: I love you Bye!
I just thought Id be the one to go all muchy and shit! I mean I got a fright when she told me there was a difference in that I thought she was only really saying that she liked me alot even though I though she was saying she loved me and I returned her feelings but it all worked itself out!

Re: The "I Love You" Return
HA! I remember the first guy I said "I love you" to, it was after my very first kiss and I really meant it, otherwise I would't have kissed him in the first place... it was one of those 'could have been perfect' moments... except his response was "oh... *silence*..... *more silence*..." So I was like "yeaaaah, ok" got in the passenger seat and sat silently until he dropped me off at home. I'm glad he didn't just say it to say it and avoid the akwardness. He did say it the next day after a night of deep contemplation though, so he was redeemed. :P
I used to be so afriad of rejection that I'd wait to say it until I knew I'd get the desired response. But now, I'm so fucked up and accustomed to feeling like shit that I just say it when I feel it for the sake of being forthcoming. I don't really care what the response is anymore... in fact, at this point the shock of ever hearing the words "and I love you" would probably kill me.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
Reminds me of that time I really liked a girl (this was a few years ago.. but I'm still pretty sure I was attracted to her in many ways - anyone who read my thread knows)
We were supposed to be going out, but little did I know she was a huge slut. We were about twelve and to be honest, she had her fair share of fornication (she's still at it today, probably collecting STDs). Anyway, we were supposed to be going out and we talked and stuff, I was feeling great.. what was wrong though that by the end of the week scince we hadn't done anything, she went out with some other guy.
Or was it two.. I don't know. I rang her up to make sure we were gong out cos she had dumped me or something.. said she didn't want to go out with me, so I asked her out again.
Me: Will you go out with me
Her: <Lengthy pause> N-no..
Me: Why not?
Her: <HANGS UP>
Next day I got the piss taken out of me, was still sorta pining after her for a while. Man I was a loser. Oh wait.. no, I still am.

I think that's one of the signs of a dying relationship. Or at least, it should be.
My cat, Greenie, who has been AWOL for the past few weeks was the only one who got that said to him. He also had quite a few nicknames, such as sexybuddy and kittynigger, bitch and such things like that. I miss him.
But relationship wise: I am guilty of many of the incidents mentioned in this thread. The 'I know' one recently, but that's another story for livejournal (joking, joking)
I don't say it much anymore. I'd rather show it than say it.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
Him: I love you.
Me: We've only been together three days.
Him: So?
Me: How do you know it's for real?
Him: Um...you have nice tits?
Needless to say that relationship did not last long.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
On "ER" the other night a patient told a doctor "I love you" and he responded with "Thanks".
There should be some sort of protocol for such words. Obviously if it's unexpected and unrequited, it's incredibly awkward. If everyone gets to the point where they won't say it unless the other says it first...well, you see the problem here.

Well....Slightly more comforting than "....>stare<....Okay, let's take him off the Demerol drip now!"...Heh.
ER's suck more in real life than they do on ER, because they're much more boring and much less emotional, That's why I'm just the pill-fetcher/shot-mixer/record-fixer in the back.

An EKG, which takes all of about #20 cents worth (realistically) of supplies (jacked-up cost being about $120 or so; the sticky electrodes, at least the ones with the metal snaps, cost something like $20 each, and they use a few)...Add in the RT, who gets called from cardio-pulmonary and has to put down his newspaper and jerky to come and punch a few keys and print a sheet of paper? Somethin' like $750. It IS robbery. Oh, 5 25ug/hour Fentanyl patches, and 5 100ug/hour patches? About $900!!
Heheh, I'm gonna stfu now; time for me to stage a coup on my beer stash..I just got a hankerin'.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
lol...
My ex: "I love you"
Me: "You really are a loser with no life."
We hadn't even been going out a day at that point.
I admit, i toss the phrase around a lot with my friends, like when they do something cool i'll go "oh my god, i love you you rock!" but they're my best friends and I would never dream of relationships with them. And they know that.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
I think I've posted something like this in another thread but oh well...
(after months of getting really close)
Her: "I love you" (really quiet voice)
Me: *stunned silence*
I didn't get much sleep that night thinking about it, and then the next day:
*ring ring*
Me: Hey
Her: Oh wow I had the most amazing night, this boy walked up to me that I have liked for ages, and kissed me without asking and it was so magical...
Three months later she's pregnant and is now getting married to him.

Hmm. I won't say it unless I really mean it.
That being said, when the person I'm with says it first, and I'm not sure if I do, what do you guys suggest as a response?
In the past usually I've said "I know" and if they have a problem or ask about it, I proceed to explain why I didn't say it back. Most girls so far have been appreciative of the honesty instead of an empty "I love you too" back.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
That's an excellent question, one without a really good answer. I'm pretty sure that "I know" is probably not the best response.
I guess I like my way of handling it, which is to refute it in a breezy way. Wait, first I'll assume they mean it in a "close friends, appreciative" way. If they go on in a way that indicates they mean it in a "romantic love" sort of way, then I'll refute it.
I suspect some people are prone to blurt out "love" when they really mean "infatuation". I've had it said to me, and thought to myself along the lines of "Now how can that be? This person only sees me at my best. We haven't spent nearly enough time together for him to mean it". Eventually those words do come out, but first I'll say something like "Really? Why is that?"

Re: The "I Love You" Return
Do excuse the momentary fit of Angst,
but fuck 'love' and all the flowery bullshit that goes with it.
For most people, there is no such thing as Love. There is a cold dark emptiness which aches to be filled, and as life really isnt like a sack of shit American Romance Film, that empty space remains empty, and all attempts to fill it, be it through food, drugs, casual sex, overspending, Art, or drugs, fail.
To hell with this over hyped stupid emotion and all the pain and disruption it causes.
Ok I'm done.

I had an ex girlfriend that once said "ditto" when I said it to her. I was like "wtf..." and she said her ex-boyfriend said to her a lot.
Then another time, I did the "Yeah, I know..." to a chick when we were makin' out in our friends bathroom. I mean we were drunk, and I couldn't say I loved her 'cause it would've SERIOUSLY fucked shit up, and so that was the first thing that came to my mind.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
Along the same lines...
In the early '80's filled with meth,
Me: I've never really had a girlfriend quite like you.
Her: I never said I was your girlfriend.
--awkward silence--
Me: So what are you saying?
Her: I need to go outside and wait, aliens are supposed to pick me up.
Me: Well let's go outside, I'll wait with you.
Her: Why have you never tried to have sex with me?
Me: Because you'd be doing it for the speed I'm giving you, I want you to do it because you want me, not the drugs.
Her: I don't understand you.
Me: Maybe the aliens can explain it to you, if they show up.
I can't remember everything that transpired that night but the general gist of the situation was that Jeff, who was buying meth from me introduced his little sister Kim to me in hopes of getting free/cheap meth. She was very very hot. I allowed the situation to develop, me getting both of them high for free.
Kim was more than willing to fuck my brains out for the dope but AT THAT TIME I was too naive and insecure in my ability to be in a relationship, especially based on the drugs I had the ability to get then, and didn't want a speed-whore (as it was called then) type relationship. I wanted a girlfriend.
She wanted to fuck her connection for drugs, I wanted a relationship with this beautiful girl. It didn't happen back then, but sort of became a fuck-buddy relationship later.
The "I love you" part did come about eventually, but as it turns out, she loves anybody that can keep her high and sexually satisfied. Maybe the aliens she's waiting on can satisfy her someday.

Seinfeld fans will be familiar with the "big matzo ball". George's girlfriend, instead of returning the "I love you" said "I'm hungry. Let's go get something to eat".
Share your tales of humiliation or awkwardness, whichever side of the love declaration you were on.
When someone says "I know" to an "I love you" it means that they aren't ready to say it back yet, not that they don't want to. I said it to someone for a while before they said it back. Stop being so melodramatic about it, they might have said it back if you hadn't flipped. (I assumed you flipped). Love is fickle, don't expect it to come to you easily.

Melodramatic? Flipped? Nah, not so extreme. Just appropriately crushed for a 17-year-old.
Your take on the "I know" response is a possibility, but not the only one.

Hell, the way I see it is that the words "I love you" shouldn't be thrown around too much, but they are still just words and are ok to say. Love is action more than words, so saying it is just the first step. I guess my point is to not be so afraid of saying "the words". *Babble on*

Good attitude LP. You never know how the "words" are going to be reciprocated, if at all, but if this is your mindset, and if it comes back in spades it's a good feeling.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
The first time I was told I love you was when a guy I used to meet and kinda considered him my friend (until he got too annoying and started stalking) hugged me and said "I love you" with a voice almost in tears. He knew I didn't want him although he had his hopes up. I just said "Thank you. Let's go."
Now I've been in a relationship. The guy told me after 4 days. I got mad and found it pathetic but I didn't say anything. How can you say you love me when you don't know anything about me? I expect to hear it after at least a month. Then I wouldn't find it so rude. Now it's a long-distance relationship and he writes it to me every day. We've been together for 8 weeks.
But I already consider myself single. It was too annoying. And there's more to the story.
Saying I love you is sorta limiting. Some people are pretty careless and don't mean it when they say it, some want to pull you to themselves and act all possessive. That way or another, I'd be careful.
I'm 22. I never told it to anybody in person. Only family and friends. That's sacred for me and I hate people playing with it. Plus, in my native language it has a much, much stronger meaning than it does in English.

Re: The "I Love You" Return
well, i used to be one of those girls that said "i love you" as casually as throwing away trash...after someone said a joke, or just to fill in akward silences when no one had anything else to say. i had just come out of an extremely intense relationship where there had been a lot of love, but we were too young to truly recognize it and value it for what it was...when the guy finally said "i love you" it was confusing, and much too painful a place to confront at that point in time. without going into details, he used what he knew about me that made him love me...against me. he did this because he didnt understand how he felt and was scared, thus took it out on me...:/ stupid guys....so i thought that by saying that phrase that had destroyed me i could lessen its power and use THAT to heal what it had done to me. don't ask, broken hearts and hormones are a dangerous combination...
but yeah so this system was actually working for me, believe it or not, and it didn't freak anyone out because they knew i didn't mean it. anyway, so i met this guy...i really liked him-he was foreign, older, smart, badass, and hott. of course though, when he said something funny, i would say "i love you" just like i did to everyone else. We lay in his yard, talking and laughing and pretending we didn't want each other as bad as we did, and then just sat on my curb in the pouring, storming rain for four hours, leaning on each other and talking.
~we never kissed or touched beyond hugs~
sounds great, doesn't it?-only i was petrified. of FEELING something important, something passionate again, because in all of my maturity and intelligence i had surmised that so wonderful a thing only led to pain. i forced myself to not like him, because i didn't want to hurt him or myself, but thought that if i kept up appearances then everyone would be happy. i went to the david bowie concert the next day, so the only way we could talk was through text messaging, believe it or not. we had a freakin CONVERSATION through that, im talking like 80 text messages here...then he dropped the big one :-O and he meant it ikn a heart-wrenching way...he said it cos he had no idea what it really meant to me, he thought that i was really receptive to the thought of him saying that cuz i said it all the time, see? my own plot worked against me...i was even more petrified than before-the worst had happened! all because of my stupidity and immaturity and casualty. so, what did i do? did i apologize and face my fears or did i just run away and ignore him, to hell with what he might feel....well, you bet i ran. i ignored him, blatantly, would go out of my way to not see him or pass within ten feet of him in the hallways, or out of school. it was akward for me and confusing for him, judging by the look on his face...but i kept on making excuses until one day he wanted to come to a concert of mine. this was a big deal, and almost no other of my friends or even anyone else who cared about me was gonna be there. i saw him in the audience right before it, then after.... couldn't avoid him. he followed me, telling me how wonderful i was, apparantly impervious to my blushing face and fumbling feet as i tried to figure out how to flee this person who embodied Pain for me. when i finally had to go, he asked for a hug-the one thing that we had done, the one thing that had proven what we felt, even if we couldn't name it. i shook my head and ducked into the car, trying to ignore the shocked hurt that shone out from his features, from his very presence. i didn't know what to do, too blinded by my own hurt to avoid causing the same to others. now he's gone. moved, away-back to the country he came from. he will find another girl, he will fall in love again. but it is probably going to take longer for me to forgive myself what i did to him than for him to heal completely from what what happened.
moral of the story:
now i only say "i love you" when i TRULY mean it. not when i am expecting a response. not when there's nothing else to say. only when its the right time and the right person to say it to. don't expect love to be reciprocated, but when "i love you"s aren't returned, make sure its not because you didn't mean it in the first place.
