Default Troubled Girlfriend

I just recently got together with a girl and we have been going out for about 5 weeks, not that long. She has warmed up to me and told me a bunch of stuff, she had a troubled past, but i'm not going to get into details.

Basically what she does is cut herself on her leg,not REALLY bad,but they are kinda scratches.I have tried to talk to her about it and she tells me it's just a way for her to relieve herself from troubles or depression.Do you think there really is anything I can do about this?

NO. Just express your concern for her, it would be a nice gesture. But whatever she does about it will really be her own decision.

I really have no experience in this kind of thing, though, I'm just pointing out something that I think makes sense.

She isn't hurting herself, right?

I've got my own arm because I was bored, about a month ago. It gives a person something to do.

Just let her be, if she wants to play with razors, then don't try and force her not to.

Yes chicken,I have told her many many times that I really care for her and I don't like her doing it.It tears me up inside when I see her with the marks on her leg.I tell her to like think of other ways to stop her depression, like just call me up for instance. The problem is that i'm really falling hard for this girl and this is gonna be something that crushes me inside when I see her leg afterwards.

The other night i cut my arm up bad. Idk know what my motive was. I had a lot of rage and needed to take it out. At first when i was cutting, it was hurting, but it stopped hurting quickly. Then as i saw the blood, it made me feel better. Why? I have no idea.

I can say that it doesnt look good to have cuts on your body. I also agree that its not the best thing to do. What i would suggest is that you try to ask her what is causing her to be depressed and you help her work that out. Come up w/ an alternative to cutting w/ her. Be very involved with her as well, but dont go too far as to annoy her.

Cutters really hurt others more than it does them. It's not that they don't 'love' their significant others, it's just that they can be very detached and self piteous, so they medicate themselves. It'd be a sick feeling, the opiates and all, probably like adrenalin that calms instead of races. That's screwed

Tell her that you really like her, but cannot love her because of what she does to herself, because it cuts you deeper than it does her.

She might be addicted to this kind of thing, so whether or not she chooses to stop entirely depends on her. Don't plan fantastical rescues; -they don't work.

Cutting is a not good. It should be delt with very seriously. People who cut don't know how to deal with their emotinal pain so they cut themselves to feel better.Talk to her about it,tell her if she doesn't get help you'll get it for her. Sounds shady but needs to be done.

Well i don't know if it's as drastic as everyone is making it out to be. It's certainly part of a spectrum, which at it's mildest is how it is now: a troubled teen doing mild self mutilation, and at the extreme end of this spectrum is the Borderline Personality type who swallows a bottle of pills, knowing it probably won't kill them, just to get your attention ("Deliberate Self Harm").

If the cause is lonliness, frustration, feelings of inadequacy, of being unable to change her present situation, then it will probably disappear on its own the more she spends time with a stable person in happier circumstances, and someone who lets her be in control.

If the cause is to attract attention, or due to a personality problem, then it will either not change, or even get worse if too much attention is brought to it.
