Birth control
I dislike the condom and want my girlfriend to go on the pill, but she thinks she'll get fat if she goes on the pill. Does the pill make you fat? Are there different kinds of birth control pills? Basically she doesnt want to get he pill or even ask a doctor about it at this point or anything, so I'd like to learn a bit about the pill so I can bust out some facts on her and stuff. Anyone?

Re: Birth control
Start here (http://www.plannedparenthood.org/bc/) and scroll down. Click on any of the methods you'd like to know more about.
Express link for the pill. (http://www.plannedparenthood.org/bc/YOU_AND_PILL.HTM)
I urge young people to consider depo-provera since it takes the "user error" factor out of the equation.

Re: Birth control
it won't make her fat.... she might gain 3 pounds or so, but she won't get fat. most of it will go to her boobs anyways. so it's all good.

Re: Birth control
no, itll make her gain weight. It made me gain about ten-fifteen pounds, and i ddint drop them till i got off it. it sucked, because it doesnt go to your boobs. it goes straight to the stomach.

Re: Birth control
Some women have weight gain and emotional problems from the pill, others don't. AFAIK there's no way to know what it will to do a specific woman unless she tries it.
Aside from the pill, there's also the patch, the implant, and the shot. All three of these typically have more side effects, but some women are lucky and don't have any at all.
The only beneficial side effect I've heard of is a reduction/elimination of acne in some younger women. In some cases it works so well that dermatologists actually prescribe the pill for that very purpose. Weird, huh?

Re: Birth control
How long does the pill take to be in effect from first use? I thought it was 2 months but I never knew for sure...

Re: Birth control
You know what else will make her get fat? GETTING PREGNANT!!!
The great sex will make up for the weight gain. Trust me. The pill takes about a months to become fully effective and should be taken every day at the same time (i.e. 12:00pm).

Re: Birth control
Deadlycindy's right. Look the stuff up on planned parenthood. Or you can call them and ask to talk to a physician, phone consultations are free. Ask them to mail you any pamphlets so your gf can read it for herself. Ortho McNeil (http://www.ortho-mcneil.com/) will also send you four and a half tonnes of literature if you email them to ask for it.
The pill can make you gain weight or lose it, it depends on the person. Same for mood swings.
The textbook answer is it takes a week for the current pills to take effect (taken properly).
If you're pressuring her to go on the pill because you want to have better sex, you should consider the cost, 'remembering to take the pill' and mood swing factors. Don't expect her to pay for the pills herself even if it is a chick thing. The initial ob-gyn exam also costs a good chunk of change, needs to be done annualy, and if she's nervous about pills, the ob-gyn's office isn't exactly a happy fun place.

Re: Birth control
Well you have 3 choices....
1.female condom,more efficient than a male condom,less noticable.
2.day after pills, you have 72 hours to take after unprotected sex
3.stick with the condoms or else get her knocked up.
