Talking about problems
My girl is sort of bi polar I think....she explains her as being perfectly happy one minute and sad and depressed the next. I told her I think she is bi polar probably even though I dont know much about the disorder.
She will never talk to me about her problems, the problems that make her smoke pot to get rid of them for the few hours the drug is in effect. She tells me that she hates explaining her problems to people and I asked why, and she jsut said I dont know. I asked her to go to a nice restaurant with me in a few days, and she tells me that she cant go into most restaurants because she feels like she doesnt belong. Ok....so why dont you feel like you dont belong I ask, and she says I dont know, I just feel weird. Ok....so well what do you mean you feel weird, use another word other than weird, and she keeps saying I dont know. What does this sound like? How can I get her to be more comfortable with telling me her problems because I want to understand her more mostly because we are from pretty different backgrounds. Thanks for the help.

Re: Talking about problems
If you are 100% sure you love her, and not just like her, stick with her, help her find treatment, and be prepared for a tough fucking relationship. I was lucky enough to have a temporary manic-depression; lasted three years and completely fucked my life up, but it's done with now. The suicidal depression and reasonless euphoria are gone and I have control again...it's permanent with most people though, and the treatment isn't 100% effective either, but it does stem the problem and limit its callousness.
If you just 'like' her though, get out before it ruins your life.

Re: Talking about problems
Sometimes when you're going through tough times and it's taking awhile to pass through it you can reach a point where there is just no reason to talk anymore... you've talked and it hasn't changed a damn thing, you just give up.
Just be patient though, you don't need to dive into this head-first. Take it nice and slow and get to know about her issues gradually, otherwise the situation could spin out and you end up in the middle of a mess.

Re: Talking about problems
Don't be so direct about these issues. Just don't bring them up for now. Find something you can do and can talk about. Once you establish the right amount of rapport and she is in the right mood, she may open up on her own. Trying to pry her open may drive her away.

Re: Talking about problems
Here's a tip: leave the psychological diagnosis of your girlfriend to a professional. Speaking of which, get her some help if you really think that she has a mental disorder.

Re: Talking about problems
sounds like she has major problems and like hexadecimal said, if you have been together long enough try and get her to see some one and get diagnosed and then be prepared for a long and rough ride.
I was with a guy that had a mental illness for two years and when it was good it was great but wen he was off medication it was real tough, not only on him and me but our friends and family as well.
it takes a hell of a lot out of you, more than you think.
