Default Prostitution: Who's exploiting who?

Discuss.

Guys: What would you think if you found a woman who seemed normal and intelligent, but when you started coming on to her, she flashed you a sly smile and whispered, "Sure, but what's in it for me?" What if she'd be willing to give you her body, no emotional strings attatched, for money/drugs/etc? What would you think of her?

Ladies: Would you ever make pleasure a business venture? Why or why not? Which is more sordid: Giving sex away for free or getting paid?

People who use the term "exploiting" often just have an agenda. Unless you are talking about kids, all's fair.

I have heard a theory that laws against prostitution are there to keep most women from charging as opposed to some moral issue, but I dunno.

I have not seen one myself, but I have a married friend who does all the time. Sometimes he picks up chicks for free, but since he has a wife, he thinks that paying for it is easier with a lot less drama. He probably has a point.

If the moral majority outweighed the puritan religious zealots it would be legal, as long as it could be taxed.

Default Re: Prostitution: Who's exploiting who?

Most of the men I know who have employed prostitutes seem to agree that they're not so much paying for sex as they are paying for sex with a desirable woman who will leave afterward. No muss, no fuss.

Seeking money/goods in exchange for sex is a lot harder than it seems, and damn complicated and dangerous. One would either need connections, or be so addled and desperate they didn't care if they lived or died.

Though, I suppose sometimes a person could just "fall" into a prostitute-like situation without really realizing it. For example, there was this one entertainer who I got to be "fuck buddies" with about 10 years ago. But he would always come bearing gifts: an eighth of bud, some sort of souvenir from his performances, and some other goodie like chocolates or CDs. It got to be that he expected sex when we "got together" and I expected "gifts" though I convinced myself I was just thrilled to be fucking someone semi-famous. Meh.

tho it would be an interesting way to make money, this lifestyle tends to be frowned upon by society, tho personally i see nothing wrong with not wanting/needing an emotional attachment but still taking care of physical desires.

my two cents.

I suspect that many prostitues are selling their bodies to pay for expensive drug habits, not because they enjoy sex and like meeting new people.

Doesn't sound so glamorous any more, now does it?

its not that hard to hook up with a pro if you want one. There are adds in the paper and most people, especially taxi drivers know where the brothels are...

ive thought about the 'easy' money, but have friends who do, they say that after a while it feels like all they are worth as people is the cash they get paid...... good points and bad i suppose...

I am an entertainer, so I work with many dancers who some of you might think of as "prostitutes", or "call-girls". or "mistresses". The ones I know are VERY selective, and make a LOT of money as GIFTS men VOLUNTARILY give them.

The girls I respect are the ones who will never do a guy JUST for the money......Or maybe a better way to put it is that they don't accept a client who offers them money, unless they would have done him for nothing!!

Seems like that's pretty much like any other girl would do under the same circumstances. Love, Venus.

Most girls who are out there selling themselves have to.

No, it's not glamorous, but they are also not necessarily rushing out to spend their money on drugs. There are plenty of other situations that occur where it is their only means of survival.

My Mama kicked me out of the house when I was 12. After a few weeks of living on the streets, I got sick of begging off of strangers, and decided to sell myself. I was fairly devoloped for my age but still looked like a little girl so I made some good money. I spent the money I made on food, sleeping bag, etc.

Do I wish I hadn't had to do it? Of course. But at the time that is what it came down to, and I don't regret doing what I had to do.

I think its the other way round. The guys that go there are the ones paying for it.

Hookers are the respectable one as they are being paid.

Doesnt really make sense but in a way i admire the hookers for doing it just like any othr job as it is in a way.

Really when you get right down to it, what is the difference between selling your body for sex, or selling your body to a football team, or selling your body for medical experiments (not the ones where you are dead, ones where you test a medication etc).

Maybe it is because I'm on the liberal side, but my opinion is to let them do it if they want. I mean every company is exploiting their workers (for their ideas, or their ability to turn a wrench, or land a plane), and every worker is exploiting the company for money (pretty communistic, waiting for Karl Marx to post here next lol)

(typical Shiantar long post below ...)

quote:when you started coming on to her, she flashed you a sly smile and whispered, "Sure, but what's in it for me?"

If she were to say, "what's in it for me?" I'd probably be puzzled over what she was trying to obtain, but I'd probably also be a little impressed that she had the guts to stand up and demand her fair share. I really feel sorry for those women who have so little self esteem that they think they have to throw out sex as a welcome mat -- they're selling themselves short.

quote:What if she'd be willing to give you her body, no emotional strings attatched, for money/drugs/etc?

Well, the problem is that prostitution, according to the broadest of definitions, truly is the world's oldest profession. Sex which is traded for consideration or even given freely in the reasonable hope of consideration later, is technically a form of prostitution, even though we only recognize the old "sex traded for legal tender" as being the form of pressing importance.

I think one of the reasons that sex-for-money is illegal in most places is because money is the only freely exchangeable, portable form of wealth we've got.

I mean, in the olden days, a woman wouldn't attempt to prostitute herself to a serf who happened to be running a pig farm because he'd have nothing of any value to offer her (except, perhaps, a roof over her head and a meal in her belly, if she needed either).

Likewise, modern prostitutes don't like to trade sex for commodities unless they're portable and can represent substantial, concentrated wealth on a pound for pound basis (like drugs, as was mentioned). If they can obtain either, they can use the proceeds to better their circumstances.

-->I wouldn't have sex with a woman who would be willing to trade her body for money or commodities as mentioned above. Not for moral reasons -- for practical reasons: Prostitutes are that much more vulnerable to contracting STDs because they (can) have a wider variety of sexual partners who, arguably, have a predisposition to promiscuity.

quote:What would you think of her?

I wouldn't think anything more or less of her, if that's what you mean. If you've got something to sell, you're comfortable with selling it, and are willing to accept the risks and the responsibilities of doing it, then I don't think it's my place to stop you.

I mean, we all have to eat, right?

I don't have anything against prostitution so long as it doesn't cause a pressing social problem that the rest of society has to handle.

I mean, here in Canada, where we've got 'free' health care, I look with distaste at smokers and alcoholics alike -- they cost the rest of the taxpaying population a lot of money every year. If prostitution could be demonstrated to cause excess delinquency, an explosion of HIV cases, or otherwise de-stabilize society, I'd be in favor of making it illegal.

However, from what I've seen thus far, it would be better to legalize it and regulate it by taxation and legislation. At the very least, it would probably close that 'gender income gap' that people are always complaining about.

--------------

BTW, since I'm all for gender-equality, I'm going to answer the questions below anyway, and thumb my nose at the assigned order of questions. Ha!

quote:Would you ever make pleasure a business venture? Why or why not?

For the health reasons I listed above, I'm disinclined to sell myself for money unless that was my absolute, absolute last resort of finding money to survive. I mean, I've been told that I'm cute and that I do it well, but that doesn't mean it's to be done.

quote:Which is more sordid: Giving sex away for free or getting paid?

It's not the pay that makes it sordid -- it's the circumstances which make it sordid.

Hell, I've got a pretty good thing going right now where this woman and I trade sex, affection, feelings, sleeping arrangements, common interests, and the occasional dinner at a restaurant, everything tit for tat. Technically that's prostitution for both of us, but it's far from sordid -- one might describe it as a loving relationship.

If you're going to indulge in sordid sex by hauling a random guy home from the bar or by picking up a random girl, and you think you could also get money out of the situation, why not?

Default Re: Prostitution: Who's exploiting who?

Um... why is this all focused on women prostitutes? There are male prostitutes... and no they are not all gay.

People resort to prostitution as their career because of a couple things. One, they don't have the same sex (father or mother) influence, and therefore don't know how they could really be treated or what love really is. Or, their mom or dad is or was one, so therefore they think that is all they can ever be.

Ever think of what kind of STDs these men and women carry? I mean... they have slept around alot and surely they aren't going to tell the person who is paying them for sex to put on a condom or, in a males sense, use a condom. The patch, pill, etc don't help prevent STDs... yet anyway.

Married couples are married couples. They shouldn't be paying people for sex when they have a spouse that they supposedly "love." It just shows how little some people put into relationships.

I find prostitution degrading to the men and women that are giving and recieving it, but, maybe its a last resort for them, or maybe they really don't have the self-steem to think they can do anything better (as stated before.) It's a way to get by, its better then being a bum I guess.

I don't really see what the big deal is with prostitution (other than tax stuff). Is being a professional roofer a bad thing? You're doing someone a service in exchange for money. If you loved the person, you would probably roof the house for free. Someone tell me how fucking a guy and putting shingles on his house are any different.

BECAUSE SEX IS NOT THE SAME AS CATCHING A PASS OR FUCKING WRITING A PAPER!!!

And if you're one of the sad and few that consider sex such a common task then you should at least have respect for the risks that are involved with the action and anyone that really respected themselves wouldn't put that much at risk for something that is as meaningless as turning a crank or painting a fence.

Difference between sluts and whores: sluts do it for either their own pleasure or because they are stupid and easily manipulated and whores do it for either greed or addiction. Any way you hack it, just thinking about how someone can use their body as such a worthless piece of equipment makes me goddamn sick. Fucking worthless.

That, or you're a douchebag. If the chick would be having that much sex anyway, so she decides to make money off of it, that's just being smart. Or even if she wouldn't be having that much sex anyway, why the hell shouldn't she? These risks you speak of only apply if they don't use a condom. They're still kind of present if they do, but the chances of getting pregnant or getting an STD through a piece of latex are pretty slim. Besides, you could get killed washing windows, and you would make way less money doing it

Edit: so really it just comes down to you holding your values above everyone else's for no reason other than that they're your values. What are you, Christian or something? You make me sick

That's a really good idea, the taxing - then it would have to be a state or federal thing, which would have requirements, which would cut down on STD's and other stuff. Prostitution should be legalised.

For all you guys on your high horses, since when have you had sex for purely noble reasons? Sure you were in love, but have you ever fell in love with a nice intelligent fat ugly girl? We are all motivated by our base instincts. If a girl wants to do a guy because she gets pleasure from the act, or gets pleasure from what he can provide directly, or indirectly; what is the real difference? I will tell you what it is. We lie to ourselves. We like to think our actions are noble and our love is pure, when really everyone jumps thru hoops for the same stupid reasons like Pavlov’s dog. When someone is a bit too open about it, we backlash out of our own insecurity because if we do not try to draw a distinction between them and us, we will have to stop lying to ourselves and the illusion ends. She is the whore only in it for the pleasure of money but we really have feelings for the cute girl who seems nice because she smiled and we don't know anything not nice about her. Our base pleasure is not a tangible currency so it is okay unlike that whore we judge.

Great post, EasyGoing -- (More about Pavlov's Dog later)!!!

And to all you strident guy crusaders against these girls, I have 3 questions (I'll even answer them for you):

1.

(Q) Who do you think are their clients?

(A) Some GUY (likely a guy just like you---or maybe even YOU, if not today, someday? You said "NO" TOoooo fast!!! (hee hee)!!

2.

(Q) Did any of these girls ever FORCE you to give them anything?

(A) Never happens, I think!

3.

(Q) WHY do YOU GUY'S "trade" with THEM?

(A) For lots of reasons....the same reasons, maybe, that you go to the best barber in town -- because he or she has the best product and services you the best, and the door is almost always open; or maybe for the same reason you watch the "Man Show" instead of "Nightline"....because it's more exciting. Or, name your reason, 'cause I'm sure there are many more.

One of the reasons may be that you want a simple, uncomplicated, uncluttered, yet satisfying no-name experience with someone who is available, will do what you want, when you want, and then get out of your life.....and she probably looks like a model compared to the girls you usually wrestle with!! (hee hee)!!

Love, Venus

PS: When EasyGoing gave the analogy of "Pavlov's dog", it reminded me of a saying, which may be yet another reason some of you guys trade with these so called "prostitutes"......"EVERY DOG GOES TO HEAVEN"!!! (hee hee) L.V.

Don't people see their bodies as more than a lucrative shell? Isn't sex more than just a way to get off or get money? I am, of course, using my own ideals and morals to base all of my arguments on, and I believe that prostitution is the lowest level that a person can set on their bodies. I supposed not their bodies so much as their sex.

Maybe I'm just being critical because sex acutally means something to me and it just makes me sick to think of how someone can stoop so low in their respect for it to sell it to whomever on the street.

Besides, I'm sure that the majority of prostitutes are drug addicted and are forced into the lifestyle by their pimps/drug dealers.

I don't think any higher of the men that go to see hookers than I do the hookers themselves.

And yes, I do consider myself a Christian. I'm deffinitely no bible thumper, but my upbringing does affect many of my ideals. So sue me.

As Glitter suggested, what's the difference between a person charging fees for sexual favors, and a doctor charging fees to administer a breast exam? Or a dentist a teeth cleaning? Or an auto tech a lube job? All these people make a living charging fees for services rendered.

I realize doctors put forth an extraordinary effort and go through a lot of schooling to become doctors, but essentially, if you can't pay their fee, they won't provide services. Without proper medical care, people die from undiagnosed (or too-late diagnosed if they have to rely on community clinics and overworked medical staff) conditions. Thus doctors become doctors so they can capitalize off human illness. Isn't that far less noble and far less "Christian"?

Not really, no.

My body is just a vessel for my mind and spirit. It is a piece of meat for me to do with as I please. Of course, that also means It's my responsibility to maintain and take care of it by making safe choices.

To answer Moon's question posed earlier in this thread, I've been thinking a lot about this subject because I've never really enjoyed sex. This is pretty frustrating because my body has an instinctual memory of what it *should* feel like, but it's never happened that way. My body is designed by millions of years of evolution to 1) arouse men and 2) shit out children by the dozens. I have no desire to follow evolutionary goal #2, but it seems arrogant to avoid both evolutionary directives. To avoid sex is to avoid life. Fertility and creation are the basis of every major world religion. If this is the path I must follow, I might as well get something out of it.

I don't think sex has anything to do with love. My closest relationships have always been platonic ones.

And, just to lend weight to the "only dirty junkies would debase themselves" theory, I just moved to a knew city and don't know any dealers. The black markets I'm most interested in are populated by the most skittish, easily spooked dealers/cooks imaginable. In order to be recognized as a non-law-enforcement-employed citizen, I'm going to have to have more on the bargaining table than just cash.

Gee, Schraff, that do be weird. Of recent you

posted about having lots of typical Shard-Sex

I would think if having such marathon sessions, didn't turn you on, you must be serious.

Didn't you say *5 hours to cum*?

Are you sure you didn't whip yer Kundalini into such an altered state, that you can't recall how good it actually was? Or something

I can somewhat dig having basically non emotional sex. The deeper a relationship, the

more sex is often not about sex, but all the other stuff between the couple. This often & often fucks up the whole sexual deal.

* The homicidial bitchin'

That goes down in every kitchen

Over who will serve &

Who will eat *

Hey, look at me. I didn't want to start kindergarten because I knew I was too emotionally fucked up. I needed to work on my

shit...but I never f'n bothered.

It's not too late. Just mostly.

(2 outta 10 of those books?! Aw, poor baby).

I dont know if this has been mentioned yet, but guys almost always end up paying for their sex in some way or another. If its dinner and movies or just paying some slut for head.

I admire prostitutes, most women are whores but pro's can get to the point without all the fucking around. =P

Heh, good catch. I've experienced sexual pleasure on meth, but not really when other people were involved. It always seemed to go wrong. My sexual experiences have ranged from dull and anticlimatic (with women)to traumatically degrading and anticlimatic (with men).

For the record, I've only had heterosexual sex with one person, one night. That's how I contracted Hep C.

Ugh, this is depressing.

I hear Hep-C is hard to transmit sexually. It

is not impossible though, just unlikely. You were never a bad spike-sharer, were you?

I take it you have believed a Real Woman can handle herself? The question, of course, is how much should she handle herself?

Of course, ol' DJ said how some folks should never have any kind of sex. Though as a possibly imaginary fellow...

Never. My points were my own. I'm 97% sure.

No protection was used that night. My ex-roommate had left a drawer full of condoms behind, but whenever I started to reach for them he'd refuse. I never said no because he was an gulf war vet and could have very easily killed me. I was too high to care too much. I just lay there, looking away, hoping he'd be done soon so he would just leave...

So I can really only assume that's what sex with men is like. I don't have anything else to go on.

quote: I take it you have believed a Real Woman can handle herself? The question, of course, is how much should she handle herself?

Heh, cute. I try to keep from getting too depressed by cramming my day full of activity- I sign up for as much overtime as I can at work, I clean, I balance my checkbook, I read voraciously, I do volunteer work. I wonder if I'm redirecting my energy or just hiding from the issue...

I don't think I'll ever have the chance to sex again. I'm too tainted. Having a bloodborn disease changes how you think. Wherever my blood is, my sickness is. It's in my heart. It's in my brain. It's in my hands and my tongue and my eyes. If I found someone as dirty as me it would be different, but most tweakers give me the creeps.

<reads what she just wrote>

Sheesh. I'm practically outangsting Infra here.

***edit: so what does this have to do with the original topic? I could, potentially, see myself having sex as a business transaction, but not if there was any emotion involved. Guys who have emotions tend to go towards the innocent, fluffy, clean girls that would love to get married and bear them children. That's not me.

Sex doesn't mean much to a lot of people anymore--have you read Cosmo? They have a section where women admit to "dirty deeds" etc, and so many of them start with picking up some random guy and taking him home for a nice fuck. If it's not going to mean anything to the person engaging in it, then why not get paid for it? I'm not saying I agree with it, but it makes sense to profit from it the most if you can and will.

^^^ Exactly. When the *shit* hits the fan or

it's just time to buy a house together, just walk up to someone in the supermarket or bar.

They're nice lookin'? Buy the house with them

Sex is as important as any other aerobic exercise, but as long as you get your needed amount, it doesn't matter who/what with. You won't neccessarily talk to just anyone, but why not let just any nice looker inside you?

Everyone knows that nice looks/smile means a nice honest person. If such a person wants to

have sex with you, sell you a car or borrow money: say YES, of course.

They look nice, say nice things? Do whatever they say, you know you must. You must.

Actually, I find this attitude horrifying. Maybe I'm just shockingly uptight,. The way I see it, there are three different kinds of (consensual) sex:

1) Sex within the confines of a loving relationship, usually monogomous. Sex is a way of showing love (or the desire to shit out children, whatever). Sex is more than what it appears to be. It's the closest two souls can get.

2) Sex by two anonymous people as a business transaction, be it for dope or money. The buyer gets sexual pleasure, the seller gets cash or whatever they need. It's a win-win situation.

3) Casual sex for the sake of sex. One night stands, etc.

It must be the Scorpio in me, but I find the third option way, way too frivolous. I'm always a little shocked and embarrassed when my contemporaries grind against people they barely know on the dance floor. Nobody is just meat- we all have personalities, dreams, hopes, desires. How can someone shut off that realization and just use another human being as, more or less, a blow-up doll who happens to have a pulse?

What makes the third option different from the second option? The second is about business. Business is something I understand. In business, there are agreements, conditions, and outcomes. It's clean cut. No grey areas. It makes more sense to me than the third option. But hey, maybe it's just me.

Actually, when I become palpably aware that I'm a "mark," it's like being dumped in a bucket of ice water. I've been a scamee too many times, and I'm too old to fall for it.

I wuz being ironic. I wonder about sex for

money in terms of non-STD disease transmission. A lot of people don't like to travel by public transport, even airliners, because of bugs.

There, mostly it's shared air, though there is some touching of *already touched* stuff.

I wonder if being sexual with someone for a short time is better or worse for: colds/flu

smallpox/strep/bubonic/salmonella/TB etc?

I know that outside the developed world that the use of condoms is less common. This is too bad for those involved, but good for an overpopulated planet. Personally, I think that every species has it's diseases that it

fights. People need disease, too, to keep them in check.

As a promiscuous (sometimes) person myself, I

do worry some. They don't test for everything

when they test you for STD's. So, I don't know if I have Hep B/C. No HIV, last time I was tested, though.

Epstein/Barr or Herpes6? Don't know, they don't test.
