Default does anyone really know?

so i've had friends ask me this before, to help with their own situation and it happened again recently. they asked me what my definition of love was.

i dont think i have a definition. just figured i'd know when it happened.

what i'm wondering is, does anyone think they have a definition of love? is it even possible to have a definition?

A deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities, or a sense of underlying oneness.

Love is one of those "you know it when you see it" things. I have yet to come up with a satisfactory definition.

I thought this thread in Humanities was interesting, though: http://www.totse.com/bbs/Forum31/HTML/001739.html

How about we define what love isn't?

I believe the King Missile song "Love Is..." sums it up pretty nicely:

Love is beautiful

Like birds that sing

Love is not ugly

Like rats

In a puddle of vomit

Love is beautiful

Like the sunshine

And the dancing wind

Love is not ugly

Like puss

And lice

And tobacco snot

Love is beautiful

Love is beautiful

Like all the little animals

In a forest full of green

That smells like pine

And wonder

Love is not invisible brain control

And pain

And malicious intent

And lying all the time

Although it can be all of these things

And more

Love is a many splendoured thing

It is not a shipload of slaughtered pigs

Rotting and festering

In the bleating desert

Love is what love is

And love is not

What love is not

Trying to describe a feeling is like trying to describe a pitch. We have a word for each sound, we might even know them when we hear them, but there's no way to describe them in terms of anything but sound.

There's nothing wrong with love itself, it's what people with the chemicals that's erroneous.

As is every other emotion that we feel, so what difference does it make? The biology of it is not what's important, the fact that we can feel it is.

Love is more then a sum of it's chemical parts.

As for the dictionary definition, do we have a definition of kinship?

I'm in love and theres no way I can put it into words. Making love is an almost accurate metaphore, but you'll only understand when making love in love. It is something you (As in "I" couldn't) even begin to grasp until I felt it.

Would you care to justify your position, or are you going to simply let a flame stand without evidence against the sum total of human biochemical knowledge?
