Major Differences of opinion.
Alright, this might sound lame to some, but i dont much care.
I just recently started going out with this girl. We ve been going out for around a week, and we just got into our first real arguement. Personally i dont think its something very small, she kind of just shakes it off. Anyways, shes really conservative, Christian, Im not, im really open-minded very liberal in my thinking. We got into a discussion about homosexuals as well as abortion, basically we were just seeing where each other standed on the situations.
We get to homosexuals, and i find out shes a complete homophobe(sp?), she even more or less disowned her best friend b/c she found out she was bi. I personally find this appalling, and i tried to talk to her about it. She got majorally defensive, and thought i was trying to trash her whole religion. That wasnt what i was intending, but now we arent exactly doing so well. Im gonna let things settle til morning, and then see what happens.
Basically, what im asking is, do you peoples think its worth trying to make a relationship where two polar opposites exist work? I really dig this chick, but i think the whole Christian thing vs my whole non-religious deal is gonna put too much tension on the relationship. And if i should abandon this relationship before we invest too much into it, what would be the best way to do so, with the intent of staying friends?

Re: Major Differences of opinion.
the religion will put a difference in most of your thinking or right and wrong and of society.
umm that was something. me and my ex are both christians and when we dated we had a big arguement about gays..personally, i think its wrong and i look down about it, but not upon the person, im not a homophobe and stay away form gays. but my ex was allll for marriage and everything and i just didnt feel we should give them that power. first off think of their kids. oh i saw daddy having butt sex. we dont need little gay kids running around.
but umm see how things work out, its true opposites do attrach so wait it out.

Re: Major Differences of opinion.
Opposites can definitely attract. It depends on the strength of your magnetism. If other areas of your relationship are positive and desirable the religion aspect can be set aside, unless she's very committed, then you might face some trouble.
It's kind of a crap shoot... we here at totse don't know the ins and outs of your collective personalities. My guess is that both of you will bend to make things work. If that's the case, and you don't push athiest beliefs on her, and she doesn't stuff God down your throat.. it's workable.
Here (in the US) just very recently a lady was acquitted for bashing in her kids skulls with a rock, because God told her to. She'll be admitted to a psychiatric hospital but she was fucking acquitted. What does that tell you about overzealous religious fanatics? It tells me volumes. Religion is a crutch and an outdated concept, but people will believe what they're taught and call it faith and continue teaching because most people on this planet are followers, not leaders.
Most everyone wants to believe there's 'something' greater than ourselves happening out there but some of us want proof (scientific) and cannot simply accept what someone wrote in a 'bible' or 'korahn' <sp> as fact and say to themselves "Oh, you say this is so.. so it must be so."
Without rambling further, maybe you can seek a middle ground. Allow her to believe in her version of existence and she should accept your questioning nature... and talk and explore... it can work if both of you are flexible.

Re: Major Differences of opinion.
"opposites attract" rarely applies to religious ideologies.
If you two can't "agree to diasagree" then the relationship is doomed. Actually, I think it's doomed in any case, since her viewpoint comes from ignorance and blind acceptance, and this may constantly grate on you until it reaches a breaking point.
I'd say cut your losses.

Re: Major Differences of opinion.
Thanks for all the insight, i ll talk to her in the morning and see what happens. Id really like to stay in this relationship, but i really dislike most religion.
As the saying goes "dont have expectations, it hurts less."
Thanks again for your take(s) on the situation.

Re: Major Differences of opinion.
Follow cindy's advice.
Unless the two of you can engage in constructive political debates or can just stay out of the religious/political topics all together, it's not worth trying. Life will be a constant battle.

Re: Major Differences of opinion.
Truthfully, it can and will become a problem. I suggest that you just have fun with this girl. This may sound harsh, but even if you had plans for a serious relationship, it might not work out. People with dramatically different views of the world tend to not bond that well. The thing that makes it worst is that she was raised strictly Christian, and as such seems to be pretty narrow-minded (not really her fault). It'll be hard to make her see things logically.
