Default Why does high school hurt so much?

Does life ever get better?

I'm a 16 year old sophomore, and I dread going to school everyday. The guys have been bullying me constantly. It actually started my very first day freshman year. (I had never been popular in middle school, but it was never as bad as it is now.) I don't see why they hate me so much, as far as I know I have never done anything to any of them. They used to bully me for random stuff. But now their theme is me being a "nerd." They have been bullying me about that ever since one them saw my "high school summary report card." Which showed that I have never gotten anything below an "A" in any class. And no, I have never gone around bragging about this, I always did my best to hide it from everyone for fear they would consider me a "nerd."

I have always done my best to be nice to everyone, I have never seen the point of verbal or physical harassment. I just don't see why I'm hated so much.

Most of the girls are assholes too. Some will point at me and *cough* "pig!" *cough* then start giggling. Once again, As far as I know I never did anything to any of them. I have never had a girlfriend, and desperately want one, but every girl I have ever asked out has turned me down. I'm by no means disfigured, or fat. I have no acne, and have perfect teeth now that my braces are off. I'm not super buff or anything, so I would consider myself average. Why do they like the assholes that treat them like sh#@? I just don't get it. They all like the assholes who are failing school.

What can I do? Does it ever get better? I'm very lonely and depressed.

I blame them liking losers and failures on the rise in black culture. Mostly because all the rappers say that being a bum and sellin' drugs and school fuckin' whack. Or just because black culture is a failure to begin with. Maybe it's because whenevr they see africa on the nature channels they see the shitty parts. They don't show south africa where it is somewhat decent there. So they figure that, that is what their natural culture is like so they make their neighborhood better yet "habitat" into a jungle.

Hey man don't get down, after all, all those jocks and guys that are deemed "cool" now are most likely going to be the ones never to get into a good university, never to achieve anything impressive, and never to make a real impact in society. And as far as I'm concerned, hell I wish I could have a grade summary with no marks below and A. Seriously thats awsome your going to get into a great university and being doing what you want in life. Also I don't exactly know why the girls date and are attracted to all the guys that treat them like shit, but I do know that they'll be digging you later on in life when they realize how much of a bunch of conceded bitches they were in highschool. I live in Canada in a smaller town, so at my highschool theres not alot of making fun of people, its just not seen to be cool. The ones that do make fun of others usually get beat up. But all I can really say, is just from reading what you wrote you seem like a nice guy in an unfortunate situation. Things will get better man, in the real world its better to be smart than some "gangsta" wannabe. I wish you the best of luck with things and keep up the good grades because ultimately they're what will get you away from that place and give you a chance at your dreams.

Peace

No problem man. I'm 17 in grade twelve, so yeah i've been through a lot of the same stuff. Luckily I've always had an "in" with a few people who could kick some ass if need be, so that seems to help. Also maybe if theres any other highschools in your district or near you, you might consider switching? I just switched this year and I definitely have a lot more friends at this school than at my last.

If you have msn or icq or anything like that and would like to have someone to talk to its probably easier over that so just email me or post your number or email.

Of course it gets better! In fact, you're on a collision course with an old cliche: in 10 years you'll have a fabulous career, own your own home, and vacation in the Seychelles with your also nerdy and terribly cute wife.

They'll all be working as telephone soliciters and furniture-store clerks.

Somewhere in your school there have to be at least one or two like-minded individuals. Seek these people out (they're hiding like you are) and ignore the bullies as much as you can.

Yeah, highschool sucks. Well actually I go to a private school and am in all honors classes so highschool doesn't necessarily suck for me. I get along decently with the stupid people aswell. Basically society as a whole sucks.

Cindy, please try to get on very soon would ya?

Cindy, What do the girls see in those asshole guys? Do women also seek out men who abuse them? It would appear to me that they do. Or they abuse the man they are with. Why else would the divorce rate be 50%?

Well if your 16 then you don't have much time left in high school anyway so you should just bear it because as soon as you get out you will be on your way to the top of anywhere you wanna go (judging on your grades). And even though Im a guy Ill try to answer your questions on the girls.

Ok the reason girls like these kind of guys is because they feel like they need to work for their affection. For example, the average Joe, when he wants a woman he feels that he needs to show her everything to get her, to always support her etc. But this is not so, because she wil lthen think ' Ok I know this guy desperately wants me and will do anything for me, so I have that no matter what'. The thing that these dumb jocks do is actually very clever, even though they don't know they are doing it. They treat the women like ' shite ' making her think ' Oh maybe he doesn't like me after all? Whats wrong with me?' Thusly she will try to gain his affection.

SO that is pretty much the basics on how to get a girl. Just let her know you like her and then kinda lose interest, or better yet, pick up an interest in another girl, letting her think that you don't see anything in her anymore, giving her a sense of insecurity and then she will try to 'win you back ' so to speak. Then it's time to make your move.

Maybe it's sleazy or whatever, but you mother fuckers don't judge me on giving advice to someone in need.

I was once in your place, young man...in fact it was in my sophmore year even. Being pushed around by other guys really wasn't a problem because I had a reputation for being able to kick just about anybody's ass...but I couldn't get a girl at all, any girl I liked didn't like me, etc, etc. I was terribly depressed, imagining spending the rest of my life alone. No acne, straight teeth, but on the heavy side (5'10", 210-215 pounds). Summer between sophmore and junior years totally changed me. I won't go into all the details, but I dropped down to 165, went up to 6'0", and got into some things that changed me and made me happy, and made me truly love being alive. Now I'm 17, could care less about a girlfriend (why get tied down in a relationship at 16? you'll realize this soon enough), and every weekend I'm with a different girl (on both nights usually). Give it time and things will get better. I know everyone says this but it is true, have patience.

Worry not, young man ... the common misconception that people have about high school is that it's supposed to be the best time of your life. For the intellectuals and the unpopular this is wrong -- because high school is full of people who are compelled to attend, don't want to attend, and have nothing better to do than treat the experience like one huge social experiment. Those people spin out their time by picking on the unfortunate.

I can guess from your grades that you'd be a prime candidate for attending college or university. If that's the case, bravo!

College is perhaps the antithesis of high school -- it's a place where (well, at least from second or third semester and beyond) everybody is there because they want to be there, because they're mature enough to handle it, and because they want to engage in higher learning.

Most intellectuals and the unpopular find themselves quite at home in college, and go on to do two things quite effectively: Change the world for the better, and make absolutely obscene amounts of money doing it.

So, to be perfectly honest about it, all you have to do is to stick it out for a few more years, get excellent grades and the best shot at a scholarship and recognition in academics, and you'll find yourself given access to where few people can go.

As for the depression -- if it's really getting to you, you can talk to your school counselor(s) or see your doctor about the various kinds of therapy or drugs you can take. They've seen it all before, and they can give you some of the answers you need.

And when you're at the age of 28, heading your own department in a highly successful field of the economy, with oodles of cash and a woman on each arm ... you can look down at the high school losers who are still trying to make ends meet after their third attempt at a fast-food job and their fourth attempt at a reasonable divorce settlement and laugh your ass off.

Like Cindy said, time is on your side!! In about 5 years you'll be the guy the girls are after. If they aren't in prison, or drug rehab, or in some muddy gutter, the dregs who are "winning" now will be taking the bus to work, serving fries at McD's, while you will be driving your vette to college learning how to build bridges or do transplant surgery.

HS girls (and middle school girls too) are notorious for making REALLY bad choices in guys. It's not ONLY because they are temporarily insane and stupid, it's also because they are emotinally immature HS girls. Their growing breasts have left their brains badly undernourished!! (hee hee)!! Love, Venus.

My suggestion is to laugh it all off, right to their face.

They must be getting some reaction out of you, or it would get boring.

Think of something witty to retort with.

I think they are praying on your (I’m guessing) lack of a sense of humor.

I’m not talking about joke they don’t understand, like “Your momma’s so fat, she thought a polypeptide was a fucking toothpaste”, I mean, when shit happens, you have to laugh if off and roll with it.

For example, you accidentally hit your knee on a desk.

The people without a sense of humor will immediately look around to see who saw them get injured, and try to play it off, avoiding embarrassment.

Cool people will just laugh, and keep going like nothing happened.

I think you need to lighten up.

I wasnt the most friendly person to losers at school but I never insulted someone for being intelligent. I just didnt like stupid people (playing pokemon when they 16, saying stupid shit they think is funny but it isnt ect).

If i didnt tell them they were idiots someone else would of anyway.

Just remember Karma's a muther fucker.

They'll get their own.

And as for chicks liking assholes it's usually only the popular girls at school that are like this and once again think of karma. If they dont wake up to themselves they'll end up with assholes along with their 15 kids, their dead end jobs and their home sweet trailer.

Vengence will get you through your remaining years of highschool.

And then theres always high school reunions

I agree with the finding like minded people idea. they do exist. as much as everyone tries to be individual, they arent. strength in numbers is a good way to stay secure. and dont give a fuck about the popular kids who push you around. like many have said you got your life sorted, and your gonna be scoring with all the chicks at uni/college. as for the girls, theyll be pregnant by the time they are meant to be in uni, because they forgot to make their popular boy wear a condom (maybe they aint cool) and then theyll be living off the state. then in 10 years time cruise past in your (insert nice car name) and theyll look at you from the gutter. then you can just smile and give em the one finger salute.

all of that aside, i've always adopted the "i dont give a fuck" attitude when it comes to being pushed around. they look for a reaction. dont give them the pleasure.

The divorce rate is so high because people marry the wrong person, often for the wrong reasons: status, to please parents/peers, becuase they "feel they should be married by xx age", "because all their friends are married", and, mostly, because they're in love with the concept of being in love, not with each other.

well ya know, if you're so desperate to be accepted, maybe start smoking pot. it's extremely fun, it wont totally wreck your grades and you'll be more outgoing. im a sophomore in high school too, and we still have more than 2 years left of it, so it's not like high school's gonna end any time soon...... Smoking pot...lol please don't use that as a way to gain friends.

I don't say that smoking pot is bad, becuase some of my friends smoke pot. I am not going to talk shit to anyone that does.

Does use pot though as an excuse to try and gain friends. You need to talk shit back to the jocks in class. If they say something say something smart back. If you are afraid to get into a fight then I deem you inevitably picked on.

Yes it is true that alot of jocks peak their lives in highschool so the rest of their life all they are doing is remembering good times in highschool.

You need to focus on your goal to getting out of HS and that is it. If the jocks keep bothering you just start being smart to them and making them look stupid. If the girls call you a "pig" I don't know any other reason they would unless you were either fat or looked like a pig.

Any girl that takes shit to a guy that isn't a close friend of yours is a complete bitch and needs to be called on it.

If a girl called me a pig I would call her a bitch right then and there and tell her to shut her fucking mouth.

I guarentee!!! GUARENTEE!! If you say this to someone after they make a remark like that then you are calling them on being a bitch and they will most likely shut up. Most likely I do realize contradicts guarentee but oh well.

i had a friend who started smoking pot regularly in his freshman year, now he can't cum, and failed out of college. Sounds like fun eh?

See wen i was ye olde junior high i was like you, i had a bunch of friends but i got picked on a lot and had good grade and all that shite. Now i talk to whoever i want, without sounding pretentious, i don't really fit in anywhere on the social ladder. I have friends who are jocks, "nerds", track kids (different from jocks), whatever.

The way to get away from all that highschool testosterone bullshit is to realize that first off, their opinions don't make any difference at all since they're going to be making sure you get your fries nice and hot in 10 years or so. Second you have to make them realize that you don't give a shit what they say because they're beneath you, you're not beneath them. Thirdly don't take their shit, but don't respond by violence. If one of them calls you a "fag" persay bite him right back, "Hey good one Hitler, keep up the homophobia." Or if they call you a nerd, "Oh, nerd, harsh." It doesn't even have to be overly clever or convulated just drown them in sarcasm, they won't know what to do because they'll be so unused to you responding.

The reason these kids walk all over you is because you LET them do it. Stand up for yourself and they'll stop giving you shit. I went from being the butt of a ton of jokes to not having anyone have the balls to say anything to me in about 2 years. Be outgoing and friendly with others but don't let them run your life. You might want to post in reinvent yourself too.

By the by, most popular highschool girls are worthless except for a good fuck, don't let it get ya down.

The thing about smoking pot is that such a wide variety of people smoke. If you start hanging around potheads, you will become friends with their friends. Then you will become friends with the friends of the friends. This goes on. Perhaps this isn't the sort of people you want as friends, but it's still something.

The other option that works well is to do a sport or join a club. Even if you are shy, just hanging out with people with similar interests is like an automatic way to get friends.

Or...guns and bombs...

Thanks so much for all your replys, I'm feeling better already. I'm actually going to start concurrent enrollment next year. That is where I go to high school for 4 hours a day and take college classes at a real university. Also, if I take a core high school class in summer school this summer I can actually graduate at the end of my junior year since I already have a lot of extra high school credits. Do you think I should do it? My counselor keeps giving me all these reasons why I shouldn't (I've never been too fond of her.)

Some of her reasons include:

1. I will miss out on the social experience of high school and miss it when I'm older. (that's definitely not going to happen.)

2. She says if I graduate a year early I will not be able to get a scholarship to college. (I have been told by other people whom I trust more that this should not be a problem)

3. I won't be able to put on the cap and gown and walk across the stage with my class. (This doesn't bother me a bit)

Anyway, what do you think? 4 hours of high school a day next year then graduate?

I want to be a medical doctor.

I have read in the replies how the women will be all over me when I'm driving the "insert nice car name here" and making "insert large dollar amount here." That sounds nice and all, but then won't they only be after my money?

You make a good point here, man. Everyone who has replied to your post has ignored this before you pointed it out, and I'll tell you why. They've all been simply spouting off a common stereotype, that all nerds go on to be successful and happy and all of the "cool people"(who are always idiots and academic failures in this steriotypical situation) go on to be fat and ugly and have shitty jobs. This is very optimistic, a little too optimistic for me. My dad has a PhD in Computer Science, but he has almost no friends and is now going into his third marriage.

What if this kid doesn't go on to be successful and happy? He probably will have a good career, but socially will it be much different? I'm sorry, but I cannot agree with your ideas that he should just sit around and do nothing his entire time in High School. Doing nothing to defend yourself against these bullies is very risky. What, you think life is all about getting a good job? You think nothing that happens in High School will affect your life other than academically? What these bastards do to you could scar you and stay with you your entire life.

Hey Man I totally feel for you. In my old high school I was picked on and stuff couldn't keep anymoney on cause I would always end up losing it. First off dont smoke pot or anythign man cause they arnt good people to get to know and a lot of them will bully you when you guys are high. I think maybe get into a sport I got into boxing and it has helped my confidence and generally I think made me nicer. Cause with a sport you have somewhere to go to just take out some agression and whatever. Even if its just a house leage or somethign man its good. pot will just mess you up. Things do look up especially if you keep getting those killer grades cause you will be able to retire early and those guys will be working for you until they die. I know its hard now but things can get better. Man I am going to pray for you I hope things work out.

1. Yes, you will miss out on social experiences, that is if you are into partying, girls, etc.

2. This is not true. Where I live in Texas, you actually get scholarship money for graduating early.

3. Not a big deal.

I'm a junior and go to school until 12 on one day, 3:55 on the other (we're on a block schedule). Next year I only have three classes required to take so I'll only be in school until 12 (if even that) both days. But you shouldn't graduate early, stay in for the next year and just fuck around, have a good time, and make up for all the shitty experiences you've had so far in high school.

And the thing said about smoking pot, I second that motion. Start smoking pot, it shouldn't really affect your grades unless you let it take you over, it won't make you dumber, and it will definitely expand your group of friends to all sorts of people. You'd be shocked who at your school smokes.

I wouldn't graduate early if I were you. I'm technically in the same situation as far as credits go. I have the credits to be a junior right now...

If you truly don't care about social things like prom, and missing out on high school social things, then whatever. But, by graduating early you are kind of automatically isolating yourself. Most of the juniors (or seniors next year) probaly won't be too amiable...and you'd likely feel kind of left out of college life.

Just finish High school, experience it, and then take college when it comes.

EDIT: About smoking weed: I'm not bashing it, but it'll likely promote laziness and reduce your work ethic. Take up a hobby that makes you feel good, and that'll lift your spirits and reduce your worries in the same way as weed.

One word: hormones. I guess I am being a bit Fruedian-minded when I saw that they rule our minds at this age, but I really believe that they do. One of the greatest discoveries that I have made in my young life is that I should not always trust myself.

It sounds a bit crazy, but just think about it. The mind during the teenage years is like a fire in a wireworks market. Shit is flying everywhere and you're confused as hell (with yourself and other people) and you're under all of this stress from school and your parents. It's just insanity.

Break it down. Realize that there are a bunch of chemicals going haywire in your brain that are going to make your heart ache and your head hurt. Use your brain.

Don't let you get to you, because in the end the only thing to fear is fear itself, which is manifested in us.

Back in HS, one of my friends used to get called names and shit like that, but he would have some of the most awesome comebacks.

Bully: Hope you like your computer, you nerd!

Friend of mine: Hope you like your WELFARE CHEQUE!

As for more counter-burns I remember a topic a while back and thought it would be great to post a few of these gems:

quote:

You confront 2 guys who are bad mouthing you. Look at one of them, and whilst pointing to the other you say "I bet that's the closest to a cunt you've ever been". -beany

Dude: You Suck!

Zarf: You swallow.

Dude: My dad is bigger than your dad.

Zarf: Really? When did you get a chance to blow my dad?

Dude: You're gay!

Zarf: No, but keep looking. You'll find a boyfriend sooner or later.

Dude: Motherfucker!

Zarf: How did you know I was fucking your mother?

Dude: What? No comeback?

Zarf: If I wanted my come back, I'd scrape the back of your throat.Moron: Are you trying to get smart with me?

You: No, then we would have nothing at all in common.

Well Falcon01, I seem to have finally found one who shares my level intellect, although I am still trudging through the hellhole known as high school. My grades rarely drop below A+ standard and by many I was labelled a nerd. Now I must stress the WAS in that statement, because as of late I have invested much of my time into the noble art of Body-Building, thriving on the advice of Francesco Casteno himself (via e-mail and registration to his personal website). My physical transformation has been incredible - evolving from everything considered 'nerdish', to possibly the fittest and most athletically active student on campus. I rarely find these deluded 'jerks' sniggering in the corridors as I grace them with my presence, but instead actually attempting to avoid me. On a final note, study a martial extensively, my choice happened to be kick-boxing and the benefits just keep rolling in.

Good luck Comrade, it's a treacherous and at best a pain in the ass road to trudge down, but when you get there the results are more than worth your while.

If you don't have any friends you'd miss, then graduating early can be worth it. The only other thing to consider is if you have classes that are advanced enough? Like Calculus, and AP classes. If you stayed for a senior year you could drop 8 AP tests, which would be pretty impressive to a college. Also, I'm not certain what really good schools would think of you only taking three years. If you don't have those advanced classes, they might not consider you prepared for the rigors of their college. SO look into that too.

Someone said that weed will make you lazy... or other wise known as amotivational syndrome.

While this does have some truth to it, it all depends on wether or not you make a habit of it or not. If you have a good work ethic now, you will have a good work ethic later, even if you do smoke weed.

Its by all means your choice though, weed can be good or bad, depends on the person.

but don't do that shit to fit in, the guy who said that is a dumbass.

As far as everything else... I definately feel for you. Sucks that you go to that kind of highschool. I got lucky, mine is nothing like that. The only people that get treated like shit are people that actually deserve it. I guess that is pretty rare though.

Graduating early is no big deal. If high school is bothering you really bad, I say go for it. From what I hear your pretty much already isolated from the "in" crowd anyway, so what does it matter? You can still go to parties and graduation parties if you have friends.

Life definately gets better. You will find that life is nothing like highschool, at all. Things that are important to most of them now: as in clothes, popularity, who is fucking who, the "in" crowd, that shit won't matter when your out in the real world. Statistically you are more likely to succeed than all of those other punks.

And not all women are after money. Maybe a majority, but not all of them. you'll find the right person, just takes time.

I personally didn't lose my virginity till I was a senior in highschool... which is this year actually. All I have to say is, meh, you not missing much. I wouldn't touch most of those snotty bitches anyway.

I was pretty depressed myself throughout highschool, to the point of getting put in a psych ward for a couple of months. it gets better my friend, it really does...

Dude, it will get better. You're going though a phase everyone goes through and will get past it. Everyone except the popular jocks/cheerleaders who end up fat and disgusting and can't land a fuck in their wettest dreams after high school.

Most likely you'll be the successful type that blossoms out in the later years and becomes who the popular ones in HS strive for when you become the one who can pick & choose.

Bill Gates was a nerd. Now he's the richest man on the fucking planet.

Getting a girlfriend may seem hard now, but perseverence (a word your jock counterparts will undoubtedly be having to look up in a dictionary) will pay off. Find yourself a geeky cokebottle glasses girl for now.. experiment with relating.. it'll pay off later.

Bottom line is you've got a hell of a lot more going for you judging by your attitude, spelling and presentation of your feelings than 75% of the dumbasses posting here.

Thank you all for so many replies.

Curious, what were your social/academic, high school/college experiences like?

Is college a lot better than high school structure wise? Other than the people, the one thing I hate most about high school is having to go to a class and sit for an hour, or watch a Disney movie because the teacher was too lazy to show up, or is out coaching. I also dislike having to sit and stare at the wall after I finish a test. I wish they would let me leave and do something productive.

The teachers and security guards herd us around like cattle. Is it far better in college?

Girls go after a good provider. In High school, the things that can be provided are all fucked up. Not only is th main asset popularity, it's also completely arbitrary as to who's popular.

When you have a job making good money and they're bagging groceries, you'll be laughing out of one side of your mouth while making out with some hot chick with the other.

In any case, what you need is confidence. Don't take shit from people. When they try to start some shit next time, just say "Look buddy, I'm sick of your shit. What the fuck did I do to you? Nothing? Why don't you just fuck right off?" Then for everything else he says, you need to come up with a crushing response, which requires a pretty quick wit.

I personally got by with my reputation for insanity and flipping out on people when they pushed me too far. Now, people who don't like me don't bother me, and my confidence and sense of humour allows me to have a good lot of friends.

I'd like to know how you respond to insults though. Don't ignore it or put your head down about the stuff or anything, the trick is to nonchalantly brush it off. Instead of saying nothing, you need to acknowledge that they're speaking to you, while also conveying that you don't care. Next time they insult you, just keep walking, maybe slow down and glance at them, and say something like "Yeah, ok, good luck with that." and continue on your way. If that doesn't work after a couple weeks, just confront the person about it.

In any case, the real important factor is confidence. Nobody can respect a doormat, and people will shit all over you even if they don't have a reason to. People need to have someone at the bottom of the pecking order if they're going to be at the top.

OK I didn't bother reading everyone elses post since its to late and to tired. But dude your school seems to be very fucked up because ive never had that happen or even to other kids really. If you want to get respect start working out now and then once you get a little bigger once some asshole picks on you be a bad ass grab his shirt collar throw him up against a locker punch him a few times and say to stay the fuck away unless he wants to get his ass beat, if you are a bad ass mother fucker and act like your not just freaking out and going crazy on the kid and instead teaching him a lesson you will get respect if they dont respect you they will still be more likly to leave you alone. As for the girls fuck them they seem to much like stuck up bitchs to even be bothered with don't sweat it if you dont get any of them because they sound like horrible people and the best advice is to just ignore them you seem to be a smart and great guy and hey just because your not popular or whatever doesnt mean you wont get a girl eventually. Next time they call you a nerd just tell them to go back to their special ed like a good little fucking retard they have no reason to pick on you they are just jealous. ok thats enough ranting and going on

Back to the concept of working out and being bad ass. Where would be a good website to learn about working out, I honestly have no idea how to go about it. Lift the weight up and down...... thats as much as I know, but I know there is more to it than that.

Also, about being bad ass, I have actually taken various martial arts and have wrestled for 2 years. I have no idea if I'm bad ass or not. I have never been in a physical fight because I have always been able to avoid them. So I might already be bad ass, or I might make a total fool of myself.

Haven't you ever sparred? What type of martial arts have you taken? How long did you study them for?

As for where to get workout tips, I would actually suggest wandering over to Reinvent Yourself. Haven't been there in awhile, but it always used to have a good number of people who could give you an idea of what to do. Your e-mail isn't open for viewing, or else I would send you a copy of the workout I've been doing for the last six months.

I took judo twice a week for about 4 years. From the time I was 6 to 10, so honestly it didn't do as much for me as it would have if I was older at the time. I do however remember most of it. I reached orange belt. (That is 8 ranks up at the place I was going to) The teacher would not teach me the chokes and other dangerous stuff however, because he was worried about me getting hurt.

I also took Kuk Sool Won for 2 months but was forced to stop due to the studio being 30 miles away from my house and me not having enough time to commute back and forth 4 times a week. Kuk Sool Won is a very dangerous "self defense only" course. I like it a lot, but they want me to learn stuff that I consider somewhat pointless, such as learning to count to a hundred in korean, and learning the korean alphabet.

As for the wrestling, I did that for 2 years, but quit because I hated the coach and a few of the assholes on my team. I have been thinking about going back to Kuk Sool Won.

But what I really want is a class that teaches me to defend myself without all the martial arts crap such as learning the korean alphabet.

If you want to take a martial arts class without all the martial arts crap, you're kind of missing the point. That's not to say they're necessarily using the learning of Korean as a tool in your martial arts training; it'd be nice to think so, but not all teachers are like Mr. Miyagi. If you don't like it, find another class. Having a good teacher and a program you enjoy is more important than the art you're learning.

Anyways, back to the point. How to ask a girl out depends on the situation. Just walking up to someone and doing it is hard as hell (or rather, it's easy, but extremely difficult to get a yes). Don't think along those lines. It's a bit of an "advanced move", if you will. Keep it simple. If you're hanging out with people, open your mouth and start talking. Easy, relaxed conversation is the way to go.

You don't have to do it with the intention of asking her out; in fact, it's generally better if you don't, since that puts less pressure on you. You won't click with the majority of girls you come across, probably the vast majority, so don't go in thinking you want a date. Just see where her head is at, and if you two get along, ask her if she wants to do something sometime (the more specific, the better). If she has a boyfriend, oh well; if she simply says no, oh well; if she says yes, great.

In short, the best position to be in is the one where you have nothing to lose. If you go up to a girl all nervous and shaky, or even confidently, ask her out, and get rejected, it's a letdown. You had one purpose in mind, and it didn't work out as you had hoped. A friendly conversation is something positive whether or not she goes out with you, so you either gain less or gain more in that instance.

The only downside is that if you don't get out much, your chances of coming across this situation regularly are slim. But if you don't get out much, then deep down, meeting and getting to know new people isn't that important to you. Sure, it can get lonely; I'll gladly attest to that. But the stress of loneliness is many times less than that of not knowing where you stand with some girl you have the hots for.
