Okay, as whiny as LazyJayne's post was (by the author's own admittance), it made me think... what would *my* ideal someone be like?

Mindset: Very open. Should be interested in the occult. Well versed in Crowley and Casteneda, and maybe some schools of thought/magick I'm not aware of (I love to learn!). Intense but not sulky. Introspective. Not confined by labels.

Physical appearence: I work hard to stay healthy and expect my partner to do the same. My idea of a fun date would be getting up at 5:30 in the morning to go for an hour jog before work, with maybe a quickie in the shower while peaking on the runner's high.

Tall, lanky, swimmer's build. Lots of self-designed, personally significant tattoos. Severe, angular, Eastern European features. Pale with dark/black hair, possibly with dark blue or purple highlights. Favorite color should be black. Shouldn't have any STD's I don't have already.

Pop culture tastes: Most like, or at least tolerate, Films by Lynch and Fellini. Should like, or tolerate, industrial, EBM, noise, old punk, and experimental avant-garde-ish electronica. Liking jazz- and I'm talking uptempo jazz, not that Kenny G crap- is a must. Must have a boiling disgust for dumbed down mainstream entertainment. In others words, a pretentious art fag would be ideal. Should enjoy going out to goth/industrial/fetish clubs occasionally, but mostly for the music and people watching, not to be part of the clusterfuck scenester circle.

Skills: I have a nerd fetish. Proficiency with computers, math, science, or obscure subjects a plus. Must clean up after self, but not mind a little clutter. The ability to enjoy stimulants and serotogenic hallucinogens responsibly and in moderation is a plus. Enthusiasm and involvement towards community service projects like community gardens a huge plus.

Attitude towards relationships: Closed systems tend toward entropy. The relationship should be monogamous, but not the total focus of our attention. Even if we lived together, we should have our own lives and hobbies.

Life goals: Should have/want a job either in the nonprofit or federal sector- nothing corporate (or, if he *must* work in the private sector, be an IT geek). Must want to live in a large city, preferably on the East Coast. Should realize that learning and self-improvement is an ongoing, exciting process that never ends. Should be able to stand on own two feet financially- in that I don't have to pay his rent- but not be materialistic.

General question for the group: When you consider what you want in a boyfriend/girlfriend, for purposes of sharing that information with others, do you define it by what you feel you would prefer, what you know gets your motor running, or both?

The reason I ask is that I know some people (including me in past days) find certain aspects of the opposite sex intriguing or appealing from afar, and will acknowledge those traits as attractive if asked. However, what often happens is that when that person eventually does hook up with someone that fits the bill, so to speak, they find those quirks they found potentially wondrous are, in fact, nothing they care to deal with on a consistent basis.

This generally holds for personality traits, not physical ones. If I think brunettes are hot, I'm going to keep thinking brunettes are hot, even if one or two turn out to be shitheads. But I've seen, for example, a guy think a tough-minded, straightforward girl would be great to have, then buckle when he got together with one and found out she was too much for him to deal with. I'm curious how many people might be leaving themselves open to similar disappointment.

As for me, now.. if I find her attractive and she's cool, that's all I need. Cool is an undefinable concept, so further description would be useless, but most of you should know what I mean.

I can only do this with the thought of the ideal mate as a female; With guys, as long as he tolerates my quirks, enjoys sex and can make me laugh, I'm happy. I don't require intelligence or looks

Now, with a girl:

Natural goth look; Not the flaking white make up and over-done black. Just natural pale skin and dark long eyelashes that look amazing with eyeliner.

Preferably straight or slightly wavy hair; Black or red. Dark red, not ginger.

Green eyes would be the best.

She can dress however she likes, as long as it complements her body. No poser type personalities though.

Sarcasm is a great plus; I hate bubbly hyper people first thing on a Monday morning.

She cannot have no intelligence at all; I mean, if I make a comment on George Orwell, she cannot go "Tee hee, my hair smells sooooo yummy today!". Street smarts or book smarts, a bit of both is best.

Must tolerate my drug usage, but not be more into it than me. Has to accept the fact that I grew up around guys and don't have that feminine huggy obsession type thing that many of them have going on. Personal space? And I don't like clothes shopping. All things she has to accept, as well as my mood swings and quirks, heh.

I'm looking for someone with a balanced sense of humor, to go with his brains, and the ability to make fun of other people sometimes. Tearing apart flimsy arguments when debating with morons is a plus. Manipulating the easily led is also a plus.

An interest in sports, travel, and reading is way up there. Watching, dreaming, participating. Someone to go hiking with would be nice too.

Musically must be willing to put up with my rather, um eclectic tastes. Everything from opera to rap to swing. An anime and old movie watching, long hair liking, gentle guy (This doesn't mean unmanly- violence somewhere else is fine, but a sweet guy... drool) who doesn't get jealous if I hug/ get hugged by most everyone I know.

Also, someone who needs alone time, and won't begrudge me mine, or flip out and think I'm dead if I don't answer the phone for a week, is quietly forgetful, sarcastic, a little cynical, not too religious. A guy who's strong enough to tell me off when I get outrageous, have a solid rousing fight without falling apart, or just sit cuddled and talk. A friend and lover. Yep, time to compomise.

Heh, I agree with what Spiffy said. All you need is someone you find "attractive and cool".

I'd say to even contemplate an "ideal mate" is a good way to set yourself up for constant disappointment. Some of you are so specific, some seem to be describing fictional characters, and some of you have way too many high expectations. Y'alls chances of winning the lottery are much better than finding what you describe.

Of course, I was the same way when I was younger. Hence three failed engagements. Last year I decided I wanted a guy who was smarter than me, had a sense of humor, had goals in life, was someone I was passionate about, and who approved of me and my insanity. A combo of both, actually. What I look for in a mate are the qualities I admire in my closest friends, with the added bonus of mutual attraction.
