Broke up because of mental disorder...
If you guys have read SG recently, I posted a topic about how I was diagnosed with pyroluria; which is basically a seratonin deficiency in my brain. It has caused me to be edgy and sporratically angry/depressed in the past.
Well, no more than ten minutes ago, I told my girlfriend (who I had been having problems with due to this brain crap) why I had been acting the way I was.
The truth is, I went to see a psychiatrist because I wanted to know what was wrong with me and try to fix things. You know, make things good again between her and I. (We've been dating 6 months.)
Well, after I told her, she said "Find someone who can deal with your problem then."
I told her "Fine, if that's the way it is, I don't ever want to be with you. I really didn't think you would say that."
And she, for some reason, got upset.
I think I was in the right... because I don't want to be with someone who can't accept me for who I am, or at least work through things with me.
What do you think?

If she can't accept your problems which are beyond your control, she can eat a fat wad.
Fuck that bitch, you'll find another girl

Re: Broke up because of mental disorder...
It sounds like you were being honest with her. If there's something like a chemical imbalance or whatever, that you're trying to correct, and you aren't important enough to her to stick with... she's fly-by-night and you can do better. Assuming the last six months meant anything, ya know?
I'd recommend getting your head a little straighter and moving on. She sounds like a fair weather friend. Good luck!

Re: Broke up because of mental disorder...
she should have been there to support you.
and it seems like she was fine with you, until you got the label of having the mental disorder.
she seems like an idiot.

Re: Broke up because of mental disorder...
I read it differently, but maybe I'm missing the context. When she said "Find someone who can deal with your problem then" was the "someone" a mental health professional, or a different girlfriend? Just wondering if it was a weird miscommunication that got out of hand.

What the hell does that mean? This is a relationship...you can start and stop them for any reason you want. I don't think you were wrong, but I don't think she was either.

Re: Broke up because of mental disorder...
it seems to me like she was fine with the relationship and working it out until he got the label with the mental disorder. it seems to me like as soon as he got that label she didn't want to have anything to do with him, but before it was okay. and there's really no difference now than before, except now he might really be able to recognize the problem if there is one and begin fixing it.

Re: Broke up because of mental disorder...
Being in a relationship with someone with a mental disorder sucks for you.
Being in a relationship with someone with a mental disorder and not knowing how to deal with it/being indecure/being stupid and apathetic sucks for them.
Being in a relationship with someone with a mental disorder and having a mental disorder yourself it an explosion waiting to happen.
I find that that yin-yang philosophy can be directly applied to relationships. The flexible and inflexible, the stable and unstable. If you're both nutters, you'll be torturing yourselves unless you get on some meds and work on your SELFS. This cannot be done while in a relationship.

Buy a hooker, take her home. Call your ex and tell her to come over because you bought her a present. Leave the door unlocked. When she rings the door bell, start fucking the hooker doggie style and yell for your ex to come in! Laugh really crazy like and tell her you found someone to deal with your problem!

Just because you CAN end a relationship for any reason doesn't mean that it's justified. Only someone who never had a serious relationship would say it's ok to break up with someone for something that would actually be GOOD for their relationship. If she didn't break up with him while he was unsure of what was wrong with him, WHY THE HELL would she break up with him for trying to correct the problem?
Trueborn, I have the same problem as you, and my relationship also suffered when I tried to correct the problem. From my experience, I'd bet that you took alot more shit from her before you started (I'm assuming) taking medication for this, on account of her taking advantage of your emotions. She's obviously selfish, seeing as how she doesn't want you to better yourself, so I'm pretty sure she would have played with your emotions, given the chance.
Try to get medicine for this, if you haven't already. If you have, and it's working, use your regained mental stability to do something useful to take your mind off the fact that anything is wrong with you. Keep trying to fix every problem about yourself, just to make yourself better than you were while you were with her. Not only will this help you find someone else better than her, but it will also piss her off when she realizes what she gave up.

Re: Broke up because of mental disorder...
Aggh..
A relationship where one, if not both of the people have mental illnessess can be really harsh.
Trueborn Vorpal, you did the right thing telling her, and how she reacted was disgracefull.
Would she have been happier if you'd not told her, got the relationship back together again and then told her in six months time? I think not.
She pushed you away because of a Mental Illness.
She pushed you away because she is too stupid, too immature,to deal with it.
She pushed you away because she is ignorant, and has no fucking clue what you're going through.
Well fuck her.
Get over her, and find a new girl, a decent one who will understand and not be such a ridiculous judgemental bitch.

Never came across this expression before, but it sounds like an adequate description.

Re: Broke up because of mental disorder...
Why is everyone acting like she's the big bad wolf? Being involved with someone who has a mental disorder isn't a walk in the park.
Let's say you're dating someone who is edgy and sporadically angry/depressed just because that's the way they are. You'd break you with them if it bothered you. But if it's caused by a disorder suddenly you should be forced to endure a painful difficult relationship just because it's 'out of their hands'? Yeah right.

Re: Broke up because of mental disorder...
I think Johnny_Wild has a good point: it is difficult to date someone with a mental disorder. It's certainly not for everyone. I myself suffer from a mood disorder and it is hard to find friends who will put up with my symptons. Many people find me far too quiet and serious to be around for long, and often I make people very uncomfortable.
However, I also think TV's girl could've handled the news much better than simply saying what she did. She did not even try to continue the relationship, no? She could've at least tried to work with TV through this but she did not, and shame on her for giving up on him so easily. You have my condolescences TV.

A different girlfriend. I was paraphrasing.
I went to the psychiatrist and got a piss test, three freaking times ("just to be sure", Dr. Jenkins said).
And, arg... she could have stayed with me *knowing* I was doing something about it... knowing I was doing it for HER... knowing it could only get better from there... knowing I would eventually be the guy she fell in love with...
