Are looks getting less important?
As more and more 'beautiful' people emerge, are we becoming desensitized to physical appearances? You know, not to the point where they don't matter, but.....do you know what I'm talking about? Any thoughts welcome...

Re: Are looks getting less important?
Though my g/f is stunning and all, I had began to like her alot before seeing good pic of her (We met on the net!) Anyway she was practically tellng me she loved me before seeing a pic of me and then when she did she was even more positive in the compliments but not because of how I look or anything. Anyway the point is I love her and her me not because of looks but because of the person inside!

Re: Are looks getting less important?
Looks didn't matter to me when I was younger, mostly because I had less self-confidence, and I thought I was too ugly to deserve a 'handsome' guy.
Looks still don't really matter to me, but my recent ex... he's so gorgeous. He's the first handsome man I'd ever been with. He has sort of raised the bar on my expectations of physical appearance. He made me see that I have enough to offer a man no matter how attractive they are even though I'm not so good looking myself.
That said, my expectations for intelligence and personality remain the same, and are still of far more importance than looks.

Huh?
I'll completely agree with the desensitization idea, speaking only for myself. I see gorgeous girls all the time, but I just shrug my shoulders. If I imagined nailing all of them, I'd never have another thought running through my head. Hell, I'd have a backlog.
It still matters, but since I find the rarer qualities attractive, an interesting, intelligent girl will catch my attention before some random hottie that I'll never talk to.
I also like girls who answer their e-mail. Assuming they get it, of course.

Re: Are looks getting less important?
I think looks just get less important as you get older. When I was in 8th/9th grade all i wanted to do was go out with "hot chicks".
Its almost 5 years later and Ive learned that unfortunately most "hot chicks" are shallow, dull people. Most NOT ALL. They are difficulty carrying on general conversations let alone actually interesting ones about actual issues.
I was talking to my friends while drinking last friday and we all agreed that the girls we hang out with mostly (the rich, pretty, considered popular girls) are shitty as people and are just a major buzz kill to be around.
Sure everybody wants to be attracted to the person they're with but a girl whose a "5" will seem alot better looking or should i say attractive than a "9" whose a dumbass.
I used to think all that beauty on the inside, don't judge a book by its cover stuff was BS but it holds some weight.
As for are people generally getting better looking and are looks starting to get less important? I doubt it. 25% of people will always be ugly, 25% average, 40% average/slightly above average and 10% extremely hot. I guess we could start a crazy ass eugenics program and weed out ugly people but that sounds a bit Hitlerish to me.

Re: Are looks getting less important?
ive always hated how this debate seems to get defined. there seems to be two schools of thought that have large majorities of one sex in either one. it seems that the female school of thought defines "looks" to mean "omg gorgeous" and thus "looks dont matter" is something they can get out of their mouths with a straight face.
the male school of thought defines "looks" to mean "how a person looks" and thus "looks matter" makes logical sense. by this definition it is accepted that in order to have a sexual/romantic attraction, a person must be sexually attractive physically. it says nothing about whether or not this 'sexually attractive' must mesh with the hollywood or societal norm, but on a personal level.
ive never understood the female school of thought here. why they turn "looks" into an automatic assumption that someone is asking them whether or not they need a supermodel is beyond me. why it is so hard to admit that a person must be sexually/physically attractive to them in order to have a sexual/physical/romantic relationship is also beyond me. maybe they have an inner voice that forces them to put on a front. maybe the idea of appearing shallow is worse than the idea of appearing to be a moron.

Re: Are looks getting less important?
Well, I'm going to tell the truth and admit that I'm completely shallow. I don't understand how you can be physically attracted to someone if you don't think they're good looking. Not possible for me. But then again, almost always I think guys are sexy and everyone else is like "ew, he's so ugly". So it may seem like I'm not being shallow, but I am, I guess I just have weird taste in guys.

Re: Are looks getting less important?
Fuck NO.
It's all about the liposuctioned implanted beautiful people. Just turn on the TV. It makes me want to fucking puke.
That's why all I watch on TV is COPS. It's on all the time, and there's no "beautiful people" involved. Just rednecks and crackheads.

...just being pinned to the ground by male cops...and then handcuffed...again by male cops...?
Looks dont matter. But there needs to be that basis of attraction on each side, or it just doesnt work.

Re: Are looks getting less important?
I think looks are what first get someone attracted to a person... but then it just doesn't matter
It's what sparks the interest but a relationship won't fly if its based solely on looks

Re: Are looks getting less important?
How can you be with someone you're not attracted to?
I mean, what really seperates a relationship from just a friendship? A few romantic gestures? That's bullshit. It's sex. Sex is the only real difference, and sexual attraction, (on a purely biological basis) the desire to mate with this other person, is almost necessary for sex.

I've seen some hot chick cops on COPS. They're VERY few and far between, but sometimes there's a hottie on there.
ESPECIALLY when they do prostitution stings.

Re: Are looks getting less important?
looks are secondary to me, even though I wouldn't go out with a total bag, the most important thing is if shes fne with drug use, and likes the same kind of music that I do.

Re: Are looks getting less important?
I'd say that just about anyone can look pretty good if they try. If someones genes didn't work out just how they wanted, if they keep good hygiene, stay in shape, wear clothes that fit well and look good, and carry themselves with confidence, I don't see why they'd be rejected. And if they were to be, the person rejecting them isn't worth it anyway.
