Default So how do you actually start a conversation with a stranger?

I'm not very good at this really. I can do it when I'm drunk/stoned sometimes but they're normally not very good conversations at all. So, any hints? And please on cheesey-as-hell chat-up lines...

No cheesy line would ever work on a girl, but it might bring a smile and from then on you can work on a conversation. As long as you actually LISTEN to whoever you're talking to, it shouldn't be too bad of a start. Just be interested about her and try to prevent embrassing speechless moments. Also don't be a dick

From my personal experiance cheesy pick-up lines don't seem to work out to well, although this might have something to do with my tendency of making them sound extremely perverted.

Anyways, my advice is if you see a girl/woman in the mall or anywhere just walk up to her and ask her for the time(this is so that it doesn't seem like you've been following her around). Afterwards comment on her looks, and make it sound sincere and not like you're just doing it to get laid(which you probably are). If she takes it the wrong way apoligize and find another target... err umm I mean person. If she doesn't freak out and call the cops and/or her boyfriend on you, then ask her out for some coffee. Here you can get to know some things about her and if all goes well you'll be going on another date sometime soon.

Good Luck

personally, i talk all the time so i just direct whatever im yapping at towards someone else and go from there. that right there is the key though, dont think, just do. does it always work? no. again, as for myself, im not shy and have a deep hatred for shy people. therefore i walk up and say whatever i want to whoever i want. i dont care if its personal, i just treat everyone like ive known them for years. that sort of eliminates the whole "stranger" thing for me.

But I don't talk a hell of a lot. Not because I'm shy, I'm just not the sort of person who talks a lot.

I'm curious to hear more from your actual experiences. I'm not so much shy as just feeling I may be unwelcome to just walk up to someone and start rattling off what? Give me the social setting and I do just fine.. put me in a chance-meeting environment and I'm lost... enlighten us if you'd be so kind...

Id just be really funny. Say something very corny but in a funny way.

EXAMPLE

"So, nice weather we are having."

Non-corny situational things work. The kind that'll show your interest with the person you're talking to. Like asking a girl at a video store how long she's been working there or a girl on the beach if she's into surfing (if there's a surfboard next to her). People love to have questions asked about themselves, so work with that and observe the environment before you pop out a corny line.

Say something truthful. Like this.

You: Hey! Wanna see the biggest in the world?

Girl: Nope.

You: Good! Because I'm a two-incher! Wanna shag?

Whatever sort of opening you use, make sure it's original and unique to that individual. If it's something that applies to that person specifically, it'll work that much better.

Remember, as long as the girl remembers you it was a success.

I like to leave a good last impression. Say something that so that she'll think about it even when she's not seeing you. Don't be afraid to go up and talk to people. They are nicer than you think!
